Was The War With Mexico Unjustifiable?
The American and Mexico war had an effect on many people all around the world. Many people also stole things and killed each other just so they can live and be free. The war between America and Mexico had many conflict between each other. Many amount of lives was lost, and half of Mexico’s territory was lost. Not so many good things happened, like many tensions had emerged between Mexico and America. The U.S was more unjustified than justified for many different reasons. Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself was unjust because they wanted to protect the citizens, U.S wanted to expand slavery, and sent soldiers to their land which they thought was going to be a good idea. Most importantly, Texas disobeyed Mexico for many reasons, like their greedy actions. The U.S wanted to expand slavery in Mexico for a main purpose.

They wanted to get the Mexicans back for what they did to them, so they traveled to Mexico and fought for their rights and to not be invaded again. The soldiers killed many Mexicans for payback and took many of their things from them. They wanted to keep the people happy and not scared because of Mexico’s actions that they did so they thought it was not right to scare all the people of America. They wanted to cause what they thought was right for the citizens, so they helped to keep them safe and not endangered by the Mexicans.
Those that see the war as justified, will argue that the U.S and Mexico war was justified. However, it was unjustifiable because of all the actions Mexico pulled like, coming to their land, shedding the blood of the Americans on to their soil, etc. Also, they discouraged many people because with how they treated the U.S, which was something they did not
My first reason of why they did not have proper reasoning into going to war with Mexico is that they stole land from them. John L. O`Sullivan quotes, “California, will, probably, next, fall away from Mexico.”(Doc.A) Charlie Summer, Massachusetts state legislature, also quotes,”At this period, citizens of the U.S. had already begun to[move] into Texas. The idea was, that this extensive province ought to become a part of the United States.”(Doc.D). The evidence that I have found for this argument shows the
America was so obsessed with manifest destiny, expanding the United States, they forgot that they were not supposed to take their slaves into Mexico, because the Mexicans did not want the slaves in their land. The Americans were unjustified in their decision for going to war with Mexico because they had taken their land and settled in it with their permission but broke the Mexican enforced laws. Mexicans wanted to keep the Texans under control. The invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined to annex herself to our union.
One reason that the Mexican-American war was not justified is that the Americans took land from Mexico. The annexation of Texas is an example of America taking land, stated in Document C. That was very wrong of the U.S to do at the time due to security and legal reasons for Mexico. Then Americans tried to take more land from Mexico by sending troops to near the Rio Grande River. As a security measure, the Mexicans decided to attack the American soldiers, killing 16 of the Americans. This shows that Americans were not justified for going to war with Mexico because Americans decided to send soldiers to invade the undisputed part of land between Texas and Mexico.
Overall, the United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because they believed in and used slavery while it was against Mexico’s authority. America was extremely rude toward Mexico even though America started it. “Imbecile and distracted, Mexico never can exert any real government authority over such a country” (Document A).This quote shows how great America’s rudeness toward Mexico was. America was not only rude but also not sensible for saying that about Mexico. “The Anglo-Saxon foot is already on [California’s] borders.
The U.S war with Mexico was justifiable for many reasons. The war all began with the United States annexing Texas, causing problems with Mexico. Then ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Although the United States war against Mexico may be viewed as controversial, the war was just due to: Mexico not communicating, Mexico harming Americans, and unfair laws towards Americans. First of all, the war was certainly honorable, after Mexico refused to communicate with the United States causing more problems.
The Mexican-American War Was America justified to stage a war against Mexico? Many historians have debated whether or not America was justified to start the war with Mexico. Many American historians refer to it as the Mexican-American War while many Mexicans refer to it as The U.S Invasion. The Americans were justified to stage a war against Mexico for these reasons.
The Mexican-American War was incorrectly named; it was not simply Americans vs Mexicans, but a war between opinions. America’s war with Mexico: a war for land, for the sake of Manifest Destiny, or perhaps, a war to be started and ended in victory by… a thief. This war was supported and criticized by Americans and Mexicans alike. Manifest Destiny was a belief that it was God’s Plan to for America to expand to the Pacific Ocean, and a very controversial belief, at that. Before this war of opinions, the US already created a tense relationship with its neighbor by providing aid to the Texas Rebellion, and later annexing Texas. The United States was not Justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was signed over, with no extra land, America was obviously itching to go to war, and settlers agreed to become Mexican citizens in the first place
“Restless spirits, discontented at home… joined them… the work of rebellion sped.” (Sumner 329) It shows they rebelled. “But now,... Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” (Polk 325) The Americans made claims that were false. The land between the Rio Del Norte is the American border. (Polk 325) Not their official land. Mexicans passed the border. (Pole 325) Mexico did nothing wrong. The Americans were not justified because they broke Mexico’s rules. They broke too many rules to be justified in a war that could have been easily
The United States War with Mexico is still a divisive topic, but should be considered as unjust from how many Texans moved into Mexico and agreed to obey the laws, but the simple could not do that to a certain point to which Mexico enforced there rules. Because of this they revolted to “unfair” laws. Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself was unjust because Texas initially started the war, President Polk creates more conflict, and the Americans get greed for slavery.
Texas and the United States believed that the proper borderline between Texas and Mexico was the Rio Grande, but for Mexico it believed that the border between them and Texas is the Nueces River.”(Hook) As you can see the United States and Mexico had different beliefs. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because the US believed that Mexico had a smaller amount of land they what they think they have. But Mexico believes that it has more land. Mexico and the United States were fighting over the disputed territory which was between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande, which made the tension between Mexico and the US more negative. “ on April 24th of April a party…..of sixty three men and officers, were… dispatched from the American camp up the Rio del Norte.(Doc B)” This evidence shows that Mexico had went against its boundary and fought with American men in the striped area where Mexico and the United states were already fighting for. This Made thing more difficult to handle because the Us and Mexico were already fighting for land and the probably made things worse between the two
The factors that started the Mexican War lay heavily on American shoulders. Whether if the factors were created by social, political or economical needs, they have all become the center of attention for the question of being a national interest or disgrace. However, the Americans felt that they existed for “…spreading the blessings of peace.” according to Andrew Jackson. There will always be controversy between the two sides of this matter, the Americans who feel that it had to be done, to the Mexicans who felt that it was an injustice done to their nation.
The Mexican War of 1846 was not a justifiable war based on the Just War Theory of jus ad bellum principles. The Just War Theory addresses the political leaders that are in charge of initiating war with another entity. The rules of applying the jus ad bellum to a war are based on six areas that address whether a war can be considered a just or unjust war. The most important rule is examining Just Cause as it sets the way for the rules that follow. Right Intention to go to war based on their Just Cause, Proper Authority and Public Declaration to determine if they could declare war and Last Resort being the final decision made if all other outlets were exhausted. As well as determining the Probability of Success in the
The Mexican War was big war about territory and could've been avoided, but instead the U.S. and Mexico fought in the war. The Mexican War was started by Mexico. They started it because they would not negotiate with the U.S. about the territory of Texas. Mexico wouldn’t talk with the U.S. because they thought that Texas belonged to them instead the U.S. America disagreed with that because the president named Santa Anna signed a treaty saying that Texas belonged to the U.S. Another reason why Mexico started the war is because they entered territory and killed Americans on American soil. American troops went to the Rio Grande to defend Texas and was ambushed by Mexico. On the Mexican’s point of view, they thought that the troops entered Mexican
The Mexican War was viewed as one of the most controversial wars in United States history. Originating from the annexation of Texas, or the lack thereof in Mexico’s eyes, the final spark to cause the war was an incident between soldiers of both countries in disputed land. Both Mexico and the US claimed to have been provoked by the other, and that they were only protecting their country. Many US citizens argued the war, as it appeared President Polk was using it for reasons other than self defense. By going to war with Mexico, the US faced the possibility of gaining much more of Mexico’s land and extending slavery in the country. The United States' decision to go to war with Mexico was based on a desire to extend slavery, to gain land they had
The United States of America has been through many wars, wars concerning many things such as land oil, pride and respect. However, when the United States went to war with Mexico, it was planned over greed. The Mexican- American war was a war provoked by the United States, in efforts to expand the coasts of the country. Mexico was a small under privileged country who had previously to the war had already lost part of their country (Texas). Needless to say this war was cut throat and violent, it was however one of the smartest business decisions America has ever made.
