The weather in a story is vital to setting the atmosphere for a specific scene. The changes
in weather change not only the atmosphere of a scene but the mood as well. The power the
author has by being able to control the weather is a potent tool for radiating the progression of a
storyline. Throughout the Harry Potter series, the weather plays an indispensable role as the story
progresses to a new chapter. The weather has a constant overlay effect that shades the reader
towards a specific emotion or set of feelings. The dark stormy nights provide the reader with the
sense of an ominous presence which leads to suspense.

because it displayed that though the trial was over and resolved, someone still felt angered and
the need to shoot Tom, resulting in unease among the people in town as they felt threatened and
unsafe. An example of the second type of violence is in the novel, New Moon, where Harry
Clearwater dies from a heart attack. His death shows no significance to the story, it’s just a way
for Stephanie Meyer to advance the plot. An example of the second type of violence can be
found in the novel Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. In the novel, Stein develops and intensely
intimate relationship between the main character and his dog, eventually the dog dies leaving his
owner shattered. Yet the death of the dog was only to advance the story towards the main
character eventually achieving his goals.

This everlasting battle allows for the development of Christ figures in modern
literary works. A Christ figure is present in Glory, a movie based on the life of a slave during the
civil war. A character who is a slave eventually grows sick and tired of the abuse he and his
fellow men endure; he then challenges the white man’s authority and is punished. He is put to
punishment by whip in the center of town with the community as an audience. The officer make
and example of him as he is put through agonizing pain as his flesh is continuously torn with
every swing of the thick leather whip. The character is eventually pitied and released after his
entire back is torn to shreds; he is received by the slave community and nursed to health. He is
shunned for challenging authority by his fellow men, but eventually is the inspiration for the
entire community to challenge authority in hope for change. The entire community comes
together in hopes to break current social norms which banned the black man from the army.
Chapter 15: Flights of Fancy
The movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is great example of a meaningful flight.
with that "somebody" being the author (Foster 95). This reveals an important element of violence in literature, because it shows how violence, unlike other elements of a story, connects the internal events of the story to the story itself and ultimately the reader and author. When reading literature one of the goals is to understand the story beyond its literal meaning, and this
There are two categories of violence in literature: the specific injury and the narrative violence. Specific injury causes characters to visit on one another or on themselves. Narrative violence cause the characters to cause harm in general.
Stories need setting it’s essential and you could say that weather is apart of it.
In Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, numerous references are made to different conditions of weather. Even the title of the novel suggests the storminess present in nearly the entire book. The often-changing weather serves to signify the characters’ personalities, as well as the changes that they go through during the course of their lives.
Another example of violence transpiring for more than a sole purpose, is through the character of Jonathan Harker. Jonathan is struggling with an inner conflict, and one of the supernatural; man versus himself and man versus the supernatural. His inner conflict is due to the fact that in his mind, he is a prisoner in Castle Dracula, and there are no means of escape. Therefore, the struggle within himself is one of keeping his sanity and rational way of thinking, since he is such a rational, business-minded man. However, the most obvious conflict derives from the physical and mental struggle with Count Dracula. The novel sets a tone of good versus evil or the supernatural, which is directly related to the conflict. Accordingly, on June 29, the Count tells Jonathan that this is his last day when he stated, "To-morrow, my friend, we must part"(pg.51). After the Count led him to the door where the wolves were howling, he
This time I will be talking about the tone. The overall tone is supposed to be ominous as shown by the storm mainly. Generally a stormy background is supposed to cause the image in the reader's head that it is gloomy and scary. It almost is there like you can’t see what is happening, like anything could sneak up on you. In a storm you can’t hear what is creeping up you cause the sound of the rain covers it and you never know
Weather is used in every piece of literature to give the writing a since of tone. Rain typically represents a drowsy, sad and mellow atmosphere, while heat brings out the frustration between characters. In The Great Gatsby weather is used in these general terms, but has two very important details that the average reader often overlooks. The two types of weather, heat and rain, are brought to life and acts as a mask to hide the true feeling of the characters. In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald uses weather as a symbol of the revelation of truth that Daisy and Gatsby come to on their own.
Julius Caesar and The Great Gatsby both utilizes the changes in weather in the narrative to symbolize the moments that were happen. In Julius Caesar a storm happens with “Thunder and lightning” and “scolding winds” this is used to represent the status of Rome at the moment . however it’s also used to create the mood, foreshadowing the death of Caesar, making it storm on the day he will die (Shakespeare). This is similar to The Great
Often times, violence is prevalent in literature. It is captivating, it enhances the plot, and it creates feelings of suspense and tension within the reader. However, in well-crafted works of literature, scenes of violence serve an even greater purpose. Violence is frequently used in order to contribute to the meaning of the complete work, and Ernest Hemingway utilizes violence in order to highlight the meaning in The Sun Also Rises. In the novel, Robert Cohn verbally attacks protagonist Jake Barnes and his friend Mike Campbell after questions arise pertaining to the whereabouts of widely-coveted Lady Brett Ashley. Jake then strikes Cohn, and a fistfight between the three men ensues. Hemingway utilizes the violence between the men in order
Chapter ten of How to Read Literature Like a Professor explains the important role weather plays on literature. For instance, snow is not just snow in a novel. It symbolizes so much more in both positive and negative ways; it is stark, filthy, playful, and clean, and you can do just about anything with it. In “The Dead,” Joyce breaks his main character down until he can look out at the snow, which is “general all over Ireland,” and then the reader realizes snow is like death. It paints the image that “upon all the living are the dead.”
When it comes to literature, weather can be used in many different ways. It can symbolize theme, set the mood of the story, and even affect the plot. In Tangerine by Edward Bloor, the weather acts as a plot device and as a symbol.
Weather, in the form of wind, thunder and lightning, and mist, provides powerful symbolism for the conflicts in Tony's life.
Weather is a symbol that is in many pieces fro all different genres whith different symbolic menings. The symbolism that f. Asott Fitzgerold was udsed in the novel The great gastby describes change in everything. There are 4 seasn with each unique weather that symbolizes time and the societys change. Weather in The Great Gatsby symbolizes everything and evryonee. Fitzgerad uses the
The weather does more than fit the scene’s energy; often, the weather mirrors the protagonist’s attitudes and feelings, helping readers sympathize and connect with the characters. The first several chapters, set at Gateshead, are rainy, cold, and dreary, paralleling Eyre’s hopeless outlook. According to Thomas Foster, one of rain’s several potential purposes in a novel is to add an air of mystery, isolation, and misery. For example, when Jane is locked in the red-room, “the beclouded afternoon was tending to drear twilight...the rain
Foster’s insights about seasons and weather in literature change the story’s interpretation by clarifying their purposes. Foster’s main idea in the chapter It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow is weather always has a purpose; for example, rain, which has an “association with Spring,” can allow a “character to be cleansed symbolically” and “can bring the world back to life.” This insight is clear in the short story as outside Mrs.Mallard’s room the “trees were all aquiver with the new spring life” and “the delicious breath of rain was in the air.” The rain and spring weather may be dismissed as merely setting, but Foster’s insights allow the deeper meaning behind the inclusion of rain and spring to be clarified. The rain and spring show how Mrs.Mallard was cleansed
