In the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid Jeff Kinney uses exaggeration, situational irony and motif . The result is hilarious The author uses exaggeration when Greg's mom makes a petition to turn off all electrical devices for one day, she gets the whole neighborhood to sign it and in the first six minutes Greg starts complaining about how it’s been hours since he has played a video game when he got off his Xbox 30 minutes before the experiment. Another time when the author used exaggeration was when Greg Hefley went swimming and the girl that he liked was there so he wanted to empress her his friend noticed and told him that what would really empress her is that he jumped off the high diving board , so Greg climbed up the latter and his vision started …show more content…
one last place that the author used is when Greg's mom takes away all of his electronics and Greg stops eating and drinking water to make his parents asking why he was not eating so he could respond that he needed electronics to function properly. The author uses situational irony when Greg tries to get detention to get out of his mom's social experiment he tries to get detention by putting a thumbtack on the teachers chair and then admitting that it was him but after he did that the teacher thanked him for resolving his butt itch instead of getting detention. Another time that the author uses situational irony is when Greg's mom starts a petition to turn off all electronics for 24 hours i thought that she wasn't going to get many signatures because no one wants to be separated from their phone screen but she got the whole neighborhood to sign it i was not expecting that. A different time that the author uses situational irony is when Greg secretly took his game during the social experiment and got to know kids better by inviting them to play video games , Greg's mom catches him but teaches her a valuable lesson that people connected better
Authors of your favorite books like Harry Potter or the Hunger Games, will often use literary elements such as situational irony to critique society and what's wrong or what's right with it. For example, in the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, situational irony can be found critiquing society. As well as, Ray Bradbury in the short story The Veldt. The Veldt uses situational irony and foreshadowing to imply why technology cannot advance and how it will take over our lives. It also foreshadows the detriments of having a house and a relationship that revolves around technology.
For example, when Mary Maloney kills Patrick, her husband, for deciding to leave her and their unborn baby, this exemplifies one case of situational irony. After getting home from work, Patrick was behaving unnaturally; instead of being ready to go out to eat that night, he sits Mary down and tells her that he wants to leave her. Mary, in shock and consequently unable to process this information, goes downstairs to find something for supper; however, when she comes back up with a leg of lamb, instead of heading to the kitchen to begin cooking, she walks up and calmly smashes the rock-hard leg into the back of Patrick’s head, killing him. The readers see another example of situational irony when Mary decides to make supper after murdering him. A seemingly meek and gentle character, one would not expect Mary to be rational or logical after the murder; contrary to expectations, she puts the lamb into the oven to dispose of the evidence and the murder weapon, and she goes out to the grocery store to build an alibi, acting as if she needs potatoes and peas to feed her (unbeknownst to anyone but Mary) dead husband. Whenever she arrives home and sees her husband dead near the window, she calls the police station, hysterical, saying that someone must have broken into their home and killed him. In this short story, the author employs situational irony to show
Situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected happens. An example of situational irony in the episode is when peter brings home boxes filled with fake lottery tickets that he purchased by taking a second mortgage out on the house. After searching through enormous piles of fake tickets peter explains to the family they were all fake and it was a test. Brian, the dog, criticizes the lottery saying, “Peter this is idiotic. Don’t you know the odds of winning are like a hundred million to one. The lottery is just a tax on stupid people” (MacFarlane, Seth). Peter then brings out a final box and the first ticket Brian picks up is the winning ticket. This is situational irony because after Brian explains that chances of winning the lottery are very slim and only stupid people succumb to the lottos promises of fortune, he finds the winning ticket. The directors reason for including this segment is to hint at the lottery being a scam and having unfair
There are many mind-boggling books made throughout history, but a book written by S.E. Hinton, The Outsiders, melted the hearts of many. . In this book, there is so much conflict between the greasers and socs culminated in violence and physical confrontations. Greasers are the people who live on the east side of Tulsa with less money than middle and higher class. Socs are the higher class that have parties while getting drunk and still being highly respected, unlike the greasers who are looked down at by almost everyone. These differences are only the beginning, and most of the hostility between the socs and greasers based on acts of revenge. The acts of revenge throughout the book, The Outsiders, reveals external conflict, internal conflict, and irony. Revenge is a huge
In the stories “Story of an Hour”, “Everyday Use”, “The Necklace”, and “The Lottery” it is evident that irony was quite a large part of the short story. There is situational irony, which is when the situation turns out differently than expected. Also, dramatic irony is present, which is when you as a reader knows more than the character. The authors seem to base their whole story around irony to surprise their readers.
In the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer uses irony as a method to stating his personal thoughts and opinions , especially about the Catholic Church, without outrightly doing so. “And Nicholas had stroked her loins a bit And kissed her , sweetly he took down his harp And played away, a merry tune and sharp. It happened later she went off to church, This worthy wife, one holiday, to search Her conscience and do the works of Christ.” Since it was socially unacceptable to disregard the workings of the Church during this time. Chaucer used characters Alison and Nicholas as medium to express his feelings.
For example, when an evil scientist makes a laser to shoot down the moon, but instead, it backfires and blows up his lab. Situations like that are a very common and reoccurring principle in many stories and works of literature. Using irony in children’s books are probably most commonly used in the method of teaching a
To begin, in Labyrinth they used the literary device of verbal irony. In this part of the movie Jim Henson used verbal irony when Hoggle had the peach and he said “I couldn't hurt the girl” yet Hoggle gave Sarah the poisonous peach anyways. This was verbal
No matter what problem we have or how big that problem is, we are going to face questions that are both social and ethical in nature. Geoengineering is a proposal that the scientific community agrees might be necessary to stop the global warming crisis. However, many question if this is ethically acceptable. Humans have already manipulated the ecosystem, but intentionally and unintentionally, but are intentional acts on a large scale a good idea or not (Corner & Pidgeon, 2010). We have no idea what can occur when trying any of the methods, as no one has ever done anything like this in the past to reflect on or to give us suggestions for how we can be successful. Depending on where the manipulation occurs, it can cause different responses
Time flew by so quickly, as it always had on shower night. His daily routine included push-ups and back arms, from 5:30 p.m. - his time for a shower. The routine was not only for exercising his body, but also his mind. Over the last year, Greg had come to realize that he could not let the time he had to do—do him. He reversed the sentence. He had to do the
Situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected to happen, happens. Situational irony is shown all throughout the story. One example is at the end of the story when Tessie is about to be stoned. Jackson says, “Mrs. Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands and turned to Mrs. Dunbar. ‘Come on,’ she said. ‘Hurry up.’” It is ironic because at the beginning of the story, Mrs. Delacroix and Tessie were talking with each other as if they were close friends. Tessie arrives to the lottery late: “‘Clean forgot what day it was,’ she said to Mrs. Delacroix, who stood next to her, and they both laughed softly.” The reader would think that Mrs. Delacroix and Mrs. Hutchinson get along because they are talking and laughing with each other, like friends do. It is unexpected that Mrs. Delacroix would select the largest stone, because she seemed to get along with Tessie just a short while earlier. This use of irony helps develop the characterization of Mrs. Delacroix. At first she seems like a nice friend to Tessie, but she quickly turns and rushes to stone
Another example of dramatic irony is when Jareth told Hoggle that if Sarah kissed Hoggle, he would go into the Bog of Eternal Stench. Sarah did not know about this, but the audience does know what is going on. Another example is when Sarah and her friends were facing away from Ludo- her doggish friend- when he fell into a hole. Sarah and her “gang:” all thought he disappeared. The audience knows what is going on, but the characters did not. Jim also uses situational irony- the irony where something happened that the audience and the characters don't expect it. One of the situations when this is used is in the beginning there are fairies, we all expected them to be nice and sweet, but instead they bit Sarah's finger. Later in the movie, Sarah found herself in a junkyard in the labyrinth, she found an exact replica of her house. Her house fell apart while she was in there. The audience and the characters did not expect that. The last example is at the very end where all the characters good or bad, were “partying” with Sarah at the end of the movie. In conclusion, When authors use these 3 kinds of irony it makes the story, labyrinth more
In Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, we explore the demise of the Loman family, carried out through the vehicle of obsession. In order to truly understand this powerful force, we can look towards pop culture to find similar connections. Rapper Aubrey Drake Graham, more commonly known as Drake, asserts his obsessions in a 2011 interview with NY magazine, in which he states “I like sweaters. I have a sweater obsession, I guess” (Rees). This downplayed statement does not do his infatuation justice, however; as Drake currently owns over 1000 sweaters. While Drake can afford to fuel his fanaticism, the thirst for success that plagues Willy, the patriarch of the Loman family, cannot be quenched. Willy’s obsession carries out mass carnage upon
“The Scieszka brothers are scattered all over the country now, but still get together once a year to play a family golf tournament.” This is part of the situational irony because they won't expect to end up in a puke chaos. Another example of this is “All of the brothers - Jim, Jon, Tom, Gregg, Brian, and Jeff - spilled out of the puke wagon and fell in the grass, gagging, yelling, and laughing until we couldn't laugh anymore.” This is also situational irony because first, you wouldn't expect them to all puke and second, for all of them to laugh afterwards which is different from what is expected. The universal truth of all of this is to enjoy all the time you have with your brothers until it all runs
Greg’s moms remained trying to take Greg to the pool of the town. Greg dint wanted to go again to that pool because you needed to go throw the lockers where are grown men’s soaping right out in the open. That was one of the most
