Is it common to take revenge on someone? Does it provide a feeling of greatness, justice or confidence? In “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator Montresor enacts his revenge on a drunken friend, Fortunato. Throughout the story the author Edgar Allen Poe uses moods like irony and Imagery to enhance his theme of revenge.
To start, Poe uses Imagery in the story to allure revenge and to improve upon the suspense. “Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris” (Poe 348). Edgars Allen Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado portrays two great examples of how greed and ignorance combined can lead to a quick ending, both physically and mentally. The story possesses two different aspects of an ending through two similar but yet different characters. Both characters possess the trait of greed, which hinders their ability to think rationally. The most obvious aspect of greed is carried out by Montresor, because this is a “short story of revenge.” He seeks to make Fortunato, the other character possessing the ignorant and greed trait, feel the pain that he has supposedly dealt onto Montresor. Throughout the book, one can experience how these two awful traits overtake them and eventually end their lives.
Imagine, you are walking towards a dark, discreet, and desolate room, the ground below you squeaks loudly! You start to panic, footsteps follow behind you “STOMP, STOMP”. The noise gets louder and louder “STOMP!, STOMP”, in the distance not clear to you. As a way to create a different types of sensory driven story pieces like, “ The Cask of The Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, “ Feather Pillows” by Horacio Quiroga, and “ House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar use a sense of dread to drive their works of literature forward. As you're expecting a jump scare in a movie, the factor of uncertainty is used to hook in the audience and create the sense of fear.

What is point of view? Point of view is “the speaker, voice, narrator, or persona of a work; the position from details are perceived and related; a centralizing mind or intelligence; not to be confused with opinion or belief “(Roberts, 119). Edgar Allan Poe famously uses point of view in all of his writings. According to Gargano, “An objective narrator is telling a terrible story objectively might be frightening, but even more frightening is a man telling without emotion the story of his own terrible crime”(Gargano, 52). In Poe’s story stories: “The Cask of Amontillado”, “Black Cat”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, and “The Tell Tale Heart” he uses point of view to influence the readers’ understanding of the selections.
In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe created a suspenseful mood using key details, especially in the scenes of describing the carnival and going down into the crypt. To start the story, Poe stated, “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season…” hinting and making readers suspect that something sneaky might happen soon. The key details that bring that conclusion are descriptive words Poe used. For example, the words dusk and madness show readers that the scene is spooky, scary, and dark, a perfect place for evil pranks or murder. At another point in the story Montresor acknowledges the attendants at his house, telling them not to worry or look for him because he would not be back until morning, foretelling

The theme of revenge can be backed up by a few literary devices in particular. These devices include: imagery, narrative point of view, irony, and foreshadowing. Irony is arguably the most important literary device used, as it contributes to a majority of the scenes in this short story. "
In contemporary short stories, protagonist’s tragic demises are often derived within their own self-destruct. Such occurrence are clearly developed in Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The Cask of Amontillado,” in which a wealthy aristocrat falls victim to his fine taste of wine. Poe continues this theme in his work “The Black Cat,” by depicting a protagonist failing to realize the significance of his wrongdoings. By articulating characters with rather narrow mindsets, authors show the vulnerability of ignorance. Perhaps the greatest example is Jack London’s masterpiece, “To Build a Fire,” in which a protagonist a journey leagues above his capabilities. Perpetuating detrimental hubris, protagonist’s tragic flaws are exploited through the boastful conoseighership of wine, through the contempt satisfaction of crime, and through the unwillingness to listen to elders.
Edgar Allen Poe is an author who does not allow the readers to feel completely convinced of the main character’s peace of mind in their own revenge, rage, or depression. Through the use of symbolism throughout the story subtle indications are dropped that suggest otherwise. Many stories written by Edgar Allen Poe contain many symbols that refer to death and tragedy (FIND A CITE). It is suggested that the symbols used in his stories are reflections of tragedies of the same standard in his life. Though many like to think there is a strong back story for his use of symbols they tend to be used mostly to as a reinforcement of the mood or the motives for the characters actions.

Edgar Allan Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” is a grim masterpiece. In this work Edgar Allan Poe tells the story of Montresor and how he achieves revenge towards Fortunato. The use of first person narration in this story allows the audience to gain a better understanding of Montresor’s personality as the story unfolds. From reading and analyzing this story I have found that the main character Montresor is extremely intellectual, emotionally static or numb, and lastly he is unremorseful. With literature it can be difficult for the reader to try and think of which characteristics belong to which character. However, in movies there is a visual aspect. This allows the audience to take in what they see, and piece together the traits for each character. “Rear Window” by Alfred Hitchcock is a movie about a character named L.B Jeffries whose leg is in a cast, which enables him to leave his apartment. Without much to do Jeffries finds himself spying on his neighbors, and solving a murder case. Jeffries is a man of average intelligence, empathy, and he is just and fair. This essay will describe and analyze two men, Montresor and L.B Jeffries, who share a similar characteristic trait but are on two different ends of the spectrum. Although these two men share this common trait, the differences in their emotional and moral traits makes them do this differently from one another. These behaviors are what ultimately make them contrasting characters. While one man uses his intelligence to solve a
