Success with Blinkers On is Fleeting…Failure Follows Fast In order to be successful in school and in the classroom, one must use all resources available take advantage of every opportunity that arises. Many times, there is failure before success, but that allows a person to return with ferocity to win and succeed. There are a number of factors that drive one to push all limits in order to achieve success. In Mordecai Richler's "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz", the themes of success and failure, greed and materialism are prominent and circumscribe the character of Duddy Kravitz. Duddy is victimized by the compulsive greed and pressure to succeed, therefore, failure is noticeable in many

Duddy Kravitz grew up without knowledge of any better life and hustled for every penny he made. His greed fuels his success and also causes his failures. It is important to realize that without his greed, Duddy would not have his land. Nevertheless, he would have a stable relationship with Yvette. The exact nature of Duddy’s greed is exhibited when he works at the Hotel Lac des Sables in Ste. Agathe. He is tricked into acting as banker for a rigged roulette game where he loses three hundred dollars. Owing to this “failure”, Duddy runs away from the resort with shame, but Irwin (the one who swindles him) is forced to return the money. After he receives the money from Irwin, he is welcomed by Mr. Cohen, one of the guests, who along with other contributors has donated five-hundred dollars to pay Duddy back. Here it is observed that Duddy has no moral values: "Duddy rushed upstairs..... and did a few somersaults"(Richler 92). He has just received eight hundred dollars in total. He goes from being a child and escaping from his problems, to a 'man' with money. Duddy's ambitions are based off this childish greed. His greed drives his confidence and gives him an ego. When things do not go his way, he does not know where to turn and reverts to being greedy again. This affects other characters too, such as Virgil, who knows no better of Duddy and looks up to him as a guru. Unfortunately for Virgil, from the moment they met on the train, Duddy's intent was not to provide support to Virgil, but to cheat him and profit from his simple-mindedness. From the moment, they meet, he takes any chance he gets to swindle Virgil. This is first seen when Virgil comes to Montreal. Duddy takes this opportunity to get "free work" done and Virgil believes that Duddy truly cares for him. So when Virgil is desperate for money and help, Duddy gives him a job. At the same time, he is constantly cheating
The first relationship Duddy had with a girl would be with Linda Rubin. Duddy believes that Linda truly has feelings for him; however he eventually discovers that she is really the girlfriend of Irwin Shubert, and was only being used by Irwin to cheat him at his roulette game. After Duddy realizes that he has been conned by Irwin, he eventually decides to run off. Once he begins to enjoy the attention that he receives as a result of people worrying about his absence, he returns back to the hotel and meets Yvette Durelle. At first, Duddy and Yvette shared a stable relationship with one another, and enjoyed each other’s company. However, after Yvette took Duddy down to a somewhat desolate beach, Duddy becomes obsessed with the beach as he believes that this is the land that he will own. At this point, Duddy begins to centralize his goals solely on owning the land, and begins using Yvette as a tool to attain it. Because Yvette is of legal age and has a French-Canadian background, the farmers wouldn’t be reluctant to or refuse to sell her the land as they would be with a young Jew. In addition to Yvette being used as a device for acquiring land, she is also used as a device of Duddy’s sexual pleasure. Duddy treats her as an object, and nearly forces her into having sex with him whenever he feels the need to. He also tells her that if he were to get her pregnant, he would simply get his brother, Lennie, to perform an

Duddy treats her as an object, and nearly forces her into having sex with him whenever he feels the need to. He also tells her that if he were to impregnate her, he would simply get his brother, Lennie, to perform an abortion on her. This was not the only time when he directly communicates a demeaning comment towards Yvette, as Duddy frequently addresses Yvette as his “Girl Friday” throughout the novel. It is unfortunate how Yvette knows about how she is being used by Duddy, however fails to abandon him right there and then.
This jealousy surprisingly brings out the more selfless and responsible side in Duddy. Lennie is an intelligent boy who makes it into medical school and is highly regarded in the family. Although Lennie is more intelligent, he still falls into trouble and Duddy must save him. The problem is, Lennie performs an illegitimate abortion and the abortion goes wrong, so a doctor is called in and finds out. Once this happens Lennie flees town and no one knows where he is or how to find him, so Duddy takes on the challenge.
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz--The Tragic Fall of Duddy A man must pursue his dreams. This is certainly true for everyone of the humankind, for if there were no dreams, there would be no reason to live. Duddy Kravitz understands this perfectly, that is why he is one of the most ambitious young men of his time. From the moment he hears his grandfather says, "A man without land is nobody," he is prepared to seek the land of his dream -- no matter what the cost would be.
Duddy ends up forging Virgil’s signature on a check in order to access Virgil’s bank account and steal his money. Although this money help’s Duddy purchase the remainder of his land, in the process he becomes a despised and wretched tyrant. Not only does this result in the annihilation of Duddy’s friendship with Virgil, but also results in the loss of Yvette’s respect for Duddy. It becomes quite obvious that Duddy did not value his friendships as much as he did his wealth, as if he did, he would’ve earned money the proper way, as a waiter, and wouldn’t have resorted to such ruthless acts in order to attain complacency.
Reading the article Lake and von Baeyer (2005) “Tips for Successful Students”, I realize that most characteristics are necessary for one to succeed as a student in any area of life. For example, one must ask questions and take notes in order to interact with the professor and further their knowledge in a particular subject. These two skills coincide together along with the initiative to achieve a certain stardom. One aspect of learning is never lonesome, though it is possible to be additionally gifted in one region over another.
This made Duddy angry as he doesn’t like people disagreeing with his doings, and so he wave his fist at Hersh and says that. Throughout the novel you are able to see that Duddy is a boy, which needs ‘face’ all the time. He likes to impress the boys, so that they look up to him. He’ll do anything for attention and enjoys very much being the centre of attention all the time.
Sociological imagination played a part in this story because the author Wes Moore made connections on how personal experiences relates to public issues. He grew up in poverty and maintained ambition to receive proper education. Thus this tells readers not to let where you came from or your downfalls hinder you from being successful. The Author Wes Moore displayed that education was the key to all future success. He also showed that there should always be a backup plan in case the funding runs out. In the book it wasn’t luck that determined the fates in
“ In praise of the F word” by Mary Sherry, the author has her point that flunking students is a way that can help students do better in school. Flunking students can be helpful in getting them motivated and lead to success in their education. Students who don’t want to put in effort because they are lazy, a troublemaker, or good student that gets just passed along to next grade deserve to fail. Is it not going to be easy for students to be successful in their education. The students need to try hard to get to their goals. The students have to pass through failure to have the motivation to do better in school. If more students go through the teacher’s threats of failing, the students will want to put in the effort to able

Every student is different, from how they learn to how much effort do they put in when studying. But with the right teacher guiding them to success, nothing is impossible. So, how do we motivate the future generation to succeed in school? The Perils and Promise of Praise, by Carole S. Dweck. The author focus on how to motivate students to succeed in school. From how you talk to them, motivate them to learn and rewarding them.
Sonia describes Miss Katz as a being a different teacher from any other teacher she has had before. She found an importance in not getting stuck in routine learning. Miss Katz motivated her students to challenge themselves. She made the impression of being an educator, but still educating herself. She saw the importance of being a life-long learner. This concept is very applicable and relatable to my future career as an educator. I must always remember to remain a life-long learner. Not only can I apply this concept to my future career, but also my current college experience. Every day I wake up and feel unmotivated and discouraged I can remember to push through because my education is
The final example is showing how it takes many failures to be successful. There are two groups in a clay sculpture class. One group is graded on quantity of the clay. Fifty pounds of clay is an A, forty pounds of clay is a B and so on. The other group is graded on quality of the clay sculptures made. This group was only graded on how well one piece of pottery was made. Can you guess which group created better quality pottery? Contrary to what you might think, the first group made better quality clay sculptures. This demonstrates that people learn more from failing than not failing at all. Throughout this book Maxwell talks about how if you do not fail often, then you are not being creative or adventurous enough. This can be applied to businesses, where most people fail around five or six times before actually succeeding, or just to your own hobby, like sports.
Like when I did track, I wanted to jump at a minimum eleven feet so, I had to practice every day before I could actually do it, but I never gave up. Because of that, I can now soar more than eleven feet. If I would’ve given up I probably would not have enjoyed the meets and I wasn't embarrassed about how much I could jump. It wasn't the best jump, but I was content with it. I could also apply this lesson to simple problems on a daily basis. Like, when a teacher asks you to do something, try to figure it out, and after a couple mistakes don’t just say I give up just ask for help. Now, I’m learning to apply this to everyday things. I also learned that I should just keep trying. I’ve experienced the truth. I’ve done this by applying it to everyday
