Poems create Thoughts and Thoughts create Poems
When we think of poems we often think of a rhythm, rhymes, or of short reads that come together almost in a lyrical and musical type of way. Today’s modern poems are much different because they incorporate different types of techniques and literary ways of making a piece of writing into a poem. Through poetry many poets tend to have a deeper connection with themselves and their readers because they express their thoughts, feelings and memories through their close selection of words. Many people believe a poem should be composed of a specific and limiting number of lines and techniques. These poems in particular may seem to many like they limits themselves in terms of length because they are written as a poem instead of a prose but behind every word and line in the poems there is so much meaning hidden behind it. While reading these poems the reader may find themselves analyzing and looking closer to what they are reading. In “The Homecoming” by Dana Gioia there is symbolism incorporated by using lines such as “Sensing the power melting from my arms, I realized the energy I felt was just adrenaline” by choosing to use metaphors and similes the author reveals a few aspects of the poem but leaves the rest for the readers to interpret (Dana Gioia, “The Homecoming”). By choosing to write their stories as poems instead of in prose the authors are reaching out to a specific yet sparse and limited audience of readers that can still analyze and interpret their poems.
Another reason the authors of the poems “The Homecoming,” ”The Feud,” and “The Pact” chose to write their stories as poems instead of prose is to emphasize the emotion behind their words. As stated in the article “Poems are a form of writing that 's often rich with emotion, and they 're meant to provoke an emotional response from the reader” and this further reinforces why all three authors chose poetry because it emphasizes and correctly portray the extremity of their poems content (“National Writing Project”).
