In "Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes, Roger behaved in a rebellious, vulgar, and desperate way while he spent time on the streets until Mrs.Jones’s beliefs in his potential caused him to be obedient and eager to prove his trustworthiness. To demonstrate, "It was about eleven o'clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse" (Hughes 3-4). This quote displayed Roger’s ignorant actions since he had bad intentions of nearly robbing Ms.Jones’s belongings. However, it is then stated, “ ‘Do you need somebody to go to the store,’ asked the boy, ‘maybe to get some milk or something?’ “ (Hughes 96). This quote depicted how Roger wanted to illustrate to Mrs. Jones that he could have completed
Indirect characterization is the most successful method when developing a character because it creates an image in the reader’s mind, in which the author allows the reader to think and create a picture in the readers mind. The author creates a more interesting and vivid picture in the readers mind in which it can help contribute to the development of the theme. For instance, in the short story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Hughes presents Mrs.Jones as caring, helpful, courageous, and more. The author shows this by Mrs.Jones actions, speech, thoughts, looks and her effects on others. In this short story it states, “Now here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.”
In the story of “Thank You M’am", Roger tries to steal from Mrs. Jones. “... when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.” Mrs. Jones then took Roger back to her home, where Roger learned about the power of love and trust. Also, Roger had a chance to escape when he was at Mrs. Jones’ apartment. “The door was open … he could run, run, run, run, run!”
The use of character foil in “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes reveals how Mrs. Jones shows herself through Roger. Mrs. Jones and Rogers contrast with one another ends up allowing Roger to bring out the best in himself. The story begins with Mrs. Jones not punishing Roger for trying to steal her purse but acting compassionate and helpful to Roger. The large woman, Mrs. Jones brings Roger back to her home and lets him wash his face and he asks ¨You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink. ¨Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,¨ said the woman.¨ (pg.2) Mrs. Jones shows the quality of being kind to the boy who tried to snatch her pocketbook, which reveals that she is a good person. Mrs. Jones showed her personality
after reading reviews from him thank you ma'am I have came up with a few similarities and one difference one somewhere or is that the setting in another is the characters change of heart the differences how the short stories end
Experience involves engaging with people, activities, and events both familiar and unfamiliar to the child or character. Experience teaches the lesson of how a person could react in a similar situation later in life. In “Thank You M’am”, Roger’s experience gives him a strong life lesson and he benefits from it. He goes up to a woman named Mrs. Jones and tries to steal her purse for some money. Because he is poor, and because he wants to buy blue suede shoes that Elvis brought into the generation, so that he can fit in with all the kids in his town, he makes a desperate choice to attempt to steal a purse from a character named Mrs. Jones.
According to the story Mrs. Jones impact on Roger will most likely make him change a lot because in the story it states that he doesn’t have anyone at home to take care of him. But since Jones had the kindness in her heart to take him in and feed him then make him clean himself up she played a huge role when she did that because his parents aren’t around to make him do things like that. After that she had gave him the money to buy the shoes he wanted so now all these beautiful old ladies don’t have to worry about getting there purse snatch because Roger became a gentleman and now knows he have to ask for things instead of taking. Basically Mrs. Jones raised him to become a man in less than 3 hours in the story it stated that Mrs. Jones told
The story Thank You, Ma'am by Langston Hughes uses situational irony in order to convey the message of people to always treat people with Dignity which grants them freedom. Situational irony is created when an author leads the reader to expect a different outcome based on the action within a situation than what actually happens. In this story the boy was tugging on an old woman's purse trying to steal something. However, he was caught and the lady was nice enough to take the boy into her home. She taught him manners, fed him, and told him to wash his face.
Langston Hughes’ coming of age story “ Thank you Ma’am” takes place in a town where a boy is struggling for money. This boy’s name is Roger. Roger thinks he needs money so much that he decides to try and rob that money from a lady’s big and heavy purse . Roger instead falls down and gets caught by the lady. One lesson in this story is sympathy because if someone is in a bad situation that another person can relate to then that person would want to help.
In the story, Roger attempts to steal a pocketbook from Mrs. Jones, according to page 78. “It was eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse… But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance.” Later in the story, we find the boy thanking the woman for taking him to her house and teaching him a lesson, as said on page 79. “The boy wanted to say something other than, ‘Thank you, m’am,” to Mrs. Jones, but he couldn’t do so a he turned at the barren stoop and looked back at the large woman in the door.”
When is a risk worth taking? That is the question we ask to figure out the central idea of progress. In the three stories, “Thank You, M’am,” by Langston Hughes, “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” by Doreen Rappaport, and “NFL is cracking down hard on illegal celebrations” by Mark Maske all show answers to, when is a risk worth taking. They all have different answers but they use the same question to show the progress.
I think that Mrs. Jones takes Roger to her home, because her childhood must’ve not been that great, and she wanted Roger to become a good person. In other words, she must have done some terrifying stuff during her childhood, and she doesn't want Roger, or any other kids to come up like her. She wants others to be well-behaved. Firstly, that shows how Mrs. Jones did some awful things when she was young was when it said, ¨ ¨I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.¨ There was another long pause.
At the beginning of “Thank you, Ma’am,” we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The moment she meets Roger, she tells the boy to wash his face. “Least I can do is wash your face. Are you hungry?” This might not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however, she doesn’t even know the boy, yet she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then, she takes the boy inside of her house! In addition, the boy, Roger asks, “You going to take me to jail?” But Mrs. Jones doesn’t. Maybe she sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows compassion to bring out his true kindness. This makes me think that he was probably trying to steal because he had to. And when Mrs. Jones asked him if he had anyone at home, he said, “No’m.” Mrs.
Painter, Camille Pisscaro once said “ Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where others see nothing.” There are many types of people in this world, for example some people see their glass as half empty while others see their glass as half full. But the way you look at the world doesn’t define you as a person. Rather, as illustrated by Roger, the way you look and act in a situation really defines a person’s best qualities. In the story " Thank you M'am" by Langston Hughes, the character of Roger shows he is a good kid through his polite and thankful demeanor.
Trust is one of many components of life and it is shown through our actions and how we carry ourselves. We as human beings learn to trust each other by the words we say to one another and the actions we show to others. There are many lessons we can learn through the short but powerful story by Langston Hughes “Thank You. Ma’am”. Throughout the story there are several lessons and traits that the reader can interpret such as thinking twice before you execute the plan that you had in mind, sympathy, charisma, and even giving second chances. But more importantly, there is one lesson that specifically plays a huge role in the story itself and in American culture today, and that is trust others. There are several ways these lessons and interpretations can be put into real life situations and how they can affect us today in real time.
What would you do if you caught the person who tried to rob you. In the book Thank You Ma'am written by Langston Hughes that is what happened. I feel like Rodger changed because when she caught him she treated him with kindness. If she would have been cruel and mean he would not have changed I think. You can tell she changed him when he decides not to run away and face what he has done. When she pulls back on her purse Roger falls to the ground. When he does Mrs. Jones picks him up and puts him in a half nelson. She takes him to her house where she tells him to clean his face. He stared at the door thinking if he could run out the door, but he did as she said and washed his face. He asked if she needed anything from
