In the story, Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck, portrays a great deal of themes. Loneliness is one of the themes. Crooks and Candy both struggle with loneliness. Crooks is lonely because the white men treat him abominably because he is African American. Candy is lonely because he misses dog, who was shot by Carlson.
African-Americans were mistreated and discriminated against during the Great Depression. In Of Mice and Men took place during the Great Depression and Crooks was the only African-American on the ranch. He is lonely considering everyone on the ranch is white and they are not friends with Crooks. He says, “Maybe you see now. You got George. You know he's goin' to come back. The loneliness of Crooks, Lennie, Candy, and Curley's wife is shown in many different ways. The reason Crooks shows loneliness is because he is black. For example, Crooks cannot play cards or sit in the cabin with the other guys because he is colored. The reason Lennie shows loneliness is because he is mentally ill. For example, nobody wants to hang with him because Lennie will miss everything up.
The Unwanted John Steinbeck expresses loneliness, which is the feeling of being lost and forgotten, through many characters in the novella Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck portrays the different forms of loneliness through many different people such as George, Lennie, Curley’s wife, and Crooks. Although these characters still have people in their lives, Steinbeck indicates a form of loneliness they possess. Albert Schweitzer always said, “We are all so much together, but we are all dying of loneliness.” Crooks may be the definition of loneliness, because he portrays it the most in Of Mice and Men.
In the book Mice and Men by Steven Steinbeck is based at the time during the Great Depression and people were not as close as people are nowadays. It was a hard time for people living in that time period because money was scarce and the weather was not that good during the Great Depression. It was a hard time for people. It was every man for themselves, when it came to everything. Loneliness was at an all-time high where people were not wanting to help other people, everyone was on their own.

In the Bible, the first thing God says is not good is loneliness; however, people are often excluded despite the negative effect on one’s emotional state. For example, both Steinbeck and Anaya make the reader aware of how society isolates individuals for many reasons that cannot be controlled; using Crooks and Antonio, they show the effects of racism and differences of lifestyle on the ways people interact. To begin, in Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, Crooks suffers from isolation on the farm. Although some of his feelings of loneliness are due to his own internal defenses, much of it is caused by society’s views of the time.

When you think of “lonely characters”, many come to mind, for many different reasons. Forrest Gump is a perfect, well known archetype of loneliness. He lives a life of solitude, having not many friends due to his disability. Even though there are people who love him and care for him, they don’t truly relate to his way of life. He spends most of his life away from home, dealing with death frequently.
Loneliness has a negative effect on everyone throughout this novel. Most of the characters such as Curly, Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife all accept the fact that at one time or another in the novel to feeling very deep and extreme sense of loneliness. Each character aspires to have someone by their side, someone who will always be there for them, and someone they can trust and love. In the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck teaches that isolation can bring out the bad in people because there is a lack of comradeship which should bring everybody happiness and love. George and Lennie defy the novel’s theme of loneliness mostly because throughout the novel they have each other.
In Steinbeck’s novella, most of the characters suffer loneliness form different reasons this could be seen from the location that is neighboring the ranch is called ‘Soledad’ which translates from Spanish to ‘solitude’ so loneliness is immediately established as an important theme in the story. The most notable ones are Curly’s wife, crooks and candy. As the story progresses we find the reasons why and how. Curly’s wife lonely in the novella of Steinbeck as she is not treated well this is which leads to her with the other men in the ranch. However, she acts like this because she has a poor relationship with her husband.
Loneliness, a feeling of sadness because one has no friends or company, a feeling of depression and solitude. A theme which Steinbeck used many times throughout the novella. Steinbeck used these techniques to portray many of his characters in his book, of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife, crooks, and candy were mainly the three which had expressed loneliness several times in the story. Everybody does tend to get lonely once in a while but in this case Steinbeck highlights life on the ranch in the early 1930’s.
Being an outcast/isolated member of society leads to being seen differently by others. In the novella. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck introduces two men George and Lennie embarking on a new job and working on achieving the American dream. These two men were dropped off at the incorrect location and left a few miles far from the Ranch in Soledad, California. Nearly everyone in Soledad was struggling to find a job, food, and money.
Is Loneliness a way someone could be hurt or killed? In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck loneliness is a prominent theme, and causes of pain or loss. Curley's wife is the only women on the farm and Curly forces her not to be with any other people, Crooks is the only black man and is forced to live in the stable place and be alone, and candy is an old man missing a hand which makes him not be able to work very well, he feels he has no importance to anyone. There is only one women on the whole ranch and its Curly’s wife, this cause her to be lonely for a few reason one of which is that she has no other women to talk to makes her feel like an outcast and very lonely. Another reason that she feels lonely is that even when she tries
“You think, think, think.” (Tarantino). There are many similarities between the article of Silla Zelia and the book Of Mice and Men. It is important for people to feel important. The Characters in Of Mice and Men seem to be lonely, yet they are near others. This could be caused by social barriers, personal choice, or perhaps both.
The novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck contains an evident theme of loneliness and isolation. Steinbeck uses his characters to invoke this theme throughout the novella. One character that is able to portray this perfectly is Curley's wife. John Steinbeck's main message through the use of the theme of loneliness, is that it's better to isolate oneself from others in order to achieve your goals.
