The Act of Bravery in The Hobbit ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien is a novel about the journey of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, on an unexpected adventure to reclaim the treasure that Smaug the dragon was guarding, which rightfully belonged to the dwarves. One of the major themes of this novel is courage and how Bilbo went from a timid hobbit to a brave hero. Throughout the use of various literary devices such as symbolism and character dialogue, Tolkien develops this theme. Throughout the novel, Tolkien uses the ring as a symbol of power, which helps lead to Bilbo’s transformation. The ring has the power to make the individual wearing it invisible. One of the differences being the reason Gandalf’s reason for finding Bilbo. In the book Gandalf seeks out Bilbo for the quest because he realizes that Bilbo has something Tookish about him like his mother, Belladonna Took. While in the film adaptation, Gandalf talks about how he has known Bilbo since he was a kid, back when Bilbo was adventurous, enthusiastic, and not scared to face danger. Another difference is when Bilbo leaves his hobbit-hole to go on an adventure with the dwarves. In the book, Bilbo is rushed and unprepared. He was also left behind and had to catch up with the dwarves. In the film adaptation, he still has to catch up with the dwarves but is more prepared as he has a backpack full of stuff, unlike in the book where he forgot his pocket-handkerchief and other important items. Another difference is that the film adaptation adds new characters and subplots that were not present in the book. One of the new characters that was added to the films was Tauriel, who served as a love interest for one of the dwarves, Kili. Also, the film adaptation seems too long compared to the book. ‘The Hobbit’ has a film adaptation that takes place throughout three different films, each being over two hours long while the book is only around three hundred
