The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner, is an action packed novel about a group of boys who are test subjects trying to get of a maze like lab rats. The story starts when the main character, Thomas, is sent up an elevator to his new home called the Glade. The Glade is filled with only these 30 or so boys ranging from 12 to 17 years old. There is also a huge maze that the glazers are intensely trying to escape. The maze is there only way out of the glade that they have been working on for 3 years. Everything is normal until a girl comes up the elevator for the first time. Disasters start happening all over the glade and almost everything is ruined. “It looked like something from an experiment gone terribly gone wrong - something from a nightmare. Part animal, part machine , the Griever rolled and clicked along the stone pathway. Its body resembled a gigantic slug, sparsely covered in hair and glistening with slime, grotesquely pulsating in and out as it breathed. It had no distinguishable head or tail, but front to end it was at least six feet long, four feet thick.” (126) As you can see the author explained events in great detail which was very helpful for trying to depict what was happening in the book. One thing I didn't like was how the protagonists of the the book, the creators, were not given enough gravitas. Thomas is very curious on why the rest of the gladers seem to not care about them being controlled like animals. “Think about it. Our memories are wiped inside a place that seems to have no way out, surrounded by bloodthirsty monster guards. Doesn't that sound like prison to you?” (64) If I were put in a situation like this where I was held captive like that I would be asking a lot of questions
