Gun Violence Impacts on America As the ongoing debate of gun control seems to be never getting any change or differences made, America is persistent to getting these changes. People are speaking out against gun violence in America and making an action plan. After many tragedies from gun violence, they are ready for changes to be made. The media has very back and forth views on gun control. Gun violence has affected the media in America by showing harsh realities, hidden truths, and sad stories.
Although many people argue that there are not enough gun control laws, there are many restrictions. In 1968, the Gun Control Act was put into place to ensure that anyone who wants to purchase a firearm

Firearms other than those including handguns can only be purchased by people over the age of 21. Holders must conduct a background check because of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993. “The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence estimates that around 114,994 people are shot each year in the U.S. This includes murders, assaults, accidents, police intervention, suicide attempts and suicides”(Deutsche). This shows why all these restrictions were put into place. People that have been involuntarily placed in mental institutions, people that have been deemed a danger, and fugitives are not allowed to purchase firearms. This also includes people with misdemeanor charges, with a sentence more than two years, and people that have prior felonies with a sentence of over one year. People that have been found guilty of possession or using controlled substances within the past year cannot purchase guns due to the federal law that blocks the sale. Violence in the media could easily be watched and protected by the state agencies. It would be easy to regulate firearms and take action against violent crimes if they were causing harm in society (Elson). After the shooting in Parkland, Florida, the head of the National Rifle Association, Wayne Lapierre accused the mainstream media and gun control advocates of using the tragedy to push their agenda (Chang). People are fearing for their safety, they argue, “that restricting the right to bear arms would leave citizens unable to protect themselves in their daily lives or, in a worst-case scenario, from a government turned against the people” (Deutsche). The media has negative effects on gun violence and gun control in
Taya Kyle, the author of the article “American Sniper Widow: Gun Control Won’t Protect Us”, believes that there are two sides of the argument on gun control. People can use statistics, facts, and real life examples to argue that there should be stricter control of guns in the US, but they cannot eliminate the emotional side of the story. While in the last two decades, violent crime rates have actually been reduced in the US, fears have gone up. Anyone can be a victim of a violent crime because if another person decides to do harm, they will do it under any circumstances.
The article “Will recent shooting influence gun legislation” takes about how the recent shootings are having an influence on people's perspective on gun control. It explains the various mass shootings across America such as the one at Charleston. Some people are deciding to go out and buy more guns, while others are trying to enforce more gun control laws. The American people are split down the middle, deciding whether they should protect gun rights or attack then. The article tackles varying concepts, such as mental health with guns and the use of assault rifles. It shows how gun violence has escalated in the past few years, and how the American people are reacting to it. Overall, it is about
For many years, people have been pushing the American government to implement new laws that deal with gun control. Supporters of the argument claim that increased gun control will drastically reduce the crime rate in America. Nevertheless, a majority of gun control arguments are formed from strict control of data and emotional appeal. The mainstream media picks up these stories and broadcasts them to viewers without providing any context to them. While gun control activists assert that gun control is necessary, the American government should not ban guns because of the following reasons: potential vulnerability of innocent people being shot at by criminals and the inability for people to defend themselves against their own government.
Gun control has recently brought a massive uproar to the United States after several tragedies combined mass murder with firearms. Some argue that guns are meant to be used for our protection and it takes someone to pull the trigger while others believe that guns are intended to cause serious harm or death to the intended target. The right to own a firearm stems from the second amendment of the constitution and states that a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed. The first piece of gun control legislature that was passed in the United States was in 1911 when Sullivan’s Law passed to make buying or carrying a handgun without a permit a felony
The future of America is based off the choices of my generation and the generations after. I feel that a domestic policy issue that could have a strong impact on my generation’s future is gun control because we take advantage of guns and treat them like toys. Gun violence is at an all-time high and regulating gun usage could make my peers make better choices regarding guns, which could possibly decrease the amount of deaths due to gun violence.
Gun Violence is a major problem in the United States, it leads to a lot of deaths every day. The area of focus is the United States of America. More controls need to be put on guns to make America a safer nation. More than 30,000 people are killed each year in this country due to guns. There are some questions that haven’t been answered like, Amendments that need to be made to reduce the availability of guns. At the point when American threats with Britain began on April 19, 1775, the Continental Congress had no standing armed force, no stores of weapons and munitions, no naval force, and no navy ships. The Continental Congress revitalized volunteers to join the battle against the British. Farmers and tradesmen conveying their own black powder guns framed a volunteer army along the street from Boston to Concord, Massachusetts, discharged the first shot of the Revolution, and battled again on Bunker Hill in Charlestown on June 17. As a result, the Constitution of the United States was embraced in 1787 on the condition that a Bill of Rights would be included. The initial Ten Amendments to the Constitution, including the Second Amendment, were sanctioned by Congress on December 15, 1791. The Second Amendment states: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The historical backdrop of
The Gun Control Act of 1968 is a federal law that basically regulates the gun industry. The purpose of this federal firearms regulation is to assist Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the ongoing effort to reduce crime and violence ("Gun Control Overview"). The Gun Control Act of 1968 was amended by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. In this
The authors accuse the fear to make it pro-gun. This is not freedom. The authors also criticize the media by encouraging fear. The article claims that the communities most affected by violence approve the control of the guns, and the areas least affected by violence often celebrated the guns as emblematic of freedom.
To help apply restrictions, the Gun Control Act of 1968, which was the first gun law, was passed in the wake of the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy earlier that year (“Restricting” par. 4). The 1968 Gun Control Act established categories of prohibited gun purchasers and possessors, including convicted felons, fugitives from justice, minors, individuals with a history of
Over the past 20 years, a culmination of events has caused quite a stir in the United States. These events, which consist mostly of homicide on a mass scale, have caused a massive debate over our second amendment rights. Some people feel as if citizens’ rights pertaining to firearms need to be redefined to cater to the growing variety of weapons; while others feel as if such changes would infringe upon their rights as a citizen of the United States. While many people have a very strong opinion pertaining to the gun debate, others do not; the media plays a big role in influencing the undecided audience to one side or the other. When journalists discuss the gun debate, they use a wide variety of rhetorical devices to communicate their perspectives. The most common of these devices includes statistics, the subject of safety, persuasive language, and tone.
Gun control is an extremely controversial issue in the United States, and the debates around this topic has started many decades ago. According to the article “Gun Rights vs. Gun control” by Brianna Gurciullo, these debates are fueled by the people who defend the gun rights and the people who advocate in favor of gun control. It has been difficult to prove that gun ownership is directly related to an increase in violence due to the fact that researches tend to disagree on the impact of gun ownership in the American society. These debates tend to be brought to the spotlight whenever there is a mass shooting in the United States, which according to Abbey Oldham, who is a reporter from the PBS News Hour, happens quite frequently. However, organizations, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), defend that the laws for gun control violate the Second Amendment of the constitution, which states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” stated Gurciullo. Due to the distinct interpretations of the constitution and the difficulty to agree on the best approach to tackle the issue, this controversy seem to be almost unsolvable.
d gun regulations is to minimize incidences associated with homicide, mass shooting, and terrorism, besides lowering the likelihood of mentally ill persons and convicted felons acquiring firearms. Over the years, numerous incidences of mass shootings have been witnessed in the United States. These incidences have triggered heated debates on whether tighter gun control measures should be implemented or not. Numerous studies have been carried out to determine the impact of gun control policies in society. This paper conducts a comprehensive review of the study by McGinty, Webster, and Barry (2013), which evaluates the impact of information concerning mass shootings, propagated by the mass media, on support for gun control policy by the public. Additionally, an analysis of other sources containing information on gun control will be carried out.
The high rates of gun violence and accidents in the United States have long aroused public concern, in view of the strong correlation between gun prevalence, many people believe that the United States must adopt stricter gun control measures to reduce the huge number of firearms across the nation. These people are known as gun control proponents, or advocates. However, many other people do not think so. In their eyes, the serious firearm problems do not result from gun prevalence, and many people would say it is not gun’s problem, people are pushing our
A shooting here; a shooting there; an every day occurrence heard in the newspapers and on the news channels on television. New media are reporting a shooting somewhere. Whether the shootings are accidental or intentional; they are happening across the United States. Nevertheless, in today’s society, gun violence is sparking debate and controversy on how to control gun violence. Throughout the country, thousands of laws and regulations have been created to aid in the control of guns. Through much study, the gun laws and regulations in place have very little effect on the number of gun related injuries and deaths. More needs to be done to establish an effective way to control gun violence.
Gun control has been around since firearms were first invented. It is a necessity to ensure safety and that the firearms do not fall into the hands of the wrong types of people who are untrustworthy or incompetent and who cannot practice proper firearm use. There have been laws for all time that determine what types of people can and cannot carry a firearm or weapon. Henry II in the twelfth century restricted the rights to arms
