In the time of war survival is very important. In the novel Tomorrow When The War Began, John Marsden shows how this is displayed by many changes that each character faces. The war has impacted each character in a different way. Homer learns that survival is very important by presenting responsibility, while Robyn brings out her courage as part of survival and Ellie changes from innocent to an extent where she feels as if she is guilty. When Wirrawee is invaded, Homer changes from an irresponsible person to a leader. At the beginning of the novel Ellie describes Homer as “Wild and outrageous, he didn’t care or what people thought.” As Homer develops changes, he is a character that is reliable and a becomes a main leader, “It’s hard to think
The characters in the novel Tomorrow When the War Began (TWTWB) (1993) begin as very human, very believable and, very ordinary. Then their lives are changed in an instant and they are forced to respond, to change, to grow and to adapt.. The characterisation is so well done that Ellie, Robyn, Fi, Homer, Chris, Corrie, Kevin and Lee become real to the reader, and you find yourself relating to them as you would actual people. Author John Marsden creates characters based on Australia’s unique multicultural society in TWTWB. The novel is based on an Australian town where John Marsden uses stereotypes as the main characters. They start out as fairly stereotypical examples of teenagers, but they undergo a character metamorphosis as the story progresses. Characters such as Homer, first introduced as a very stereotypical law-breaking teenager often seen in todays society, undergoes a transformation into a strong leader as the story develops.
If Tim O’Brien does not change something in his characters he will not make a good point on war’s effect on peoples’ life. For example, also if Mary Anne Bell and if Timmy does not change the reader will not learn something from that chapter because that in the novel Tim O’Brien was trying to send the reader message about how war and a loved person death can change and effect people in a horrible way. If a person fights in war he or she usually change in a negative way and in the novel Tim O’Brien mostly focuses on the negative change caused from war but he also talks about positive changes like when he makes friends. The theme of change always takes a huge role in many novels, T.V shows and
One his outings with his friends, Homer they drink, play cards or fight; his mind does not seem to be on Evonne or their coming child. After receiving a letter from home, Homer reminisces about his family. His home and family are located in a rural area, where it is peaceful, unlike the city in which he lives now. His parents are relaxing; the children are playing as opposed to his present surroundings
The novel, Tomorrow When the War Began, by John Marsden, tells the story of a brave group of unlikely heroes who journey out to camp in ‘Hell’. Throughout this novel, the characters are able to change the way they act, feel and treat others. This opens up new, stronger relationships in the group, and creates an unbreakable bond between certain characters.
Homer was forced to change the way he handled every situation and his attitude towards everything because of the live event of war. He became the leader of the group when people looked to him for guidance as they relied on him. We see the kind of character Homer was before the war when Ellie is describing all the characters going to Hell. She used spoken thought when she says “Homer was Wild, Outrageous, He didn’t care what he did or what anyone thought”. This gives the reader an insight into how homer was barbaric and confident. Homer developed as a character because his friends relied on him. They needed him to make plans and decisions on how to save lee, one of their friends, and avoid the soldiers. Ellie notices these changes uses the technique of spoken thought when she says “Homer was fast becoming the teachers he despised”. This tells the reader that Homer was becoming organised, he was becoming the advisor, someone that helped everybody which is a big change from his old reckless ways. This is like teenagers in society as they become more mature through the life events they experience. Most teenagers need to change and become more mature as they need to grow up because they need to get a job, meet someone and move on in life. This is learnt from the experiences they have and the events that occur. As we grow older we mature at depending on the circumstances. Just like Homer,
The author once again uses direct speech to tell the story, but this time he is also doing something which is rarely done in novels based on war. Marsden is showing the pro’s in war, he is moving away from the stereotypical storylines and showing how war can change people for the better. We as readers are being challenged as we don't want to believe war is a good thing or at least partially a good thing. Even if it's for something as small as one person becoming a better person then they were before. Homer was fighting a war but at the same time slowly winning a new
Homer essentially became one of the first Greek poets. He wrote down and perfected a story he had probably told and heard a hundred times and made it in to a poetry by writing an epic. This epic was something the Greeks idolized and proceeded to teach in schools because it was a masterpiece. All the children in the schools got the constant reinforcement of how they were supposed to act by not only the people around them, but also the books they read and the books that were read to them.
Homer shows the reader that he overcomes his challenge and stand up for himself and the others Safety and Survival. Another Challenge Homer has faced was Love. An example homer shows this challenge was when he was asked a question from Ellie about feelings for Fi and homer told the truth and emitted he had feelings for Fi but didn't know how to show it. “Homer was still rapt in Fi, always wanting to talk to me about her, trying to accidentally put himself wherever she happened to be going, turning red every time she spoke to him.”
Homer’s difference from the other characters is the most vivid when the illusion fractures. Rather than feelings anger or hatred, instead he becomes stoic before finally breaking down into tears. This difference can be marked by the fact that Homer never completely disengages from his emotions, therefore, rage is not the next only emotion he is able to feel. Instead, he feels grief and all of his pain (which seems to have been lying dormant in the rest of his body) awaken the rest of his body, bringing all of him into reality. Consequently, Homer not only has to leave his fantasy, but he feels the need to leave the entire state and return home to where he can be completely free of the constant performing that he is surrounded by.

Ellie, from Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden, is a typical country girl who likes the rural way of life. She is the narrator in the book, which suggests she has a lot to say. She starts out as a stubborn, headstrong person who is very loyal to her friends and family. While she still has a determined and reliable character, Ellie’s character has further developed. She steps up to whatever is required of her in the dangerous situations she and the group find themselves in. During the novel, we see her character grow because of her situation and experiences.
At first, Homer's control over himself seems strong; he is only mildly aware of tempting situations. The reader begins to notice, however, that Homer's mind is still easily swayed by that most
Knowing that the novel Tomorrow When The War Began had two main themes, there are also some motifs that have been mentioned quite often in the novel. The one main motif that was identified is the campsite ‘Hell’. Hell is the one place that kept them from knowing about the war, and it is the one place that was the reason they were safe and not locked up in the showground like the rest of their families are. In the novel, it has been represented as a safe, comfortable home to all of them as it is a symbol for the seven teenagers’ safety, where they are able to go back and stay hidden in a place in which they know no one has been there since they left their trip. It is also a place that they can always return to in regards of safety and comfort
