How To Read A Book, By Mortimer Adler

Based on the course material, many attributes make up a good reader. Not only should good readers avoid numerous distractions, like technology, but they should also be active readers. In a book entitled, How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler lists many characteristics of good readers. On active reading, Adler claims that “since any sort of reading is an activity, all reading to some degree must be active. Completely passive reading is impossible; we cannot read with our eyes immobilized and our minds asleep…the more active the reading the better” (5). Adler also uses the analogy of a baseball to further illustrate his point. In a book entitled, Deep Work, author Cal Newport explores the idea of deep work versus shallow work. He defines deep work as “professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limits” (Newport 3). On the other hand, shallow work is “non-cognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted” (Newport 6). In response to Adler’s teachings, good readers should read “deeply” with maximum effort and minimal distractions. However, in a later section of his book, Newport explains that deep work is not something that comes easily. He explains that willpower and unbroken concentration is not easily achieved or maintained: “Your will, in other words, is not a manifestation of your character that you can deploy without limit; it’s instead like a muscle that tires” (Newport 116). Like with any other muscle in the body, a person’s ability to concentrate must be worked on and strengthened.
