Global warming is known as a slow increase in temperature over the course of an extended period of time (Simpson, 2009). Canadians have long seen this term being used across the media on a whim, but could one imagine that one of the countries most responsible for the crisis is Canada? Global warming is affecting Canadians at an unsettling rate, a notable example being the Lowell Glacier of Kluane National Park, B.C. This glacier has been losing 22 cubic kilometres of ice a year- about 22 billion cubic metres of water. Thus, specialists decided on methods to slow melting, the best solution being to cut down on “human consumption of fossil fuels” (“Unprecedented B.C glacier melt seeps into U.S climate change concerns”, 2014). Regardless of its resolution, Canada will never be able to do enough to completely solve the issue of global warming without making compromises. However, Canadians have been taking the issue more seriously. Three factors exist that …show more content…
Canadians may be doing what they can to put an end to global warming, but whether or not it is enough to make a vast change is debatable.
Despite the efforts made by the Canadian government, global warming is still greatly affecting Canada. While continents such as Australia, Africa, and South America are known for their warmer temperatures, North America faced extremely unusual weather patterns during 2015, the warmest year according to global average in the history of the Earth. Canada, being the anomaly, had the coolest summer in 18 years in the midst of immense global heat. This
The article “Cold warriors,” Gregoire (2008) indicates that climate change leads to environmental issues and melting ice, and the scientists’ researches point out climatic issues in Canada. The author comes up with a point that everyone is responsible for protecting the environment because people around the world are bearing negative effects due to climate degradation. For example, residents in Grise Fiord and Inuit notice a huge differences, the landscape is becoming warmer, softer and unpredictable. Moreover, a greater risk of environmental pollution is caused by climate change. In addition to changes in environment, shrinking glaciers, earlier ice breakup, later freeze-up and less snow caused by warmer temperature bring double-edged effects
Global warming persists as one of the world’s biggest issues today that is causing several problems that include the world’s severe climate and rising sea levels while possibly being the main cause as to why all of mankind could go extinct. This global crisis is known as the steady increase in the world’s average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans that are proven to be permanently changing the world’s climate (Live Science, 2014). This phenomenon is strongly evident as Earth’s temperature has also increased by 2 degrees Celsius since the last century. As a result of this, Canadian glaciers are melting at a higher rate of 2 to 3 feet than of what it was a decade before (Lerner, 2014). All astoundingly happening while the Artic Canadian permafrost has begun to melt (Davidson,2015). The state of this issue in Canada does not seem to be improving as validated through both the scientific evidence as well as the blatant and irrefutable observable evidence.
The reason I chose this issue is because throughout this course, I’ve been very passionate about climate change and I really wanted my last project to take the same focus as well. Additionally, there are many reasonable policies like carbon taxes, which will truly help Canada become more environmentally sustainable. However, many citizens are still not convinced about the urgency of climate change and I’d like to change their minds.
Will McAvoy, the news anchor of HBO’s hit TV-drama The Newsroom once said, “The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one”. Canadians have heard of climate change cries for decades. However, this constant bombardment has lost its effect. As a result, Canadians have been taking baby steps towards resolving this environmental issue. The changes in the ecosystem of Canada and other countries around the world are discussed constantly. The fact is humans are using up the Earth’s resources before they can be replenished. Canadians should reevaluate their lifestyle because their fundamental survival needs such as: land, water and air are being affected tremendously. Through a goal shared by the Canadian Government, big corporations and the average Canadian, that’s when true change can occur.
Forests control the amounts of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere therefore contributing to global warming. However we as a planet have a problem… deforestation.
In Canada, the average annual temperature increases by 1.6oC, which is a higher warming rate when compared to other regions of the world. Canada’s far northern region has shown the strongest warming trends. At the rate Climate Change is affecting Canada, there will be huge amounts of precipitation, and risks of other natural disasters, such as heat waves, flooding, forest fires, and dry spells. As Canada is a maritime nation, the country will be affected by oceanic environments. There will also be reductions in the Arctic sea ice cover, resulting in extreme sea levels, ice conditions, and wave regimes (Government of Canada- Impacts of Climate Change, 2015). Canada’s forests will be affected in many complex ways, affects varying from dramatic, to subtle. Rapid climate change will affect the rate trees grow ate, mortality rates, and the distribution of tree species. Present day scientists have already recorded changes in the forests due to climate change. One recording was increased fire activity in the Western Boreal Forest. Scientists have predicted that forest-dependent communities and Aboriginals will be the first to feel the impacts. This is because the timber supply will suffer losses due to forest fires and smoke pollution (Government of Canada- Natural Resources Canada,
Although more agriculture opportunities are provided, the frequency of droughts, storms, and floods also increased in some regions (“Impact of climate change on Canadian agriculture”, July 3rd 2015, www.agr.gc.ca/ , accessed November 7th 2016). Which destroy infrastructure, sewer systems, and crops, increasing the risk of a downfall of the economy, and a shortened food supply. Global warming also causes health and hygienic issues, such as the increasing risk of contamination of water sources in the Northwest Territories, or the decreasing air quality in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada (“Impact by regions”, September 15th 2010, www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca, accessed November 7th 2016). These problems result in diseases, affecting the health of Canadians. And worse, global warming has a direct impact on Canada’s ecosystem (Debra Davidson, “Climate change”, February 23rd 2011, http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/, accessed November 7th 2016). Most plants and animals are sensitive to changes in temperature and water cycles, which can cause them to move, changing habitats and nature in an area. There is also a high risk of extinction for those who cannot
Climate change will create a number of health problems in the near future and become a top social issue. Climate will create more smog which will lead to higher rates of and other heat related illness.” Montreal currently has approximately 70 annual heat related deaths, while Toronto has 20. According to the (World health organization,2015). The statistic shows why this has become a social issue because people are dying every year affecting our society. Climate change also affects our world economy. The country is spending a lot of money trying to combat the issue as the country is losing natural resources as well as expected natural disasters are taking place. In 2013 there was an increase in floodings in the Toronto and Vancouver area due to unexpected weather. The clean-up bill came to $1.9 billion — the single most costly disaster in Canadian history — and 90 per cent of it was on the federal tab because Canadians cannot buy flood insurance”(Moore,2015.) As you can see the impacts of climate change leave the government with having to pay massive amounts money when it could be used for other things like creating jobs but that money is often now lost. Climate change has an effect on the environment. The glaciers in the Antarctic are melting as a result of increased amounts of heat now we are losing a part of
I chose this article because I think it’s an important topic that affects Canada greatly. People all across the world are affected by climate change, but Canada will experience it more than any other place due to the fact that we are far from the equator and higher up North. This should be a concern to Canadians everywhere, because although people in Nunavut will feel warming worse than in Ontario, we are all still going to be affected by this in some way. It’s never too late to take action, and before conditions get worse, we should look into ways of reducing climate change. Not only is it worrying that people will be harmed and forced to move because of this, but we are hurting our planet, and now is the time to change that. Gregory Flato
“Scientists have been warning about global warming for decades. It's too late to stop it now, but we can lessen its severity and impacts” - David Suzuki. Global warming, a primary topic of debate in various conversations throughout all levels of government, has been an issue for countless years. In fact, of the 134 years recorded, the 10 warmest years have all occurred “since 2000, with the exception of 1998 “(NASA). Solving a global issue such as this is not as easy as it may seem; however ,The Paris Agreement vows to do just that by setting a plan to limit global warming to well below 2°C in “the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal” (Europa). Before signing off on such an agreement one must analyze the many negatives
During the Canadian Climate Change conference, there were many compelling arguments for both sides. On the side that wanted Canada to take immediate action, they brought up the fact that our future generations would have to suffer from the consequences of our selfish, greedy and reckless lifestyle of burning fossil fuels. Furthermore, they exaggerated the outcomes of manmade climate change and bringing up feelings of pity for the future generations because they will have to live in a polluted world that humans created. They said that if we do not take action now, there will be many jobs lost due to climate change. Although there are many jobs in the fossil fuels business, they will not continue forever because they are finite and will run
Climate change is not a new concept. It has been mostly referred to as global warming in the past. As much as people would like to file this issue away as something to deal with at a later date, it simply cannot wait. This problem we face is costing us billions of dollars, forests and wildlife are being eliminated, and people are dying. Starting to sound like a big deal, right? Future generations will be affected the most. People who do not even exist will have to pay for what we, all people, have done to this earth. To begin to make changes, one must realize the severity of the issue. Bill Mckibben, author of “Recalculating the Climate Math,” conveys that “We’ve already raised the world’s temperature by one degree—enough to melt almost half the ice in the Arctic, kill off huge swaths of the world’s coral, and unleash lethal floods and drought. July and August tied for the hottest months ever recorded on our planet, and scientists think they were almost certainly the hottest in the history of human civilization” (Page 3 of 5). Global climate change is a serious problem because it increases natural disasters and is the cause of extreme weather.
Canada occupies most of the continent of North America and strong actions will be applying to intend to be a climate change leader. Climate change is a global challenge whose impacts will be felt by all countries, impacts that already occurring in different parts of the earth. Climate change one of the sensitive topics that the counties are worried and looking for solutions and Canada wants to be a great leader.
Global warming has become an undisputed fact about our current livelihoods; our planet is warming up and we are definitely part of the problem. However, this isn’t the only environmental problem that we should be concerned about. All across the world,
U.S. Conditions like Florida and other states with a high range of hot spells are perfect
