Seeing Scout and Jem’s surprise Miss Maudie asks Scout if she was still ashamed of her father. Scout meekly answered “no” and Miss Maudie told them, “Guess you’ll change your tune now. The very idea, didn’t you know his nickname was Ol‘ One-Shot when he was a boy? Why, down at the Landing when he was coming up, if he shot fifteen times and hit fourteen doves he’d complain about wasting ammunition” (129-130).

She offered to give him a nickel but when she went inside to grab it he threw her on the floor and took advantage of her. She accuses Tom of grabbing her by the neck , hitting her, and using vulgar language. A violent attack which allegedly ends in
The small town of Maycomb, Alabama gives the outward appearance of being cozy and cheerful, with quirky neighbors and backyards filled with gardens and treehouses. Beneath the small-town charm lies a place that is home to deep racial injustices and townspeople who refuse to acknowledge the damaging power that their racists views hold. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout spot a dog while looking for small creatures to shoot with their air-rifles. Jem notices immediately that something is wrong, and is wary of the dog’s strange behavior. The children return home and recount the experience to Calpurnia, who calls their father, Atticus, to eliminate the danger and shoot the dog. The mad dog that roams the streets of Maycomb

Jem persists in complaining about Atticus not being like a Father should be so doing what all the other contemporaries’ Dads did, for example drinking, playing football etc. Miss Maudie tries to make Jem realize Atticuss worth she says ‘he make someone’s will air tight’ but he cannot be convinced. Subsequently Atticus shoots Tim Johnson, the dog with rabies with a perfect shot, Jem is astonished and in complete awe of his Father and doesn’t protest about Atticus again.
The classic modern American literature novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by author Harper Lee depicts the lives of main characters; Jeremy “Jem” , Jean Louise “Scout”, their father Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and many more. In this novel, Harper Lee showcases a numerous amount of coming-of-age scenes that demonstrate how the characters are able to grow and evolve as the story continues. One significant coming-of-age scene that the author delineates is the courtroom scene. In this scene Mayella Ewell, daughter of Bob Ewell goes to court against the defendant, Tom Robinson who is accused of “raping” Mayella. Atticus is appointed by the judge to be Tom’s lawyer. In this case, Atticus exhibits logical, emotional and ethical references that bolster Tom. However, the outcome of Atticus’ work prove to be futile. Atticus Finch, the best lawyer in Maycomb, was sitting nervously in his chair as he waited for the town judge to arrive in court . Tom Robinson, Atticus client, was sitting nervously right along with him he was accused for raping Mayella. Atticus is the top notch lawyer he wins a lot of cases but he's not so sure about this case because of racism. His client Tom Robinson is black Atticus has two kids on the back bench hoping that he would win the case they believe he didn't rape her she's just trying to make up a lie he assaulted and raped her she says he pushed and hit her there are bruises on her arm from that she says he was trying to hold her down as he rapes her no one will believe his story because he is black
In the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is the father of two main characters Jem and Scout. Atticus is a respected lawyer in Maycomb County. Atticus treats everyone the same, no matter man, woman, white, or black. This novel portrays Atticus as a wise, calm, and kind. This gives him the respect that he deserves from Maycomb County.
Atticus, the best shot in Maycomb, has given up his fame on the end of a gun but when the people need him he steps up and takes the shot on the neighborhood dog. Scout is then very impressed by her father’s actions stating,
Blatantly expressing emotion was heavily frowned upon in the household that nurtured him throughout his childhood and adolescent years which lead to repressing everything for the sake of praise, and the habit of doing so has remained even though he’s now a grown man. No matter what mood may strike Atticus it remains carefully contained until he’s excused himself from the presence of others—however he struggles to keep a neutral expression plastered on when pushed to the point of tears, but thankfully that’s a rarity. It’s tiring to constantly cover each feeling desiring to flicker across his features, and so he’s turned to guarding himself with a harsh front that speaks freely to steer away most people attempting to grow closer. The added bit
Tom Robinson is the most easily identifiable mockingbird in this story. Although he is a peaceful, respectful man who helps Mayella Ewell without asking for anything in return, he is falsely accused and dies tragically as a result. Mr. Underwood, Maycomb’s newspaper editor, likens Tom’s death to the “senseless slaughter of innocent songbirds by hunters and children” in the editorial he writes immediately after the Negro’s death. As shooting a mockingbird results in the loss of a sweet song-maker, the death of Tom brings no good fruit—it only satisfies the destructive racial prejudice of the South. Tom is also targeted for the same reasons that mockingbirds are targeted
As a result of Atticus's decision, Jem and Scout get into a number of fights with classmates and their cousin when they taunt them and call Atticus a "nigger lover." Life seems to be full of lesson for Scout and Jem. For example, when a rabid dog chases Scout, she discovers that her father, whom she previously thought too old to do anything, does possess some talents. Atticus turns out be a crack shot, killing the dog in one shot at a great distance. Another time the children learn to be tolerant of people who have problems even though they say mean things. A neighbor, Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, derides Atticus and spreads lies about him, and screams insults at the children when they pass by. Jem gets very angry at her and cuts off her flowers from her bushes. Instead of siding with Jem, Atticus feels that what he did is wrong and as punishment, Jem has to read out loud to her every day to take her mind off her predicament. Atticus holds this old woman up as an example of true courage as she
