1984 is one of the most spellbinding books in the world. It was written in 1948 by George Orwell and it criticizes the totalitarian regimes of the 30’s and 40’s. Orwell creates an intriguing and imaginary society that we will leave us thoughtful about nowadays life. The action takes place in a divided world after a big war (just like after the Second World War). Winston Smith, the main character, lives in England, part of Oceania, and he is a member of the ruling party. He works as a record editor in Records Department at the Ministry of Truth, where he has to “rewrite” the nation History. However, he is totally against this regime, where citizens are always under the control of Big Brother. How is Winston going to end? Is he going to be another victim of the Big Brother? This book was written at 70 years and, in many ways, it represents our modern society. Firstly, we still have countries hidden behind ideological walls, which are a barrier to development. It’s the example of countries like North Korea, Cuba, China and Russia (the last two are more opened to the world, but we can still see the influences of the communist dictatorships). There, people don’t have the freedom to express themselves freely and the State has mechanisms to control and influence people. I think it’s incomprehensible that in the twentieth first century we still have these kinds of problems. Furthermore, another aspect from the book present in our society is the Big Brother. “Big Brother is watching you” and the truth is that in many cities, nowadays, we have cameras all around us, recording our actions. However, I agree with this strategy of having cameras all around because it gives us a safety
