In the film, Chaucer is portrayed as a penniless, gambling poet. However, there is no tangible evidence that the real Chaucer was a gambler, though he did suffer financial hardship throughout certain periods of his life. Nevertheless, Paul Bettany’s characterization of Chaucer certainly provides both a pleasant portion of comic relief and recognition of the era’s most popular literature. Throughout the movie, Bettany's Chaucer makes references to his literary and poetic works, including "The Book of the Duchess" and "The Canterbury Tales." Certain elements in A Knight’s Tale are particularly reflective of Chaucer’s works. For example, the movie’s title seems as if it could have come directly out of "The Canterbury Tales."
