How Does Lee Show Scout Being Courageous

Courage is shown within the characters of To Kill A Mockingbird in several situations.  The characters are challenged to face danger or pain without fear.  The courage they display gives them strength and deepens their self-understanding as the novel progresses.

According to Eleanor Roosevelt, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” (Goodreads). Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is represented by Atticus, Scout, and Boo Radley. In the novel, some of the characters learn a lot about courage. The novel takes place in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. Throughout the book, many characters have to find courage.

According to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (Lee, 128) No matter how you define it, Harper Lee definitely portrays the theme of courage in this book. It is one of the most predominant themes and is shown in many of the characters.

In a smaller perspective, Scout had shown courage in many places in the novel. For instance, she showed courage when Atticus had asked Scout not to fight anyone. She was being asked to change how she reacted negatively to people’s comments. This showed a lot of bravery because Scout used to fight a lot, but since she promised Atticus that she wouldn’t fight anymore she stuck to her word because she didn’t want to disappoint Atticus. Another example is when she continues to learn how to read and write with Atticus even if she gets scolded by her teacher. She shows courage because she is going against what her teacher had told her. Finally, she acts like an ambassador on the first day of school. She has the guts to act like someone really important. Being a follower of her fathers’ character traits, she hasn’t learned the true meaning of courage that her father, Atticus displays.

Scout displayed courage in many sections of the novel. For instance, she portrayed the trait of courage when Atticus had asked Scout not to fight anyone and when she was being asked to change how she reacted negatively to people’s comments. This showed scads of bravery in the book Scout used to fight a lot, but since she made a promise to Atticus, she had changed because she didn’t want to disappoint Atticus. “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away” (Lee, 76). Finally, she showed courage when she continues to learn how to read and write with Atticus even when the teacher scolds her. Bravery is shown as she goes against what her teacher had told her. Scout can inspire many who strive for the trait of bravery, as it is a key trait in today’s society.

Courage is not the only main theme displayed in To Kill a Mockingbird; prejudice and education are also very important themes exhibited throughout the progression of the novel. Through the eyes of Scout Finch, a bright, sensitive and intelligent little girl, these themes of the novel are explored in great depth.

Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and bravery. This idea of courage is a prominent theme in Harper Lee’s in To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel deals with two children- -Jem and Scout-- coming of age in a racist environment. Their father Atticus defends a local African American. All characters learn lessons about courage and racism. In this in mind, it is important to examine how courage is examined through the characters of Jem, Atticus, Boo.
