The Great Gatsby, an American classic, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was a book full of romance, action, adultery, and best of all murder. Some of the main characters are Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s aggressive and lying husband, Daisy Buchanan, Tom’s wife who is nice to everyone and self centered, and Jay Gatsby, the man obsessed with fulfilling his American Dream, which includes the possession of Daisy. Over the course of the novel, Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby, despite their experiences, show no evidence of their personalities evolving into something else until after the turning point, when Gatsby and Mrs. Buchanan get into the accident that cataclysmically ended Tom’s girlfriend's life.

Nick travels to see Daisy and learns a lot about Daisy and Tom’s relationship. At one of Gatsby’s elegant parties, Gatsby asks Nick to arrange a tea party with Daisy and then he will happen to come by. The two rekindle their love for each other and then decide to travel into town. In town Tom confronts Gatsby on his illegal fortune and causes tension. Daisy is angry and will not let Gatsby explain so the two drive back to West Egg where Myrtle happens to be running out into the street. When Tom passes through with Nick and Jordan, Tom finds that Myrtle has been killed. He is saddened and talks to George Wilson, Myrtle’s husband. George is very angry and out to kill whomever killed his Myrtle. Tom blames Gatsby for running over Myrtle and therefore finds and kills Gatsby at his mansion. In F. Gatsby attempts an unachievable goal which is winning Daisy’s love back through money and power, even though Daisy is married to Tom. He desired to win her love by being prosperous, but he became wealthy by committing crimes. But what keeps him different, as Nick Carraway thinks, is that he is naive, self-importance, and passionate yet ludicrous. “Gatsby has "something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life" , and "an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person" , but Tom has a hard mouth and supercilious manner, two shining arrogant eyes, and a cruel body.” As compared to Tom, Daisy’s husband, Gatsby isn’t all that great of a person. He had one objective and did anything he could to reach that; Tom was naturally prosperous and got his way with no trouble.

The Great Gatsby is a movie set in the 1920’s. The main character Nick Carraway lives next to the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Throughout the movie you experience the roaring 20’s first hand. They take you to the lavish countryside, through the struggling “valley of ashes”, into the bustling cites, and down into the bootlegging speakeasies. Gatsby is a secretive man and no one knows the truth about him. By the end of the film you find out his past and his secrets are revealed to us by Nick. Nick was like Gatsby’s best friend through the film. Nick was like a middle man between Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy Buchanan was a woman who lived, with her husband Tom, across the bay from Gatsby. Tom had been sleeping around behind Daisy’s back and nick was the only one who knew who it was although everyone suspected he was. Although there are many characters to follow the main one was Gatsby his life was the main purpose of the film.

The novel The Great Gatsby is an interesting tale of two cities really. Nick Carraway; the narrator, represents all that is good an wholesome in the great midwest. He is a well-educated man who aspires to be a bond broker. His character is conflicted internally and externally throughout the novel but really culminates into a loathing for all things eastern. Carraway’s farmboy charm and doe-eyed innocence is put to the test when he meets The Great Jay Gatsby. Gatsby represents all things Nick is unfamiliar with and is curious about. Nick, being from the midwest, has no real street smarts so when he meets the “wicked” east, his lack of experience is proof positive that he really does not belong

Ernest Hemmingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” is narrated in an omniscient third-person point of view. Hemingway’s minimalistic style doesn’t discuss many characters in the story, but rather focuses on their engagements and discourse. The narrator in this story gives little to no insight into what is happening. However, with this style of writing, Hemingway is able to present many themes that are apparent throughout the short story.  One of the themes I have chosen to focus on is alcohol.  Alcohol is highlighted throughout the two-character’s serious discussion. The conversation is full of tension regarding the operation that the man wants the girl to undergo.  With all this tension, the alcohol seems to act as a distraction or escape

No, I’m not talking about a disease such as the bubonic plague, measles, and tuberculosis but about the death penalty.
