At the conclusion of The Locket Edmond told Octavie that he didn't lose the locket but that it was stolen from him. I found the ending confusing but after reading it over I found the ending predictable. The conclusion of the locket was predictable because of three major details. The locket being stolen was predictable because the lockets description, Edmond's messmates, and Edmond's battles as a Confederate soldier. The locket was stolen for its overall value. The locket being stolen was predictable because of its description. The locket was golden and old fashioned which means that it could possibly be an antique. In certain places antiques are more valuable then the modern model. If something is valuable people want it. When people want things they either get jealous or they take it for themselves. That is what happen to Edmond someone wanted it more than him so they took it. Suspects of the theft could of been Edmond's messmates. …show more content…
A suspect of the crime is one of Edmond's closet messmates, Nick. I believe that Nick could of stole the locket because of his interest in Edmond. In the text Nick said, "What's that you got round your neck, Ned?" which implies that he is interested in the locket. Another suspect could of been the mysterious messmate Edmond was thinking of at the ending of the story. Instead of Edmond's "allies" that stole the locket it could of been his enemies. The locket being stolen was predictable because of Edmond's battles as a Confederate soldier. In the story there was only one known detail about a recent battle and it was in part one. There was a deceased soldier boy which implies that there was a recent battle. The text states, "Around his neck hung a gold chain and locket." and out of that information you can predict that is Octavie's locket. If it is Octavie's locket that means that the boy either stole it from Edmond as an enemy or an
The locket is a great short story. It is well developed, unified and coherent. Its inspiring and touching and moving. Kate Chopin is a great author with well thought out ideas and creative writing. The ending in The Locket didn't surprise me. The author Chopin was foreshadowing through out the whole story. When Edmond came back to find Octavie, and lost the locket, is was predictable. One, By the amount of love he showed for her. To make sure she knew how much she loved him. Two,
When Ethan brought the locket home to Amma she freaked out and told him to get rid of it. He didn’t get rid of it and brought it to his great aunts house. He asks around and searches for information about the locket. “’We found this locket in the garden behind the great house. We don’t know who it belonged to, but it looks really old.’
The ending of “The Locket” was very surprising. Three reasons the ending was surprising was one, Edmon was still alive. Also, Octavie was always depressed so it was unexpected her husband was still alive. Lastly, Nick, his alli, stole the locket.
One soldier even suggests that the locket is a lucky charm for Edmond, seeing as though he has never even gotten a scratch from battle. This foreshadowing made the ending more predictable because the story continues to lead up to Edmond’s “death” when it has already been discussed that Edmond has never been injured from battle. Though it would’ve been very ironic if Edmond were really dead because of how “lucky” the locket is; that’s not the case here. The locket was introduced to the readers as being lucky, so throughout the story it is then seen as Edmond’s good luck charm, so obviously in the end he would reveal himself as
Edmond has found the treasure he has been longing for and he is now very exciting and can’t wait for the ship to come back and get him.
When the narrator finally opens the briefcase to unveil what secrets lie inside, he is initially shocked that the town’s big shots would give him more than a briefcase.
The ending from the Locket caught me by surprise. It was unexpected because the story begins while in combat as Ned is reading the letter. While reading the letter he was remembering the way that Octavie was dressed and how she took off the locket and gave to him so that he would be or feel safe while in combat. Personally I thought that this was their last good-bye and they were now being separated for good. The Locket is a short story about a young couple and true love for one another.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ending of the The Locket. First Kate Chopin definitely knew how to make the boy who stole the locket sound like Edmond. Then how Octavie was dressed in all black with the locket around her neck once more. Then to add to how she was dressed how she even acted in the second part of the book would lead you to think that Edmond was actually gone.
Since it was a bloody mess on the battlefield, the locket could be something valuable to someone else. This part was the most suspenseful because a conflict was created. Octavie gave Edmond the locket because it was something she loved dearly. Now that it was stolen and never to be found, it creates a melancholy to the
I felt the story of The Locket was bittersweet. In the beginning of the story you know that the locket was given to Edmund by his sweetheart. You also know that Edmund didn't really want the soldier that asked about the locket to know about it. It was almost like it was his own personal secret or that he didn't want the other soldier to make fun of him about the locket. That is why he made it seem like it was just a good luck charm to ward off danger.
The story The Locket was a great and fascinating short story. But many argue that the ending was either predictable or surprising. In my opinion i think that the ending was predictable enough due to the details given in the story.
The Locket was a very interesting short story and my interest was held all the way until the very last sentence. I was very surprised with the ending. I believed Edmund was dead amongst the other soldiers on that hill. The story never explained that some men or one man escaped the ambush. So when the locket was returned to Octavie, I believed it was off of Edmond's body. It was very surprising that nobody from Edmonds family told her that he had survived or even returned until the very end.
He struggles with problems such as betrayal from his best friend Fernand, his fiance cheating on him, and being trapped at the prison named Chateau d'If. To start, his best friend (before betrayal) Fernand turned him in for being associated with Napoleon. His friend says, “You are the son of a clerk and I’m not supposed to want to be you!” meaning that Fernand is jealous of Edmond. He is charged for treason and is brought to the prison of Chateau d’If. The prison is the abyss in his life. Although, here he meets the priest who is also his mentor in the story teaching him many new things. Something he learns is how to read, and another is how to wield a sword which is important at the end of the movie. Together these two learn lots but they also have to endure the bad parts of the prison. A big part is the yearly whipping they have to get and low amount of food. Eventually he get out of prison and when he gets back with his riches and he finds his fiance who was cheating on him. Although she says she is still loyal and she still has the cloth ring he still is angry with her. In the end he forgives her but was definitely a challenge he had to deal with in his journey. To conclude, because of all the challenges Edmond went through and in the end how he became a new person it makes Edmond a hero and a good example for how to deal with
In reading the short story The Locket by Kate Chopin, the conclusion is somewhat of a surprise. At first it seems that one of the main characters, Edmond, had been killed in a battle. A priest found a young man lying dead in the battlefield wearing the locket that Edmunds true love, Octavie, had given him. Then, Octavie, with her hopeless thoughts and conversations with an older man seem to hint at something ominous. In reviewing the story, the author reveals what is to come but it is not evident until the end of the story.
