How Does King Use Ethos Pathos Logos In Letter From Birmingham Jail

Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963 wrote “Letter From Birmingham Jail” in largely in response to “Public Statement By Eight Clergymen” and the rising racial tension in the United States. In the letter, Dr. King addresses many of the arguments made against his civil rights protests and the timeliness of his actions. Dr. King illustrates his points by using pathos of the audience describing horrific and solemn scenes caused by segregation. He also supports his points using ethos quoting the bible, activists, and philosophers. Dr. king also uses logos making logical conclusions and arguments that defend his actions.
Dr. King in “Letter From Birmingham Jail” makes many of his points against holding off on protests by appealing to the reader's emotions. This is most pronounced in paragraph twelve of the paper when he recounts many terrible effects that racism has had on the …show more content…

King along with ethos and pathos uses logos, logical reasoning and facts to supports his arguments. Dr. king defended his presence in Birmingham largely with logos saying “I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here I am here because I have organizational ties here. But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here.” (king 1), he also supports further by eventually stating the fact that “Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation” (King 1). He also defends many of his actions using logos saying that there are four basic steps in a nonviolent campaign; identifying injustices, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action. He goes on to explain that the facts show of injustices and they have made attempts at negotiation but was refused leaving the only thing left to do is direct
