How Does Organized Crime Use Prostitution?

There are several different businesses that organized crime is commonly involved with. You have businesses ranging from pornography, prostitution, drug trafficking, gambling, counterfeiting consumer goods, and loan-sharking. For the purpose of this paper, we will take a look at how organized crime uses prostitution. There are several different types of prostitution that could be used. These types are; streetwalkers, massage parlor prostitutes, stag party girls, hotel and convention prostitutes, bar girls, escort service prostitutes, pimp-prostitutes relationship, and human trafficking and sexual slavery (Lyman & Potter, 2015 p.143-146). Organized crime is more likely to be involved with higher levels of prostitution. So it makes sense that you would find organized crime involved in massage parlors because they provide sexual services. The owners of these facilities ‘pretend’ not to know about the illegal activities that are going on. The massage parlor prostitute works from the street, doesn’t have solicit customers, and have a degree of protection from the owners (Lyman & Potter, 2015 p. 143). The way they make it seem like a legitimate business is by, operating out of commercial spaces and paying rent to legitimate landlords, obtaining business licenses/permits, offering actually legal services, among other things (Polaris Project, 2011). Customers have to pay a house fee (between $50-$100), which gets them an hour session for commercial sex. The way they avoid the ‘paying for sex’ thing is that a customer will often leave the money on a table afterwards to make it seem like the money is for a tip (Polaris Project, 2011).
