The End of Dieting by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. was my choice of reading selected out of the three assigned options simply by judging the book by its cover and title. My motivation behind this selection was my high suspicions of a reading that illustrates and guides readers on how to live a healthy lifestyle without constantly dieting and meal prepping. I had the impression that because the author happens to be a doctor, there would be excellent medical advice and rationale behind the tips and tricks given in staying healthy without constantly counting calories, also with my medical background as a nurse I felt I would be able to relate and understand the information presented. I have personally battled a lifestyle of jumping from eating healthy for …show more content…
Understanding the science behind digestion and the foods we eat changes ones perspective on living a healthy life. Major emphases was put on the power of the mind and its key role in staying healthy; explaining how the mind is a powerful force that must be grasped and controlled in order to refrain from the constant mindset of dieting and how to “beat the brain at its own game” (Fuhrman, 2014).
Promoting health and refraining from disease was probably the root topic of this book and the main take-away. Common dieting tips that are constantly promoted by dieticians and doctors were similar to that of what the author illustrate, but with more detailed break-down and eloquence provided by Dr. Fuhrman. He explains the myths behind dieting and dieting programs

Based on a 24 Hour Recall of my diet, results using NutriCalc Plus report that my food intake lacked a healthy balance of all food groups. My Grain intake reached only 60% of the My Plate daily recommendations. My Vegetable intake was a mere 50% of the recommended servings. Additionally, I consumed 84% of the daily recommendations for the Dairy Group. Nonetheless, I did exceed the recommendations for the Fruit Group and Protein Group with intakes of 155% and 107%, respectively.

The book that I had chosen to read was Buried Onions by Gary Soto. I found the book by looking at the reading list and after reading the description decided that it seemed the most interesting as I enjoy reading about social issues that some people have to live with.
I had chosen the book Eating Mindfully (Second Edition), by Susan Albers. Albers is a US-based psychologist who not only specializes in mindful eating, but also, eating issues, weight loss, and body image concerns. On top of creating these books Albers organizes mindful eating workshops across the country and internationally to assist people from all over the world.
In life, many people participate in various daily events and activities that help them enjoy being who they are. People may enjoy getting together with friends, going to the mall, going to an amusement park or simply finding relaxation in nature. However, a big part of everyone’s life is of course eating and many people find pleasure in doing so. Eating is a very enjoyable and delectable must for everyone but should be done so, like everything in life, in a smart and intelligent way. Being smart and perceptive when eating is a large part of nutrition.
Chapter one starts by telling the reader all the different kinds of health that we as humans experience. Ranging from physical health talking about the shape and size of the body to environmental health talking about the positive and negative impacts of where one might live. The chapter also expresses how if one chooses to start caring about their health it can lead to a longer, happier life. The choices people make when they are younger greatly impact their health later on in life.

Analysis on “How to Mark a Book” Mortimer Jerome Adler, a New Yorker by birth, Ph.D. graduate from Columbia University in the batch of 1928, was born in the year 1902. He was a real visionary who wanted to teach an ordinary person how to read a book with ease and proper etiquette. He successfully wrote “How to Mark a Book,” an article which tells the readers how to read a book while enjoying it and absorbing like a sponge every word of wisdom from it with marking it through using logos, ethos, and pathos. Appealing to the reader’s reason Adler explains that book lovers aren’t likely to get the maximum out of their books unless they mark them up.

To do this, I recommend that Gladys focus on consuming a variety of nutrient-rich foods while limiting saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt, and alcohol; balance energy intake and expenditure, refer to the USDA Food Guide known as MyPyramid for guidance, and possibly make small decreases over time in calorie intake and small increases over time in physical activity. These recommendations been proven to be effective at lowering body weight and blood pressure (Schlenker & Roth, 2011). To facilitate these health behavior changes, we should refer to a few different health behavior theories.
This subject interests me because throughout my time in school I was always interested in the science (health side) to things so I would always research different areas, print bits out and put them all in a file. Still, to this day I continue to research different illnesses, medications, and treatments and put them all into the same file. I am suitable for this course because I am very determined, well driven, committed to learning new things and willing to try anything if it means getting closer to my goal of becoming a nurse.
This means changing the way you eat, exercise, and the way that you do everyday activities.
