Abstract When a company provides a service to the public it is imperative that they remain conscious of their responsibility to maintain an atmosphere that is both ethically and socially sound. In this report the public relations team here at Aribnb will provide communications that are directly focusing on the atmosphere of Airbnb in present and future handlings of discrimination in all forms. In addressing such issues the report will include new strategies that will hold Airbnb, the host, and potential customers accountable of adhering to the anti-discrimination laws set by The Fair Housing Act (FHA) Title VIII that makes it illegal to refuse to sell, rent, or finance a dwelling to any person because of race, color, religion, sex, familial …show more content…
With this statement, Airbnb is essentially making a commitment to their potential guest that they will provide a service that ensures each experience will give both the guest and host a since of safety, stability, and the feeling of belonging despite their race, religion, or creed. Airbnb has recently been faced with a lawsuit that poses accusations of racial discrimination towards potential guest by its host. In dealing with these accusations, Airbnb has both an ethical and social responsibility in handling this issue in the strictest form. After reviewing the Harvard Study, it is blatantly evident that the ethical climate of our company should be challenged and has left minorities along with our customers of non-heterosexual orientation open and vulnerable to discrimination based on their ethnicity or sexuality. As the public relations team, we recognize the importance and the emergent need to do a complete overall on the atmosphere of the company that reestablishes trust and a positive social and ethical platform that address and prevents future discrimination on every level against its potential customers and all …show more content…
This was not the case with Airbnb’s slow response to the most recent lawsuit and accusations that have merely hit the surface of the issue and did not completely rectify the immediate need to restore ethical, social, and public relations that would create an inclusive atmosphere with its
UBER is a recent startup tech company providing a service equivalent to regular taxi with better rates and faster service. The case illustrates that UBER has been using some less than direct approaches to stealing the effectiveness of the competition and limiting their overall profitability. The greater question that is born out of an understanding of this particular case is whether or not it is ok to take short rides from a competing taxi company or call for a ride and cancel afterward, something that is contractually within the rights of the customer, or whether or not this is ethically wrong. In terms of seeking to answer this, the following analysis will leverage my own ethical approach; the consequentialist perspective. This will be done as a means of ascertaining whether or not UBER is in the wrong or whether or not the practices that have been discussed thus far are acceptable.
What do you think of when you hear the word discrimination? In the articles written by Grace Hsiang and Brent Staples we get two different looks at what people think of when they hear the word discrimination. In Grace Hsiang’s article “FOB’s vs. Twinkies The New Discrimination is Interracial” Grace tells about a time where in her sociology class she was a part of a discussion about discrimination and racism. In this discussion she found that most of the discrimination to be by the people from the same race. The Asian Americans divide themselves into two groups, the FOBs, who stay true to their culture and practices.
Racism is an immense issue for everyone around the world. Although racial discrimination is normally thought to only be discrimination from outside of one’s community or culture, it surprisingly exists mostly inside of cultures in which people discriminate members of their own community. For example, In “"FOBs" vs "Twinkies": The New Discrimination Is Intraracial”, Grace Hsiang writes about intraracial discrimination in which Asian Americans who cling to their heritage and Asian Americans who want nothing to do with their heritage discriminate one another. In her article, Hsiang tells us about racism within a community, which is something most people aren't aware about. In contrast, Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples talks about the author’s personal experiences with discrimination as a black male. Unlike Hsiang, Staples talks about being
Waffle House remains cemented in pop culture as a place where one can enjoy a meal with friends at any hour. This image of a fun, all night hangout has recently been tarnished by multiple allegations of racism on the part of both customers and employees. Our group feels the best way to combat this negative association between the restaurant and discrimination would be for Waffle House to become positively involved in charities to support historically African American communities. By releasing more information and keeping an open relationship with the media, Waffle House will be able to more effectively contest negative publicity.
In April 2017, United Airlines suffered a major crisis after a social media video went viral, which showed a passenger by the name of Dr. David Dao being forcibly removed from Flight 3411. There was one major warning sign that preceded this crisis, which occurred in March, just two weeks before Dr. Dao’s forced removal. During this issue, United Airlines prevented two girls from boarding a flight because the leggings they were wearing violated the company’s dress code, resulting in accusations of sexism (Victor & Stevens, 2017). This event highlighted a substantial flaw
In recent years, there has been a surge of queer representation in popular media. Whether or not this representation accurate and positive is another question, but the fact that queer visibility has increased is inarguable. According to this Salon article, “supporting gay rights is good for business” (Kelley). In the article, Kelley discusses the move by companies to publicly show their support for LGBT rights, and how this motion is not “brave,” as much as it is financially beneficial. As we progress further along in the movement for queer rights, more and more companies hop on the bandwagon, because being progressive is profitable. For many of these companies, to say anything unsupportive about the LGBT community will cause an outcry from
“Racism is a system of power and privilege; it can be manifested in people’s attitudes but is rooted in society’s structure” (Collins, 2016). In the history of America, racism has been an on-going issue. Many people would argue that Americans have come a long way from where America used to be, and while that is true, why should the American people be satisfied with just that? Why not fight for complete transformation? Today the United States is more diverse than ever; however, diversity doesn’t automatically mean tolerance. Unfortunately, racism and white privilege still exist and impact American’s everyday lives.
The LGBTQ community are living a life in danger in America. Regardless of the acceptance of same-sex marriage, there are a number problems the LGBTQ community have to face, like the many obstacles to acceptance and equality. In The New York Times article, “The Challenges That Remain for L.G.B.T. People After Marriage Ruling” by Liam Stack, he goes by talking about info that can be reliable with sources that work, with quotes that match with what he needs to say, and usefully using emotional appeals to persuade his audience that the LGBTQ community are in danger. Stack sets about his work of persuading his audience about what is going on in the world is by using strong logical and ethical appeals. In his writing he points out that the LGBTQ community faces discrimination, lack of transgender rights, health care and Immigration and Criminal equity reform.
Discrimination is the weapon of those entrenched in irrational prejudices used to subject and defame their victims. This practice permeates our legal policies – particularly those involving foreigners entering this country. It clouds the judgment of bankers and realtors involved in minorities purchasing homes and apartments. It obstructs fair hiring practices among employers of America’s businesses. It even poison’s our speech and that of our young children – planting the seeds of division which condemn yet another generation to needless confusion and heartless oppression.
In turn, despite the systematic discrimination being reported in the news, the fact remains that more complicated and subliminal forms of discrimination play effect on the lives of individual Americans daily. Until the negative, unwritten norms of society that we discussed are changed, it will remain a constant reminder of the stalemate we Americans face against bigotry, racism, and its’ many forms of
Racial issues have been historically woven into American society and remains prevalent today. Today’s news stories are filled with racial headlines to include police brutality, riots, biased political commentaries, and so many other race related issues. One would be naïve to think that our perceptions of others are not shaped by the parade of news coverage on these matters. While humans are naturally biased in their views and perceptions of many elements in their environment, America was built on premise that its citizens are equal and have unalienable rights to pursue happiness.
This piece instantly reminded me of the True Colors video we watched in class. Moneymaking is one of many ideals that drives people to get out of bed in the morning. Although both Heidi and Joseph offered to write a check for the full amount of the car, “Most significantly, he was offered lower prices than Heidi at four of the six dealerships.” I am by no means surprised, as people often try to take advantage of my dad in the same way. Furthermore, they ponder over him being Arabic, so it is an automatic assumption that because he has an accent, he is not up to par intellectually. People should be more personally accountable in the workplace so that they avoid liability. Working in the real-world means working with other people, and consequently, there will be differences, but these differences do not constitute a car salesman or saleswoman to discriminate on the basis of race or gender. As Dr. Bennett-Alexander can tell by now, I am quite the introvert. As our mothers told us, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. Subsequently, suspending judgement within yourself is one of the most powerful practices at school and in the
Systemic racism, as it operates in the United States, is a multifaceted program intended to deprive, and maintain deprivation. This has been achieved through outright violence and entrapment, but also through the abridgement of “freedoms” and opportunity. Housing discrimination is a varying, but always pernicious part of this program. In the Northern United States, housing discrimination has operated on a paradigm, spanning from overt and violently enforced segregation, to more furtive forms of discrimination (that often hide behind the veil of “public policy” or the “free market”).
As an immigrant to the United States, growing up in the Miami metropolitan area was forgiving for an assimilating nine-year-old. Miami, with its diversity of representation, was contrasted against American Airline’s advertisements that portrayed the current hegemonic state of America – successful white males and white families.
Contemporary privileged American society is largely idealistic in its attitudes towards racial relations; many Americans believe that the United States is a place where hard work and dedication will lead to success, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or other perceived difference. In this idealistic mindset, the only thing keeping you down is yourself. However, this ignores the very real disadvantages that some members of society experience based on their identities. Ignoring problems such as racial discrimination may be an example of “ignorance is bliss” for some but only if they have the privilege and means to achieve bliss, for the remainder, it means that these problems go on being ignored in order to ease the public’s mind.
