`What clothing do you often wear in winter? Do you wear pants and sweatshirts? Not kids in the 1950’s. I interviewed my grandma Liz who was the same age as me around the 1950’s. She was born on April 30th, 1935. She told me women always wore either a dress or a skirt with a nice top. I also asked her questions about fashion, education, and more question about her life. Throughout this project I learned there is a lot of similarities and differences.
Fashion has had many changes since the 1950’s. Even after all this time there still is some similarities between then and fashion now. For example saddle shoes were popular. Now today people wear shoes that look very similar called bands, they also look like another popular shoe brands shoes called Sperrys. One thing that is not similar is back then women would usually only be seen wearing pants when playing a sport such as baseball. However today one of the most common things you see girls wearing in the winter is leggings or jeans. Another thing is when you saw women you would always see them dressed up in skirts or dresses. Instead now you see many women wearing sweatshirts or t-shirts everywhere you go. Lastly many people including my grandma would curl there hair. Like them

Such as, after school was done my grandma would go home and sleep. Today some people also sleep when they go home. Also on the weekends my grandma would babysit neighbor kids. Sometimes on the weekends I do that to. Also my grandma's chores were cleaning the house and doing her laundry. This also is the same as some people, however I only have to do the dishes and my laundry. Next, she said she never went on any family vacations. This is different, because now many families go on vacations. Lastly in the summer she would work on potato farm. Now many people just hang out with their friends or go to the
For example, the article Flappers in the 1920’s states,“ The outer clothing of flappers is even still extremely identifiable. The waists of flapper clothes are dropped to the hipline. She wore stockings - made of rayon ("artificial silk starting in 1923 which the flapper often wore rolled over a garter belt”.Due to that being said the line coco chanel is still being used as a fashion trend now.Women use it in the 1920’s and its a famous fashion brand that is being used now a days as
Another area in which women made changes was with their appearance. Women used their attire and style to show an independence, a certain freedom in which they alone had control. Starting with the “Gibson Girl”, women dressed in long, slim dresses, freeing themselves of the poufy petticoats of yore. Women started wearing shorter dresses and shorter hairstyles, leading to “Flapper Jane”. “Women started wearing “less” clothing, shorter dresses, cutting off their hair, and just being more “sensual” than normal”, (Bliven, 1925).
Furthermore, the world beholds numerous challenges requiring one to overcome these hardships, face on. Enduring my own challenges of face deformities, financial constraints, and difficult coursework, I have the necessary strength to persevere and learn from these arduous challenges. Challenges are something that will be present throughout life, and I must continue to constantly learn how to deal with those upcoming challenges. As the GW honors' program presents challenges in the demanding coursework, I am optimistically looking forward to facing these challenges and become successful.
Before the 1920’s, women’s attire was considered fairly modern. Women would have worn clothing with more of a silhouette than clothing that was loose and flowy. The length of their dresses never revealed more of their leg than just their ankle. Women received bad reputations when showing their knees or even their calfs. Women in the 1920’s also had a different ideal figure than most women do today. The body types women wanted to achieve also transformed into a more feminine look. This look consisted of low bust lines, higher hems lines, and showing off more curves than ever before. These women became unapologetically fearless.
For the workplace and everyday business men wore suits, but they now had a more slim and boyish look to them. Men started to add accessories to their suits like bow ties and knit ties along with changing how the trousers looked, a front crease was added with cuffs witch drew more attention to the shoes they wore. Athletes were becoming huge role models in the 1920s fashion. Golfers started wearing colored sweaters and plus fours, plus sixes, and plus eights pants. Tennis players wearing white trousers and v-neck sweaters which influenced what young men wore around town.
In Silence of the Lambs the second factor is most important for this film excerpt. The way the author developed cannibal lector to have OCD characteristics and a great set of senses, like smell, shows that real serial killers are quite bright. By having him be very intricate and social, it shows that most crazy people are very intelligent and not just dumb. This adds to the plot, by examining a smart serial killer this may lead them to better understand the current killer.

There are very clearly many ways that the Party controls their society in George Orwell’s

The 1920’s fashion was a period of liberation, change, and even more importantly a movement towards the modern era. Fashion in the 1920’s varied throughout the decade but one could see the noticeable change from the previous fashion statements and eras. At the start of the decade, women began emancipating themselves from the constricting fashions by wearing more comfortable apparel. As women gained more rights and World War I forced them to become more independent, flappers came to be, mass-produced garments became available, and artistic movements increased in popularity, one can see how the fashions from the roaring twenties characterized the time and redefined womanhood. One of the major fashions in the 1800s was the hoop skirt (Victorian Fashion). Jacket style dresses
The 1920’s, also called the roaring 20’s, was a time of change. During this time period the fashion for both men and women was changing immensely. The aftermath of WWI caused America to enter a vigorous era. As a result of the role of women during the war, many customs and morals were changing. The Stock Market started booming, many new dances and music came about, and women got the right to vote and enter the workforce. There was an uprise in almost every activity, and fashion was definitely one (Tirocchi, Anna and Laura). Although fashion varied throughout the decade, one could notice a drastic change from the prior fashion.
In the 1930s the Great Depression influenced women’s fashion because they needed to save money and they had to reuse a fair amount of materials from their old clothes. The 1930s also had gender roles, most people were employed but they were not the best jobs. They had low paying jobs. The women needed a full education while the men only graduated from elementary school. There were no equal rights. Women did everything, for example, they did everything at home, they made dinner, made sure the house was clean, they needed to look presentable after work for their husbands, and they had to work at the house especially during the Great
My grandmother said that she never rested from day and night because her chores were far from being done. From cleaning the house and to taking care of her eight children all on her own was a challenge. My grandfather did not take any responsibilities because men believed that nurturing and caring for a child was a duty of women, not men. Because there were many mouths to feed and money was short, she would always buy things
The Years between the 1950’s and 1960’s was an explosive time in fashion. The 50’s represented an out coming of the new generation. People began to gain their own personal style and appearance, influenced by films and singers (“Vintage Fashion”). Their styles incorporated leather, jeans, corduroy, and the ballet shoes for the girls. Men’s wear began to drastically change. Men would wear a leather jacket, with jeans that narrowed at the bottom, and a simple t-shirt (Peacock 210-211). This was the first time in history that jeans were not just worn by the working class but by all men (“Brief History”). The man’s lust for flesh grew during this time, so women’s skirts began to get shorter and the bikini was invented. Clothes were made to glorify the female body and emphasize every curve. It wasn’t until the Barbie doll was created in the late 50’s that young girls began to have a separate fashion from their mothers. Young girls would wear sweaters with full skirts or pants
