The reason why the poems are similar is because ¨I know why the bird sings¨ and ¨Sympathy¨ are both talking about a bird trapped in a cage and the bird wants to be free, also because the authors use the bird to describe themselves and their problems.
The way sympathy inspired Maya Angelou’s is because maybe she had the same problems and she felt the same as a bird trapped against it’s freedom. And it they both say it in their poems and how they use different types of personification to show their same problems.
Maya Angelou is terrific performer, singer, filmmaker, and civil-rights activist. She is a phenomenal woman, one thing that she does best is writing. She is still living today, I believe her legend will never die. If one would talk to her, he or she would think she has lead a normal, happy life. Her life is blissful now, it was not always perfect. Maya beard enough emotional stress in a time frame that most people do not experience in a lifetime. Her experiences and the lessons learned encouraged her to help others become strong. Maya Angelou is one of the best examples of someone overcoming rape, being mute for several years, and having a child at a young age to achieve success of becoming an accomplished
The title of the poem, “Sympathy”, represents the feeling that the speaker has toward a bird enclosed in a cage. The speaker relates to the bird by repeating the words “I know” and following them with an action of the bird, revealing that he has also
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck portrays a story about human dignity. Maya Angelou's poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" displays a caged bird who deeply yearns for freedom. Both texts share a common theme: The feeling of being unloved is the most terrible hardship.
“Now no one can make you talk-possibly no one can.” This explains that your voice is yours, and no one can make you say something or do something you don’t want to do.Maya Angelou worked in a Store with her Momma in Stamps, Arkansas. But, when Maya was about 8 ,she started to have problems with finding her voice. By analyzing the beginning, middle, and end of I know why the Caged bird sings, it becomes clear that throughout the book Maya Angelou finds out how powerful her voice can be.
Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are two contemporary African-American writers. Although almost a generation apart in age, both women display a remarkable similarity in their lives. Each has written about her experiences growing up in the rural South, Ms. Walker through her essays and Ms. Angelou in her autobiographies. Though they share similar backgrounds, each has a unique style that gives the readers, the gift of their exquisite humanity, with all of its frailties and strengths, joys and sorrows.
The “Sympathy” by Paul Dunbar and “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou have many similarities and differences. For instance, a difference between the two is that “Sympathy” describes the sympathetic feeling of the caged bird directly, as Dunbar tells us that he understands how the caged bird feels. In contrast, “Caged Bird” does not directly tell us that Maya feels similarly to the caged bird, but instead she uses a metaphor to describe this feeling. Additionally, another difference we can see between the two poems is that in “Sympathy” Paul Dunbar is speaking solely about one bird who was once free, and then encaged. However, in “Caged Bird”, Maya Angelou describes two separate birds, one who has entirely experienced freedom, and another who has never
When considering the structure of the poems, they are similar in that they are both written loosely in iambic pentameter. Also, they both have a notable structured rhyme scheme.
“You have tried to destroy me and although I perish daily I shall not be moved,” (Angelou, 2014), says Maya Angelou in her Commencement speech to the 1992 Spelman College graduates. Poet and award-winning author, Maya Angelou, is most well known for her poetry, essay collection, and memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Angelou happened to be the first black female cable car conductor who later started a career in theatre and music (Maya Angelou: Poet and Historian, n.d.). Once her acting and musical career began to take off, Angelou began touring with productions and released her first album Miss Calypso (Maya Angelou Fast Facts, 2017). Later, Angelou earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in the play Look Away and an Emmy Award nomination for the work she performed in the television mini-series Roots (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). Angelou was also the first African American woman to have her screenplay produced (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). Out of the number of poetry collections Angelou published, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die happened to be her most famous collection that was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). The focus of this paper is to critique Angelou’s credibility, sincerity, and appeal to her whole audience in her delivery during the Spelman Commencement Address in 1992.
Her poems speak about the turmoil our world is in. She encourages us to love, love, and love. (Source card #4) In her poem "Human Family", Angelou says, "We are more alike, my friends, then we are unlike." Maya's poems, which include "Equality" and "These yet to be United States", show the pain of humanity and the ignorance of the world. My favorite poem "Phenomenal Woman" shows what it's like to be a woman now a days. "I think the most impressive thing about Maya Angelou's poetry is that it is purely honest.
‘’Sympathy” and “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings¨ they are similar because they are both about a bird that is free doing what it wants without having to be scared to fly. They also relate to each other because they are about a bird that is free and then later the bird gets caged and is not able to be free and fly and do whatever it wants. They also relate to each other because they are both about a bird that is struggling and wondering what he can do to get out of that cage. Another thing is that they are both about a bird that is a believer. By believer I mean that he knows that some day or later he will do something that will have set him free. So I am trying to say that no matter what happens or what he has to do in order to get out. He
Maya Angelou is one out of the best known poets. She has written a lot of poems that inspires and assist people with their lives. She has a “desire humbleness to learn and experience all that life has to offer her” (gale biography in context, “Maya Angelou More than a Poet”) which makes her poems have a meaning to them. In addition, Maya Angelou got a lot of pieces of poems considered equality to her experience as a human of the United States during race times and her experience as a person who worked with other civil right activist. Maya Angelou uses deep themes that leaves the reader to think about the topic is being talked about. In her poem, “Still I Rise” she talks metaphorically about discrimination. In the poem, it states, “does my haughtiness offend you? ( the poetry foundation, “Maya Angelou”). This quote from the poem shows how the rest of the poem is about people believe they is better than other people and that the other people should suffer because they are inferior to the people, but the people being abused should not be embarrassed of who they are and be thankful for life(“Maya Angelou More than a Poet 1”).
Here are the ways I think that the poem “Sympathy” and “I know why the caged bird sings”. I think they are similar because they both could be metaphors. In the poem “Sympathy” he is talking about a caged bird, it could me a metaphor. In reality he could be talking a person or something else. If he is referring to a person the person could be depressed and they might feel like they are caged up and they want to escape that and live a happy life.
One important similarity between these two poems in terms of literary elements is the use of imagery. In the poem "All the Worlds a Stage", William Shakespeare uses many imagery throughout the poem to illustrate the idea that people change and progress through the time meaning that the life is a cycle or process. Shakespeare says," With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances."(Stanza 1, line 18). Basically, this imagery gives the reader a clear idea that throughout a lifetime people move forward. In the same way, the poem "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" is full of imagery in almost every line. Maya Angelou says, “A free bird leaps on the back of
This paper examines the feminist thoughtsas depicted in the works of black female writers, Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. Both carry the common theme of describing the black woman and their sufferings in their novelsBeloved and I know why the caged bird sings. Both the writers handle a common feminist criticism. The silence, passivity and resistance of women protagonists are seen active of the feminist criticism.
“ Sympathy” inspires “ I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” that it was inspired because it was talking about being free and she might want to be free. It might have
