Courageous Cassie Throughout the book “Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry” by Mildred D. Taylor, she uses Cassie Logan to show how bad it was through the racism era of this world. She is very courageous and goes through a lot of hard times especially in the climax. Cassie proves her courage by standing up for her brother in school with the books. She also fought her Rival, Lillian Jean. She stands up for herself at the store by wanting to go before the whites. Cassie helped T.J. get home the night he was majorly hurt, and went back to warn pap about the night men. People were not treated fairly. Racism was common enough to ruin a life. Would you take a whoopin for your sibling? Would you take a beating to protect another individual? Cassie logan was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in. Crocker because her brother wanted to have a book in better condition. Instead, Ms. Crocker was really upset and just gave Little Man her book that was in better condition. “I-I said may I have another book please? This one’s dirty.” Of course she doesn’t realize his racial state. Cassie ran into Lillian Jean and she said “I ain’t nasty, and if you’re so worried about bumping into me then you go down there yourself.” She is unaware of her tense racial state at the time of this. That leads to her wanting revenge on “Miz” Lillian Jean. She gains her trust and gets her secrets. Later she brings her into the woods for a “Surprise”, she beats her up and threatens her. IF she had not been courageous this would not have taken
Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to, but it really takes courage to get through it. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie Logan is a very sassy, outspoken eleven year old girl that, in my opinion, is the most courageous character throughout the novel. Some things that made Cassie courageous was that she stood up for Little Man, her little brother, at Great Faith Elementary School, stood up for her and Stacey, her older brother, at the mercantile, and she had to ‘grow up a little’ and apologize to her rival, Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie truly had to be courageous to get through the hard times.
Cassie’s bravery shows throughout the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry. No matter circumstance Cassie helped her friends and stood up to her enemies. Compared to Ruby Bridges they both stood up to their enemies and faced their problems head on.” I cried for T.J. For T.J. and the
Cassie changes and grows as a character through man.vs society, man vs.man, and man vs. self conflicts
T.J. Avery was a rotten thirteen-year old who only wanted attention and would do almost anything to get it. He cheated her brother out of a coat and even made Mama lose her job. From the start of the book you can see that Cassie doesn’t like T.J., but as she grows and matures, you can see her start to care for him. T.J. showed up badly injured one night at the Logan house and Cassie risked her life to get him home and ensure that at least for that night that T.J. would be safe. He had been around two people that committed a crime and if he wasn’t kept safe, he would’ve been hung. T.J. was never really kind to Cassie, but the way she got him home shows that T.J. really was a part of Cassie’s life and that she wanted him to be, therefore making her gamble her life as well as her siblings’ lives to protect him. Cassie got him home safely and made sure to keep her siblings quiet and out of harm’s way so that even if T.J. was not guaranteed safe, she made sure that anyone she was liable for, she kept safe. Even after the incident, Cassie went home and just processed everything, and for her age, she reacted well. She knew how to get her information and how to proceed with it as to keep her composure and to not let it overwhelm
Standing up for what you believe in isn’t always easy, but if you have the courage, you can do anything you put your mind to. Throughout the book, “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry”, by Mildred D. Taylor, I feel that Cassie Logan showed the most courage. Even though she didn’t quite understand why her family was treated the way they were, she knew it wasn’t right. She showed courage when she stood up to Mr. Barnett, when she stood up to Miz Crocker because the “new books” were dirty, and also when she had to stand up to Lillian Jean. For a girl Cassie’s age, she had a deep respect for not only herself, but also the others around her.
I think Cassie is the kind of person who is not afraid to speak her mind or afraid of the consequences. One way of how she showed this was when she bumped into 'Miss' Lillian Jean and Lillian said to get on the road she said: "you crazy". Another she displayed this in the same chapter is inside Mr. Barnett’s store. Where she went up to him and confronted him of what was wrong with the service he was giving and about how it wasn't fair to her. Next an example, from chapter 4 was when Stacey went to go fight T.J. Cassie refused to let her brother go there alone.
During the middle of the book, Cassie gets hurt. Not physically, but mentally. She finds herself in discrimination against a white girl. She does something very bad, gets her revenge. She beats up the white girl and threatens to tell her secrets. All the logan kids want to tell on Cassie, but Stacey wasn’t going to let her get in trouble. “ Mama gonna whip you good, too,” said prideful Little Man still fuming as we approached the school… “Naw you ain’t,” said Stacey back.
Cassie her father and her brother are then moved to a camp camp ashpit. The reason it is called camp ash pit is because of the giant pit of burning corpses not to far from it. They end up going their and she ends up getting a gun, an m16 which she uses for the rest of the book. At one point in time she comes across a huge decision, she can either leave her brother with the government and stay with her dad or keep her brother with her not ensuring his safety. She ends up letting him go with the government to ensure his safety and then she skips back into present day. She was going into a city looking for
When Cassie resist, Mr. Simmons appears and forces her to give Lillian another apology for some reason. A few months later, Cassie sorta prevails the conflict by luring Jean into the woods, beat her up, and make her apologize to her. But before that event happen, Cassie seems to respect and befriend Jean, which creates the question why did Cassie do that? The answer is that instead of
There was a lot of courage to come through this book as well as racism and prejudice. Some of the characters were faces with fear and dangers as well. Scout’s courage on the first day of school showed a lot about her and how she tried to explain to Mrs. Caroline the Cunningham’s way of life, also when she tells Mrs. Caroline Atticus taught her to read. In To Kill a Mocking Bird, on (17) Mrs. Caroline tells Scout “Let’s not let our imaginations run away with us” when scout tells her the first book she read was The Mobile Register.
Well Cassie Logan stood up for her little brother, Little man when he got in trouble. Cassie got whipped because she didn’t want Little Man to get in trouble to after he said he didn’t want his book if it was dirty so Cassie tried to stand up for him. Cassie showed courage by using her actions like she showed she didn’t want the book if Little Man couldn’t have one. On page 27 Cassie said, “I started slowing toward my desk, but as the hickory stick sliced the tense air, I turned back around. ‘Mis Crocker,’ I said, ‘I don’t want my book neither.”
She had help from Mama and kept asking her mother to help her and her brothers understand why blacks were being treated in this manner. The book takes place nine years before the start of World War ll. Throughout the rest of the book she started to understand why people didn't treat them right even though blacks were free. She realizes this when she was in the middle of the market place with Mama and bumped into Lillian Jean and was being screamed at by everyone to apologize and when she finally did apologize she asked Mama on the way home why she was being screamed at by the white people to apologize, mama told cassie that it was because the whites didn’t see blacks as actual people. (CItation) Why are you telling me this? What does it have to do with your
Cassie also learns that she can get limited revenge with impunity providing she finds ways that would put the whites in a humiliating spot if they admitted the incident or if she can do it in a way that prevents them from knowing who is responsible for example the story with her and Lillian Jean when she has become a friend with her and finally beaten her up and nobody would know because if the white girl had informed her father, Stacey would have make sure that every children knows her secrets. This happens after Stacey takes advantage of the rain and the dirt road to temporarily stop the bus from tormenting them. This fact gave confident to Cassie and pushed her to find a way to take a revenge on Lillian Jeans. To have her revenge on the white girl she had to learn the part of self-preservation; when to keep quiet about what she knows and how to make it inconvenient for her enemies to get the best of her.
Cassie now knows a lot about standing up for herself. She learned about weighing her options, finding out if someone is even worth it, and taking action. Now she will be able to make her own choice on whether to seek revenge or forgive anyone else that tries to discriminate her because she is
