Leon Zhu Professor Harwood English 1101 8 December 2014 Research Paper One item that has flourished through the decades, and has come to substantially impact our lives is the phone. The first telephone was created in 1876, and as decades passed by, it was replaced by the cellphone, which incorporated the addition of many useful new features. Additional features such as text messaging, a built-in camera, and internet access transformed the people’s perceptions because the add-ons presented more purpose to the cellphone. With the implementation of these advancements, the cellphone proved to be a reliable tool and distracting burden in daily life; while it reduced once painfully tedious tasks to a single touch and earned much positive feedback, users had become so dependent on it that people also started to grow concerned about the cellphone and its potential impact on future generations of cellphone users. Before the telephone was invented, communication was held in ways such as sending letters, using pigeons to carry messages in little containers, and traveling to speak to one another. Humphrey also states that, “People would write messages with quill pens and send them by a postal system. Some went by stagecoach. Pony Express riders galloped thousands of miles from one side of the United States to the other (to deliver mail)” (Humphrey 32). It would take a long time to even get one message through to the other party, but with the telephone, things changed. When the
Technology has affected our lives for the worst. It has created a multitude of problems that have yet to be resolved. These problems include a loss of identity, antisocial behavior, and a misrepresentation of experiencing life. Technology takes us away from being active participants in our individual lives and places us in a virtual and unrealistic world. Those in contact with technology, which is essentially everyone, are unaware of the deeper influence that technology has upon them. Individuals should be aware of the fact that technology has a significant impact on their lives. We have become desensitized by technology to the point that we do not see that it has affected our lives in such a negative way. Technology brings more problems than
Technology is defined as machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge. Its original use was meant solely for the service of humans, however overtime it has evolved into something much different. What was originally meant to be an assisting piece of machinery has changed almost every aspect of our culture. The way we think, communicate, lie, and even love has been impacted by the use of technology, and all of this is has made for interesting pieces of literature. In pieces such as Her and I, Robot, we see the evolution of robots and artificial intelligence into a more empathetic and humanlike creatures. This gradual change in our views of robots overtime speaks volumes to the evolution of technology. Technology in literature has become a reflection of human beings themselves, mirroring the very qualities of ourselves that make us human. By looking at the personality that technology takes on in literature, we can greater understand the aspects of ourselves that truly make us human.
In our ever-evolving world, we have seen the emergence of technology in all aspects of our lives. People use technology as a form of entertainment, as a tool to help them communicate with other people, to help them monitor their health and as a tool to help them enhance their work. When out in public, it is common to see numerous people using some form of technologic device. While at the mall, it is common to see people talking on their phones, texting people or posting on their social network sites. At a doctor’s offices you will likely see people playing on their tablets or using their cell phones, and it is even common practice to see these devices being used by people who are working out at the gym. Although technology has
In the mid-nineties, before calling your friend to see if they would like to hang out, or texting your mom to let her know where you are, people communicated through sending letters in the mail. The 1980s had to have been the best decade for technology. As listed on the website “How Stuff Works” a page written by Marshall Brain, in the 1980s, camcorders were introduced, as well as fax machines, CD players, cell phones, portable phones, VCRs, video game consoles, cable television, and even answering machines. For example, if you were
Technology has evolved rapidly in previous years, making the completion of task more convenient. In order to effectively highlight convenience to consumers, data security must come into consideration. The transition from swipe/PIN cards to contactless has introduced yet also removed security issues.
In this digital age, nearly all human beings have some form of attachment to their cell phone. At a touch of a button, the smart phone users have access to the latest breaking news, social network, the weather forecast, and games. Surprisingly, many people did not know that the telephone has been around for more than one hundred years. Telephone is one of the few inventions that change the course of history. This is the ever evolving technology enables humans to connect with someone thousands of miles away. More importantly, the telephone has changed how humans interact and also creates a global obsession.
When a college student was asked if they knew what an overhead was, the response had been, “Yes of course! It’s a projector like box with a light and mirror, which sits in the front of the classroom. It displays pictures from slides, and the teacher has clear sheets that we can write on using vis-a-vis marker.” Then when a student in elementary school was asked if they knew what an overhead was, their response were entirely different. None of them knew what it was, as their responses had been, “A coloring table”, “When you wear a mask”, and “A wood that covers things.” As one can see, the newer generations didn 't have the slightest idea of what an overhead is, while older students have grown up with the use of one. This is due to how technology has been advancing throughout the years and it will continue to change as time goes on.
Technology seems to be a topic with a lot of baggage attached to it. Since the evolution of technology a vast amount of social interaction has been diminished. Personal time with others has been cut down significantly as the new modern technology is now available for nearly anyone. Constantly being attached to a cell phone or computer screen is prohibiting social interaction between all kinds of relationships. Many say it is the fault of the individual to let the technology usage go as far as ruining communications that were once frequent among a kinship. Catching up on the latest celebrity gossip has become more important than talking to a spouse about their work day. Social media or online work can feel like an addiction to those who regularly use it. Now that the internet is accessible almost anywhere at anytime, the desire to be on board with the latest social media attraction has become nearly impossible to avoid. Being an avid technology user can put people at risk of becoming socially deprived of face-to-face communication since the user may prefer telecommunications rather than an in-person conversation. Due to a depletion of direct facial communication many believe that the use of technology is at fault; however these allegations are being fought against as others see technology as an advancement in communication.
Growing up in a low income family was miserable. The small two story six-hundred square foot house was home to four families which consisted of father, mother, son or daughter. There were no English speakers in the house except for my sister and I. Cartoon Network was the most popular network and I was finally able to watch it for the first time. Some words were still not being processed in my brain but I started understanding how they were used. When I was able to use a computer it was like opening my mind to how modern technology impacts our lives. That’s when my fascination for technology grew. I wanted to believed there was more that we could do with technology. Zoids, Gundam, and Pacific Rim showed me how much dedication people put into these great creations and I believed in myself to hopefully one day make these creations from dream to reality. I watched how these robots helped people they were seen as modern marvels and the pilots of these suits are seen as heroes.
At this day in time, everyone has some form of technology, even children. This technology can range from a cell phone to an iPad to an old-fashioned Desktop computer. Along with these devices comes some form of internet or way to reach the outer world. The common denominator between these all is communication. Communication can be as broad as an exchange of information between people. To others, communication is meant to be more interpersonal than that. Now, people have the luxury or texts, emails, phone calls, video calls, and social media. This tends to break that interpersonal communication between people. Technology has led to a decline in communication by making
Ever wonder if you should unplug more often from your electronic devices? People hear the words “unplug” and “technology” in the same sentence, instantly it causes them to be startled or uneasy by just the simple thought of staying away from technology, but we can actually gain a lot from this. Sure, it has improved our life, but there are always two sides of the story. Personally, I waste rather than save time whenever i 'm on the Web because time seems to go so fast and one does not even realize it. Is it possible that technology has become such a common part of our life that it’s seen as a very difficult tasks for us to not use it, no wonder our parents take our electronic away when we’re grounded. Sadly, it’s true, society as a whole seems to feel anxious when they can’t be checking their social media. For the most part, as soon as anyone hears the “ding” they turn their heads towards their cell phone to instantly reply, but would it be a good idea if we took a break? Although, it has some downfalls, the internet allows us to perform many tasks for example, writing a research report or listen to the latest justin bieber song. So are we taking the internet for granted and not acknowledging everything it does for us, or are we taking advantage of it by overusing it?
Have you ever used technology – surfing the internet, playing a videogame, or scrolling through social media – as a way to escape reality for a little bit? Have you been guilty of ‘binge watching” a Netflix series, or two...or three in one weekend because you did not want to deal with your parents, family or friends for a while? At what point does technology become an addiction, especially for teenagers of today who will be the first generation who knows nothing different than life with technology? Being seventeen, I am apart of the generation labeled as “digital natives,” this means me and many other teens have been born into the technological world, and do not know a world without technology. We are allowing this technological world to consume who we are and what we do with our lives. Especially for the generation of teens today, technology will continue to be difficult to live without; but it also will become something very difficult to live with if we rely on it too much or feel like we can not live without it.
In a generation that’s technology savvy people are always on their phone at any given time of the day. Think about it for a second, the first thing a person does in today’s world, even before they have to use the rest room is to check their phone. Yes, you heard right, check their phone. It’s become such a natural habit that its naturally stored in our daily routine. Everything is at the palm of our hands to finding something to eat, checking/responding to emails, weather alerts, and amber alerts. The lists of things we can do on our phone just continues to grow rapidly. Do we ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe we are on our phones too much? Studies show that the average American spends 4.7 hours on his or her phone, and will check social media a staggering 17 times a day according to Digital Trends. In more serious cases some have lost their lives making posts to via social media moments leading up to their deaths. The app I’d like to propose a problem and solution to is Facebook.
Throughout the existence of humanity, technology has evolved with us. Introducing itself primitively with rocks and sticks to compensate for what our hands were not able to do, and ultimately progressing into computers and smartphones to accomplish much more intricate tasks. These devices are now at our disposal, being seen in almost every household and every pocket in the world, but how much does technology actually affect us in our everyday lives? It could be more poignant than most may think. A theory is being considered that technology could be characterized as part of the human genome. If this theory holds true, then it could be understood that technology will continue to evolve with us and benefit us as it has. A way to envision this is to consider what a spider’s web is to a spider; it is constructed and appropriated by the spider for it to survive their ecosystem. Technology functions in almost the same way for human beings; not just for them endure the elements, but to thrive and prosper as the dominant species of our planet. Communication has always been at the core of our advancement because of our ability to share ideas and bolster others past work. According to humanity’s past generations, the recent progression of the technology of communication has generated a problem for the way in which human beings are accustomed to interacting, and the human race will need to prepare to conform once again. The simplistic process of human interaction is slowly being
Technology affects our lives in a major way. It is hard to go anywhere and not see the changes technology has bought to people now in year 2015. It is hard to even imagine life without technology. It is hard to imagine life without technology because whether it has been in its simplest form technological advances have been being introduced to humanity since the invention of the wheel. Today technology has helped us save time and helps those who use it to complete tasks easier and more efficiently. And saving time and being able to complete task more efficiently is paramount in today’s society where being able to operate as lean as possible is a major priority, if not the top priority. Technology is one of the major reasons businesses, both small and large, can function as well as they do in a rapid and agile manner. Just think about how technology affects many jobs today compared to one-hundred years ago, and not even that long ago, maybe even thirty years ago. Technology itself makes life easier, and makes task that used to be stringent and
