I used the song “Mary’s Song” by Taylor swift to represent the concept of proximity. In this song Taylor she shares a story of two young children who grew up together in a small town. They have spent many nights together playing until she turned sixteen and the two started dating. Taylor sings,” And our daddies used to joke about the two of us/They never believed we'd really fall in love” (Taylor Swift 2006). The two ended up getting married and growing old in their small hometown. This song represents the idea of proximity because the two lived in the same small town where they shared similar childhoods. If they did not live in this small town the chances of the two meeting would be very slim. Taylor also touches on mere-exposure effect as
Even though she still lived in LA, she feels the connection as a person who feels a connection to their childhood home. Even though she no longer lives there, she still remembers the memories she had
Having a strong relationship with someone is only truly possible if they are close together because
* Close relationships can be formed between good friends, the closer the relationship becomes the more thoughts, feelings and hopes are shared
Taking place in the rural woods, Mary Hood’s short story “How Far She Went” illustrates a grandmother and a granddaughter’s fight for survival due to the granddaughter’s desire to be rebellious. The incorporation of symbolism proves vital to the reader as it depicts a lake as an escape from the dangers of violence and sexuality, in addition to the rebirth of a new understanding of life through experiences learned. When individuals adopt the rebellious mindset of ignoring a set of rules, an intense experience may occur allowing for individual growth and maturation.
The topic I chose for this paper is the article What Mary Didn’t Know written by Frank Jackson. Essentially, What Mary Didn’t Know focuses on a woman, Mary, who is confined to a room where nothing contains any colour, everything is in black and white. She is educated this same way, strictly through means black and white tools. She is taught every possible thing there is to know about the physical nature of our world. Jackson concludes that physicalism must be false, for when she is let out of that black and white room, having complete knowledge of the physical world, that she will learn what the colour red is. Jackson believes that through his article, he has disproven physicalism. This paper will prove why Jackson’s article is false, and
On the same note, Fried (2000) claims that individuals maintain proximity to their significant place because it offers protection and a sense of
There is an inextricable link between physical locations and personal identity: the one affects the other as the environmental psychologist Harold Proshansky states in “The City and Self-Identity”(Proshansky, 1983) “Place-identity is defined as those dimensions of self that define the individual’s personal identity in relation to the physical environment”. So, does the way locations affect our individual identity determine how we are included or excluded from parts of society, and how is the perception of places influenced by contrasts with other locations resulting in a sense of attachment or disassociation?
Wife and Servant: An Explication of Mary, Lady Chudleigh "To the Ladies" "To the Ladies," by Mary, Lady Chudleigh is a poem written in a literal form for the ladies who may be single and want to get married or for the ladies that are married. The poem's main point is to warn the ladies about marriage and being like "servants" (l. 1-2) and how they should be proud like men. Since this poem was written in the seventeen hundreds, women had to listen to their husbands like servants and avoid the riskiness of shaming men at the time. The author here is trying to change the perspective of wives having to be like servants to their husbands and for them to stand up for themselves and to be wise.
Another example is when Huck and Jim are alone on Jackson’s island. Huck tells Jim “Jim, this is nice,” “I wouldn’t want to be nowhere else but here” (Twain; Ch. 9, pg. 35). Huck enjoys Jim’s company and would not want to be with anyone else in that moment. These are moments friends share, and it is evident they are partners whom
Taylor Swift is widely known for her fiery, passionate, and vengeful songs that serve often as relatable pieces to young women that are enduring or overcoming awful breakups. Late in 2014, she released the universally anticipated album titled 1989, which entails sixteen tracks primarily focused on blossoming self-discovery. Specifically, in the tracks “New Romantics,” “Wonderland,” and “Clean,” Swift illustrates the time between starting a new romance, falling blindly in love, and the time that passes between her breakup and ultimate freedom from the affliction. Implementing techniques of figurative language, she utilizes contradiction, metaphors, and similes in order to convey the numerous stages that take place in between the butterflies
'Proximity' is shorthand for Lord Atkin's neighbour principle. It means that there must be legal proximity, i.e. a legal relationship between the parties from which the law will attribute a duty of care.
Some more examples of these include in the book The Fault in Our Stars. Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace become very close and they end up going on a vacation together, causing both of their healths to be at risk. Even though most likely nothing was going to happen, if it were to happen it could be deadly. Besides going on vacation together this couple spends all of their time together. Both of their parents are unsure of this romance because they are both unhealthy. If something were to happen to one another, they know it would make a strong impact on them. So, all of these are high-risk not only by traveling far from their homes and doctors, but also because of becoming so close. A song that can represent something high-risk is the song “Someone Like You”, by Adele. This song represents that because once you fall in love you become so used to that person and always having them there. Well, that can surely be a problem once you break up. Especially when you think they’re the one. I just think people need to be more careful and cautious with what they do with not only their lives but with other people’s lives because that can be much more
In musical superstar Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Blank Space,” she is portraying herself as the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is the media’s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media’s concept of her love life. The video is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate opinion of her.
Two clichés: Absence makes the heart grow fonder and Out of sight, out of mind. Which one of these two conflicting views is closer to the reality? As it turns out, it does not really matter that much since long distance relationships (LDR) suffer from exactly the same strengths and weaknesses as proximal relationships. Whether two people are going to have fulfilling relationship does not only depend on their geographical closeness. What matters is quality, not quantity. According to one expert on LDRs, "the majority of studies that have been done show no greater risk of an LDR breaking up than any other relationship (Guldner, 2004, p. 6)." An LDR relationship has the same likelihood of
