The Effects of Meditation
Blythe Houchen Stress is common among many Americans; however, stress among college students is reported to be much higher. Many college students may not practice healthy habits to lower their stress levels. A known method to lower stress is meditation. Meditation is not a common g practice among college students. If college students began to practice meditation then their stress levels would likely lower. This experiment is to test if their are positive effects to those who practice meditation. These students will be from ages eighteen to twenty seven. The students have signed up to take part of the experiment through the Psychology department. The students all be majoring some form of science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Biochemistry) and are all taking the same number of hours this semester. Twenty five students while be female, while the other twenty five students will be male. Nineteen of the twenty five female students have jobs while seventeen of the twenty five male students have a job. Thirteen of the twenty five female students have practiced meditation at one point. Six of the twenty five male students have practiced meditation at one point. None of the fifty students have practiced meditation in the past six months. None of the students have children. All fifty students have been informed about the experiment and all agree to participate. All fifty students complete a questionnaire about their stress and anxiety when it comes to school. A racially segregated Chicago had experienced few race riots prior to 1919. However, between April 1919 and October 1919, race riots spanned the nation; this became known as the Red Summer. On July 27, 1919, Chicagoans started to express their emotions on racial issues, which turned into violence, lasting several days and resulting in the deaths, injuries, and displacement of hundreds of people. During this time, Chicagoans opinions regarding racism led to extreme chaos, leaving African Americans and whites fighting with each other for wealth and opportunities. The relatively-invisible line between blacks and whites in Chicago became bolder, deepening the rift between the races. As a result of the gruesome events that occurred in the summer of 1919, segregation in Chicago deepened. Chicago city officials created the Chicago Commission of Race Relations, comprised of six whites and six blacks, with the goal of solving large racial issues in Chicago, such as housing for blacks and job competition. Today, Chicago is more desegregated, but it was an arduous journey and is still a work in progress. It is still a predominant issue, and there are many recurring examples of racial violence in Chicago currently. This makes racial inequality an even more important issue in Chicago communities, and the legacy of this racial violence continues to haunt this persistently segregated city.
As we know, there more and more college students have stressed issue nowadays. However, most of them just want to find some way to release the stress, but they forget the reason why make them feel stress. The author used the evidence “Anxiety-ridden students list schoolwork as their chief stressor. U.C.F.’s center and after-hours hotline are busiest when midterm and final exams loom. The media does portray Latinos and other underrepresented groups in ways that lead to stereotypes. These stereotypes are portrayed in the news, films, and multiple television shows. These stereotypes are often damaging to the underrepresented group because of literal meaning people will take the stereotype. The implications of meditation have long been controversial and abundant research studies have been done in support of meditations potential to change the brain and body. The results within this research paper center on main changes in the brain such as reducing depression, effecting levels of cognitive flexibility, and creativity due to meditation. The research also focuses on variations within the body as well as changes that may be included in both topics of brain and body relating to stress regulation, heart rate variability, and emotional responses. This research paper examines these articles and their studies in order to support the argument that meditation encourages positive changes
Mindfulness meditation consists of skills and methods to unplug from the busy world around you and from the busy 'monkey brain ' so often experienced in today 's life and particularly in ADHD, anxiety and depression. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness meditation trains and reinforces the ability to pay attention to the present moment, on purpose which helps to increase concentration, decrease anxiety, improve sleep, improve mood, decrease the stress response, and improve physical and emotional health. The studies are compelling about the health benefits of mindfulness meditation. In fact, studies show that mindfulness meditation actually changes the brain in positive ways. The cortex of the brain is thicker in certain areas of the brain in those who practice mindfulness meditation. And brainwave patterns are changed in healthy ways as well.
College represents a form of higher learning. For many, it is also a time for personal growth as we transition into adulthood. This in itself is a stressful situation as one must make drastic adjustments to a new role, environment, and demands. Almost everyone is preoccupied with happiness but yet the population seems to be increasingly unhappy. As society and human experience changes we can’t help but ask ourselves how can we fix an increasingly unhappy and dissatisfied society? Mindfulness meditation is a progressively popular solution to this issue. Mindfulness meditation stems from Buddhist tradition and is a practice that includes focusing one’s attention. Does mindfulness meditation have real psychological effects? And if so can they help improve quality of life? I have chosen to side with Benjamin Powell who concludes that sweatshops in third world countries are acceptable due to the fact that they offer more benefits to sweatshop workers than they would if they were eradicated. If we were to eliminate sweatshop labor we would be eliminating the opportunity for people in the third world countries to have some type of income. I understand that there are health risks to working in the sweatshop environment but there are also risks that come with not having an income at all. Many of these workers, if laid off due to the destruction of sweatshops, may resort to finding an income elsewhere in ways such as prostitution. College students have expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill and satisfy the needs of both their parents and society.
