How Does Tim O Brien Use Antithesis In The Things They Carried

In the fictional novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien vividly explains the fear and trauma the soldiers encountered during the Vietnam War. Many of these soldiers are very young and inexperienced. They begin to witness their acquaintances’ tragic demise, and kill other innocent lives on their own. Many people have a background knowledge on the basis of what soldiers face each day, but they don’t have a clear understanding of what goes through these individual’s minds when they’re at war. O’Brien gives descriptive details on the soldiers’ true character by appealing to emotions, using antithesis and imagery.
With this in mind, O’Brien describes many equipment the soldiers carry to the Vietnam War, such as weapons, sentimental items, food and most significant; their “emotional baggage”. They dreamed about freedom birds, which symbolizes their freedom from the war. As the soldiers were on guard in the night, they pictured themselves being carried away by a jumbo jet. According to O’Brien, they “laughed and held on tight, feeling the cold slap of wind and altitude, soaring, thinking it’s over, I’m gone!” The freedom birds brings a sense satisfaction to the soldiers. This reminds them that they would not be depressed forever and they would not have to deal with their emotional baggage anymore. Furthermore, O’Brien describes this jumbo jet as if it is a real bird. He explains its appearance as “a big sleek silver bird with feathers and talons high and screeching”, to explain the beauty of this plane. He uses imagery to emphasize the significance the freedom birds has on them. O’Brien gives a clear picture to allow readers to understand that even with their emotional baggage, they still have hope that they will one day be happy
