The Old Man and the Sea is both a success and a failure. Santiago is more of a failure than a success. He has had many successes, but he also has many, failures. He is lucky and unlucky, but he never gives up.
Santiago is a failure no doubt about that. In the book, Hemingway states on page 17, he has not caught a fish for 84 days. Santiago caught an 18 foot Marlin but it got eaten by Sharks. As soon as the boy was taken away, they caught 3 good sized fish. Santiago’s skiff was always empty. It seemed like he never caught a fish in his life. In the book, Hemingway states on page 63 In the book, it says the Marlin that he hooked was 2 feet longer than the skiff that he had while going fishing.

In the book, Hemingway states on page 10, the old man has many successes. One of them is that the boy loves him. Another is that the old man is relentless, which means he never gives up. He caught an 18 foot Marlin, which is humongous. Also he is catholic. In the book, Hemingway states on page 16, he has a picture of the sacred heart of Jesus and the blessed Mother. He is humble and respectful. In the book, Hemingway states on page 11, that Santiago is determined to catch a fish. He is also caring, loving, and strong.
