How Does Walden Impact The Rest Of The World

Decent Essays

Within the “Conclusion,” of Walden, Thoreau is describing why he left when he uses the quote, “How worn and dusty, then, must be the highways of the world, how deep the ruts of tradition and conformity!” Within this quote, he is discussing how within only a few days of arriving at the Walden Pond, his treks had made a path through the woods. So, he is pondering how if he can have that kind of impact within only a few days, what kind of impact the rest of the world has in heavily traveled areas. The second part of the quote proceeds into a comparison to society. Thoreau compares the path he has created in the ground to the way society has shaped the behaviors of people over generations. As a transcendentalist, he is encouraging non-conformity.
