Now, people in general have become more open minded and analytical with what they read. For instance, the story depicts that the reason why Adam and Eve were punished because they ate the fruit that gave them knowledge of right and wrong. However, Adam and Eve did not know the difference between right and wrong before eating the fruit. For example, after eating the fruit, Adam and Eve knew it was wrong for them to be naked and tried to cover themselves. So was it right for God to punish Adam and Eve when they did not know that it was right or wrong to disobey Him? Is it moral to punish those who do not understand what is right and wrong, much less differentiate the two? In Genesis, God interacts with Adam by speaking to him face to face. Whether God was giving out instructions or punishment to Adam and Eve, he was always doing it on a personal level. The usual portrayal of God as an omniscient being is instead replaced as mentor to Adam and Eve who is trying to help them understand their existence. This close relationship is shown even when man does something wrong. The only rule that God gives to Adam is that he must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve go on to break the singular rule and be punished; but not to the extent most would think. Before partaking of the fruit God says that, "the day that you eat of it you shall die"(Genesis). Instead of dying, Adam and Eve are removed from the garden and go begin their lives. God punishes them for their actions, but also gives clothes and allows them to take the knowledge they have gained from the tree. Even after breaking the one rule that he has set for them, God allowed them to keep the knowledge they gained to begin mankind. This grace towards humanity is shown once again with Adam and Eve's children, Cain and Abel. Cain kills Abel after God accepts Abel's offering and not his own. Even with Cain having killed his own brother, God still does not punish Cain severally; "you will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth"(Genesis). This punishment is especially seen as inadequate as Cain goes on to settle in Nod and have his own family. This mercy by God shows that he was unable to punish humanity even for the most serious of offenses. To understand how moral beliefs as well as actions formulate and operate within individuals and societies, it is imperative that a general definition of morality is laid out. Morality, then, can be defined as ones principles regarding what is right and wrong, good or bad. Although an individual may hold moral beliefs, it is not always the case that moral actions follow. Therefore, in this essay I aim to provide an explanation that clarifies the two and in doing so I also hope to further the notion that one’s moral framework is a product of all three factors; nature, nurture, and free will. The first part of this essay will flush out what exactly morality it and how it manifests similarly across individuals and differently across individuals. Contrariwise, I will then explain how morality manifests similarly across societies and differently across societies. An essential starting point for interpreting the Bible is the understanding that misinterpretations are bound to happen. The difference in time and context alone is causation, let alone the factors of translation and transcription. Susan T. Foh and Carol Meyers, both graduates of Wellesley College, have very differing strategies regarding how to interpret divine texts. Meyers, a professor at Duke, directed attention towards the context in which the text was written. Since our societies are constantly in flux, the context from when the text was written is often different from the context in which predominant and accepted interpretations were fabricated. Foh’s strategy of interpreting and understanding the text is to utilize latter parts of the text, which were written with more recent contexts, in order to understand the text. It is difficult for one to argue that objective ethical and moral principles exist, even though some will attempt to do this, but it is a debated topic when the origins of these principles, if they even truly exist, come into question. Simply put, most people argue that the origins of moral systems stem from God, that these things are based in human evolution and constructs, or that they are born from something separate of them both.
The very first value presented with the story of Adam and Eve and the tree of knowledge is that of obedience to a higher power, in this case God. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were punished by banishment from the Garden of Eden, as well as a formidable curse "To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply the pain of your childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." And to Adam he said, "...cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life...(p.3 ch.3-16)" In punishing Adam the severity of the transgression of disobedience to God is shown, and thus it is implied that obedience to a higher power is a quality favorable to an ideal society. Similarly, in the story of Cain and Abel, Cain is cursed and exiled for the murder of his brother (p.4 ch.4-8). Thus, the act of murder is condemned in an ideal society. In this manner, the stories within The Bible serve as a manner in which the qualities of an ideal society are presented.

Ten million years ago, the first single cell organism was formed and millions of years later it evolved into a complex, multi-cellular organism. Evolution is one of Man’s greatest assets; it has enabled us to survive the harshest environments and provided us with the abilities to beat the odds. Mankind evolves in various ways, psychologically, physically and technologically. But very few are aware of the evolution of society’s social values. “…I have been bewildered by the rapid degeneration of our American society. Half-century ago, we were a decent people…but by 1990…we had become aware that something was seriously wrong.” (Shlichta). How civilization views and interprets ethics and morals changes as we advance with time; the importance of the morality is at a decline, and will continue on a downward spiral as civilization advances.
