“So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him”. This quote, of course, is from the bible from Hebrews 9:28. The quote is talking about when Jesus Christ was sacrificed. Hebrews 9:28 is saying that because he was killed, when he comes back to life his sins would be washed away. The well-known Bible was written during the 6th century, but a modern example of speaking of sacrifice is The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the year 1692, when believing in the Bible wholeheartedly was as common as using your phone is today. People who did not stray from following the bible, were looked up to and revered in the community. The author, Arthur Miller establishes …show more content…
In The Crucible, John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Giles Corey were all characters that portrayed acts of sacrifice and were looked at like heroes in their own respect. For example, John Proctor sacrificed his pride and social status when he outed his own affair with Abigail to try and discredit her. To illustrate, “I have known her… I thought of her softly, God help me, I lusted… But it is a whores vengance” (Miller 110). In this quote, Proctor, who had, up until this point, been admired by the community for his holiness, told everyone about his unholy affair. He told everyone about that embarrassing event in hopes that they see that Abigail is not as good as she likes to says she is and it's making this all up to get back with Proctor. Additionally, Elizabeth Proctor sacrificed her morals to try and protect the love of her life. Arthur Miller portrayed this when he had Elizabeth say ”no, sir” to Danforth questioning her about if her husband had an affair (Miller 113). Elizabeth was a woman who, previously, would never lie, but when
Elizabeth Proctor provided a big ironic moment in The Crucible when she was in the courtroom in Act 4. Elizabeth was known for her honesty and integrity throughout the town of Salem and especially to John. So it’s rather shocking that this event happened. The example of this starts with Judge Danforth asking, “Your husband-did he indeed turn from you?” Elizabeth then replies with “My husband-is a goodly man, sir.” Danforth proceeds, “Then he did not turn from you.” Liz says, “He-” Danforth interrupts, “Look at me! To your own knowledge, has John Proctor ever committed the crime of Lechery? Answer my question! Is your husband a Lecher?” Liz then lies with, “No, sir.” The irony is pretty obvious in this scene as Mrs. Proctor fibs when John told
One of the examples of characters sacrificing other parts of their lives to maintain their reputation is John Proctor. Those who was accused of being a witch which only gave him two choices, he could either confess to being a witch and become imprisoned for the rest of his life and his reputation would be ruined. The other choice was to not confess and be hung in the town square, but they would have their reputation destroyed. John Proctor choose to confess to being a witch, but when he had to sign a document that would be put
As Coco Chanel once said, “Guilt is perhaps the most painful companion of death.” This is found to be true when John Proctor, from The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is hanged for all of the wrong reasons. Granted, it is the guilt that killed him, not the crimes he was wrongfully accused of. Proctor displayed this feeling of sin to his wife, Elizabeth, Abigail, and towards himself.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character John Proctor had as motivation in act 3 and 4, prove that the girls were lying, save his wife and his friend’s wives, and doing what is right until his death no matter what society offered him to give up. First, in act 3 John Proctor is trying to prove that the girls were lying in order to end the witch trials and free his wife and his friend’s wives as well. Moreover, he brought as evidence Mary Warren who confirms that it was pretense(Miller 106).However, he was asked why he ripped the court’s warrant and about his absence in church and Proctor answered that he ripped because “it were temper”() and respond to the absence by saying: I have no love for Parris. It is no secret. But God I surely love”(), and this was all true, showing that he is an honest man.
Courage is not something that comes easy, to have courage you must be able to be brave enough to do something that others are too afraid to do. When others fear to stand up to the witch trials, John Proctor shows his courage by trying to put them to an end.In The Crucible by Arthur Miller John Proctor is the most courageous character because he is brave enough to attempt to end the witch trials by talking to abigail, going to trial, and refusing to confess to witchcraft.
In the play The Crucible there was a time when someone from the play sacrificed a principle that is important for a person that is important to them. An example of this from the play is when Elizabeth Proctor sacrificed the important principle of lying to save her husband John Proctor’s name. What I mean by this is Elizabeth lied to the court when explaining if she knew about the affair between Abigail and John and she lied and told everyone she didn’t know about it because she didn’t want to give their community a bad image on John. Elizabeth was a good christian women that never lied so that is why John was so shocked when she told everyone that she did not know about the affair. She lied to save her husband. That is an example from the story
When death is the punishment for someone who refuses to incriminate themselves and others in their community, should an individual lie to save their own life? In The Crucible Arthur Miller, the author of the play, disagrees and uses a character named John Proctor to illustrate this. Through his actions, motivations, and words John Proctor develops and illustrates the theme that lies ultimately result in more pain than honesty. Proctor encounters many conflicts and obstacles in the play involving the honesty versus lies struggle, but ultimately finds peace by being true to himself and others.
“The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller in 1852 , and based on the Salem witch hunt had a tragic hero named John Proctor. John Proctor is a respected man in his community. He is married to a woman named Elizabeth and has children. But a while ago, he and a girl named Abagail had a thing together and John at the end had committed adultery. Abagail is obsessed with John and will do anything to have him.He has since broken it off, but it would come back to haunt him as his crucial mistake and the events occurring in Salem will ultimately end his life. But before he ever dies he confesses his sin and redeem himself by not confessing to a lie, and setting an example for all others who have been convicted of witchcraft. John Proctor is someone who
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it is now showing how much people sacrifice for one another. Not only did John Proctor have an affair with Abigail, he also admitted to it. During court Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife, was not allowed in the same room as John was because the committee of the court wanted to know if this was true or not. Keeping them in separate rooms prevented Elizabeth to know whether or not John told the people if he admitted to it. Elizabeth lies because she doesn’t want her family to look bad.
In the play, The Crucible, MIller allows the reader to learn something about the world by showing us that the sins that we have committed will keep weighing us down, until we confess them. John Proctor commits adultery with Abigail Williams, and keeps this affair a secret from Elizabeth. Proctor starts to feel guilty, and mad at himself. He attempts to pretend that the affair never happened. “But I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind, we never touched, Abby…..Proctor, angered--at himself as well: You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth!” (24) This piece of textual evidence proves that Proctor is unable to forgive himself for what he has done to Elizabeth, and what he has done to himself to lose his goodness.
In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the character John Proctor will not lie and confess to something he did not do. Thus, he is hanged for his principles. Proctor has two main principles he felt were more important to respect and uphold than his own life. The most obvious one was his reputation. In theocratic Salem, where private and public ethics are regarded equally, one’s reputation plays an important role. In such an environment where reputation is regarded so highly many are afraid of guilt by association. Various characters base their actions on the desire to protect their own reputations, in order to keep them in the best light possible. Towards the beginning of the play, John Proctor sought to keep his good name
John Proctor symbolizes a crucible because of the test he goes through that reveals his true character. In the middle of the story, Elizabeth is taken away because Abigail has accused her, and she is going to jail to most likely die. Proctor cannot accept this and says, “My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me” (1181) because he knows the only reason she was accused was to get back at John. Proctor knows what he has done and now his wife is going to face the consequences of it and we see his true character and strength here when he promises that he will stand up and fight for Elizabeth and will do whatever it takes to own up to his mistakes and make them right. Later in the story, Proctor is stuck in a hard place and can confess to the crime of lechery and take the punishment as it is given, or back down and let the blame fall on Elizebeth. After a long time of struggling to accept what he did, he finally lets go and confesses that he has committed lechery. This confession strengthens his character because he has done the right thing and has finally been freed of the burden
People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.
In the play The Crucible by Authur Miller, John Proctor's pride is threatened by the Salem Witch trials. Proctor, like almost everyone else in Salem, is accused of witchcraft and working for the devil. Cracking under constant pressure and fed up with the attacks of the court, most of the accused confess; John Proctor, however, believes that he must stand for what is right and protect his own reputation. Proctor greatly demonstrates the theme of pride, as he constantly seeks ways to improve his reputation and good name; however, when the court tries his wife on account of witchcraft, Proctor is able to turn away from his blinding self-esteem and ultimately sacrifices his life achievements in the hope of freeing his wife of all charges.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible presents Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams who serve important roles through their unique characteristics and thinking. John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, has two defining characteristics that show throughout this play: she not only lives to please everyone around her and behaves passively, but she lacks the assertiveness to confront what lies directly under her nose. However, Abigail, the girl John Proctor commits the crime of adultery with, manipulates those around her. She is keen to act upon an opportunity when one arises and feels a determination to get her way. While Elizabeth and Abigail are similar in their love for John Proctor, Elizabeth differs from Abigail through her tendency to try to please everyone and keep her own emotions bottled up, while Abigail believes the world revolves around her and works to make things go her own way.
