Graffiti is not only an eye-sore but is also detrimental to the health of those living in the vicinity of the vandalism. Graffiti can have a negative effect on the safety and welfare of a community by promoting a negative perception of that area, leading to the increase in other types of crime. Graffiti in you local area could also directly effect the valuation of your house causing it to fall as graffiti is often a blight on an area. This can lead to an area looking run down and uncared for, reducing the curb appeal and therefore the amount of people who want to move into the area.
Graffiti and more importantly the messages portraying through graffiti can often have some association with local gangs and be used as a means of scaring local
Many people think that adults doing graffiti influences younger kids do it. That's simply not true. A graffiti artist by the name of 'Banksy', who is an unidentified artist in England, says "Imagine a city where graffiti wasn't illegal, a city where everybody could draw whatever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colors and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business." Graffiti is art and art is such a wonderful thing that makes others happy. If someone wants to do something that makes them happy, then people should let them. It's no different than painting or music or even doing makeup. It makes people happy. Being happy shouldn't be
According to Boyd, through Graffiti is essential to understand as a form of art that crosses the boundaries of location, method, and motivation. He acknowledges that graffiti might include “racist remarks, empty slogans and illegal signatures.”(Boyd 251) Boyd’s piece is also very informative because according to the author, there are two methods for creating this form of art: murals and tagging. The most popular one is tagging because it can be found almost everywhere from fence posts to trains, street walls to buses. The main goal of graffiti writers is to put their signature tags in places to be recognized by their
Graffiti has been around for more than half a decade and practiced worldwide. However there is debate between whether it is a form of art or vandalism. Graffiti artists’ debate that many do not understand the reason most graffiti artist take the risk of incarceration, fines, injuries, and in some cases death to paint a wall. A graffiti artist can have the simple desire to become recognized, or to create a piece that speaks to their audience as a form of self expression. Because graffiti is associated with gangs and acts of destruction to some many cannot see the history and importance graffiti can have on a worldwide scale. Due to the fact that graffiti is usually produced illegally, meaning it is
The policy investigated throughout this project concerns graffiti. Graffiti is seen as a negative gesture towards communities as it signals the presence of gang activity and intimidation. The populace believes that graffiti causes neighborhoods to look unclean and disrespected, allowing others to think it is
By definition, graffiti is illegal. It is also considered vandalism because public or private property is intentionally destroyed, but in Alex Boyd’s blog “In Defense of Graffiti”, he clearly conveys his argument about how graffiti shows qualities of value and shouldn’t be criticized on impulse. Even though many people have seen graffiti as something to be condoned, punishable, and terrorizing, it is actually just another form of expression, communication, art, and point of view.
You see it everywhere. You see on buses, on walls, on trains, everywhere. It has made many gawk while others just don’t see a reason to it. Graffiti has many connotations, some good and some bad. It’s the thrill that drives these crazy risk-takers to get their names known. Seeing graffiti through the eyes of an artist who only sees his masterpiece. Graffiti has been here longer then you think. Though you may see destruction of property he only see his art and freedom of expression. Being a graffiti artist is about feeling the rush of a finished masterpiece and not getting caught. Some are the quieter type but are still well-known. It has been here since the 1960s.
The author describes the graffiti vandals’ DVD ‘shocking” in Australia. McRae describes how the affect for graffiti in public place and social and what happens for gang people. The main ideas expressed are why people make graffiti in public place and how gang people make profit selling DVD in the New South Wales. Generally most people look and take graffiti as a form of destruction and wanting to cause violence, but in the artist’s mind they want to be creative and help the people around them by making art to cheer someone up or create a sense of creativity in others. They don’t do it to go to jail or because they want to pay a fine they do it because they are open minded and creative. For instance, “A lot of attention is given to the ‘broken window’ theory, which says that signs of disorder like petty vandalism, fare jumping … and yes, graffiti, open the window to larger crimes,” Verel told The Huffington Post. “But little is paid to the ways graffiti is harnessed for good in a form that’s both constructive and authentic”(Patrick Verel). They are taking this broken windows theory too far and only saying it can cause bigger crimes. Some graffiti artists are trying to uplift the neighborhoods and the people they live around with creative art. Also not all graffiti is bad enough to want artists to commit a crime. While making this art or graffiti I don’t think that these artist are trying to harm the buildings in any way, but they should ask for permission if they aren’t allowed to be painting on these buildings. This is to let the owner of the building know that they mean no harm to the environment or their workplace. For example, “Adam Cooper, cultural strategy officer for the mayor of London, thinks
Just as Hip Hop is a form of art, so is graffiti. It allows individuals to express one’s feelings. Graffiti is one of the main pillars of Hip Hop . Graffiti is used as a way of expressing one’s feelings about what the individual is undergoing. This can be political and social issues such as racial profiling.Graffiti artists use spray paint to create symbolized images or expressions on billboards, subways and building walls. Although this is an obvious form of expression to many people, however to police, it is a form of “vandalism.” Vandalism is an action which leads to destruction or damage to public or private property. According to the Museum of The City, an exhibition written by Greg Eickmer, “Graffiti is generally viewed as
Art has been around ever since the ancient city of Pompeii. The people of Pompeii used graffiti as a way to display their cleverness; from poetry contests to playful recombinations of the letters that form Roman Numerals. In the early ‘70s, graffiti was used as a way for young teens to mark their territory. During that time, many people – especially in New York City – saw graffiti as vandalism and prohibited it. Even though graffiti has been misused in some occasions, as long as the purpose is not to deliberately mischievous or malicious destruction, graffiti is art.
Graffiti is writing or drawings that are scribbled on walls or surfaces. But these drawings or code writings are illegally written or drawn on public properties of not their own. Lots of places that have odd or racist writing on public properties are known to be illegal drawings. A lot of known groups draw specific signs and codes to communicate to others or to claim properties that aren't theirs, to show intimidation and fear to others. Those groups are called gang graffiti. Gang graffiti accede violence to show preeminence of there such called territories. When gangs have indicated their neighborhood, anyone that's not part of their gang will have a higher chance of being attacked. An example occurred on April 6, 2016, fifteen-year-old high school player had a brutal bleeding due to not being in a gang.
Graffiti is a hobby that many people loved to do, but the other half of most people dislike graffiti and want it gone.
Graffiti can be found everywhere and anywhere. It is a way for people to express themselves and be creative in a public manner. It shows how passionate and talented they can be when it comes to drawing or tagging and have it displayed as a piece of art for everyone to see. Graffiti goes way back to the ancient times and is now very well known in the modern days which makes more and more people interested and fascinated by them. It can be used in different types of ways. Many artists can either spray paint, carve, paste, or stencil them on a surface. From how we see them today they are usually images of random cartoons, big bubbly letters, vintage black and whites or inspirational quotes. Virtually anything colorful or not and big that can be easily spotted. Graffiti is more superior to be known as art than vandalism because it is a self expressing act. People need to be open minded about the images they see and look at the message behind it or else they will immediately criticize and say it is vandalizing property.
Graffiti portrays a message whether it’s spelled out on the concrete or hidden behind a sort of code. It lets unheard voices, be heard. There are many different forms of graffiti, tagging is the form of street art that most often results in consequences (Eickmier). This is because tagging is basically signing your nickname on a wall, and once the police figure out your pseudonym they will most likely find you. Graffiti is not always considered to be ugly though, some artists work actually ends up in museums (Wark) A manchester artist who goes by the name “Banksy” ultimately avoided jail because his work was deemed “artistic” He was later given an opportunity to showcase his work in a museum. Graffiti does not
Graffiti has put a major impact on the way people look at their everyday life. It was not used so much here in the United States but was used overseas. Overseas, graffiti, or street art, was used or played as a sport, just like baseball is Americas sport. There are different laws that are put over there than what there are here. They can get away with some of the things that they paint or make over there. If we tried some of that type of work over here, we would get in trouble and possibly serve time for vandalizing someone else’s property. There are many biased outlooks on graffiti, but it should be considered art in all places because of all the time, effort, and design the artist put into their work.
