Throughout the entire book, The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins changes pretty drastically. Even though he does not like to travel, he went through an adventure, introducing a whole new world to him. In the beginning of the book Bilbo was described as someone who enjoys just walking around his peaceful, small little home, with his pipe and his food he loves so much. He would rather have other people come see him and he suggested “ I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not Today. Good morning! But please come to tea – any time you like! Why not tomorrow? Good bye!” (3) . But then Gandalf appears and changes everything. Bilbo ends up gaining bravery, self-confidence, and the loyalty he was lacking.

Throughout chapter five, Bilbo finds himself gaining more bravery, but also more self-confidence. Once Bilbo opened his eyes in the dark cave he "could not think what to do; nor could he think what had happened; or why he had been left behind' or why, if he had been left behind, the goblins had not caught him" (26). Bilbo gets the confidence to get up and start moving around even though it's basically pitch black. While making his way through, Bilbo "crawled along for a good way, till suddenly his hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold metal lying on the floor of the tunnel" (26). The tiny cold ring is what started his encounter with Gollum, and it was a "turning point in his career, but he did not know it" (26). Bilbo and Gollum are pretty close and similar in species, in fact, Gollum is a representation of Bilbo if he was corrupted by evil. Their first encounter, scared Bilbo a little too much that he nearly "jumped out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears" (27), which showed cowardness. But Bilbo Baggins quickly changed that and proved he has more self-confidence as his encounter with Gollum …show more content…
When the group first come across the enchanted stream, Bilbo tried taking action of leading them, while kneeling on the edge Bilbo mentioned that “there is a boat against the far bank! Now why couldn’t it have been this side!” After getting past the stream, Bilbo took action of climbing a tree to see when the long never-ending forest ends... but he had no luck. Bilbo was failing at "leading". Days later the group got themselves mixed up in a sticky situation, "the great spider, who had been busy tying him up while he dozed, came from behind him and came at him. He could only see the thing’s eyes, but he could feel its hairy legs as it struggled to wind its abominable threads round and round him" (58). Bilbo had to think fast and use his magical ring to save himself and the others. Once Bilbo freed himself, with some difficulty, he felt much more brave. After a while when Bilbo "felt that he could not lift his hand for a single stroke more, the spiders suddenly gave it up, and followed them no more, but went back disappointed to their dark colony" (61). Bilbo was seen as the hero and was loyal to his new group of friends, for helping save
First, Bilbo has changed and developed as a character in a mental way. One way he has developed mentally is that he is angry that Gandalf has left the group and he is the one left in charge. Another way Bilbo has changed mentally is that he is less scared of the dragon and the monsters they face on their way to the dragon. The final
Bilbo’s steadily growing courage grants Thorin & Company their goal of taking back the land of their forefathers and reacquiring the gold stolen by Smaug the dragon. As the group in the book: The Hobbit journey through unknown wicked lands they encounter many problems. One such of these problems is the cruel ginormous spiders. These spiders plague the merry band while they are journeying through the ominous Mirkwood. Bilbo’s courage allows him to fight these large spiders and save Thorin & Co. from certain doom.
Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. In the beginning he is a small peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order, and hates things that are disorganized. “Please be careful,” and “Please don’t trouble. I can manage” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the very begging he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, main, and he is still the
Bilbo became a hero once more when the dwarves were captured by the elvenking and sentenced to jail until they can tell him why they were venturing into his forest. Bilbo used a ring
Bilbo grows as a character quite slowly as it builds up to him being more confident and even killing things, though he showed remorse towards Gollum.
Whereas before, Bilbo was content with life as he thought the world revolved around him, but now he sees that he actually has a place in the world that goes beyond merely existing as a hobbit. He is able to find out more about himself and is able to better relate to others once he moves out of this narrow frame of mind. In the beginning of the novel, Bilbo lives a very sheltered and empty existence as a hobbit, as he values short-term security over long-term satisfaction with his identity. Starting out, Bilbo owes his identity to being a hobbit, aside from a small bit of his Took
“Hobbits really are amazing creatures… You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you at a pinch,” explained Gandalf (Tolkien 62). Bilbo likes the comfort of his home and his habits but also has a small wish in the back of his head to do something more with his life. He finds his opportunity when Gandalf and the Dwarves hire him as a Burglar in their Company. Along the Company’s journey, Bilbo makes discoveries about his strength he didn’t know he had. By the end of the story, Bilbo was put through many trials that would have changed a simple man, but his ethics emerged unscathed. Although Bilbo Baggins is only half the size of a human, the way Tolkien develops
First of all, he gains courage in the story. Before he went on this adventure, he was timid and to himself. This is because hobbits didn’t go on anything dangerous, especially adventures. This all changes as soon as Bilbo goes on this journey with Gandalf and the dwarves. We see our first example of this when he tries to steal from the three huge, nasty
Bilbo is fed up with all of the dwarf’s insults and is now ready to go on the adventure just to prove them wrong. So now Bilbo has accepted the offers of Gandalf. According to the hero’s journey, the hero would faces tests, enemies, and began to know about the rules of this special world. After Bilbo entered the goblins cave, Bilbo faced lots of crisis, he got lost in the cave, he couldn’t find his company and join them. He is all alone without the help from others, that makes this part as trials.Followed the heroic journey, the step would be approach. After Bilbo escaped from the goblins cave, all alone by himself without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, that made a great difference to Bilbo. He felt a different person, and much fiercer, he Enhanced
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach” (Tolkien 141-142). This event has led to Bilbo beginning to believe in himself, which is an important contribution to his overall development into the hero of this tale. Finally, when Bilbo is met with the task of meeting the dragon Smaug, he does not turn back. Even when he must walk alone through the dark, secluded hallway to Smaug’s lair knowing that he could meet his doom at any instant, he walked on. His internal being knows this is his final test of courage, and his will to carry on demonstrates his final development into a hero.
Bilbo Baggins is the last being in “The Hobbit” to be considered a monster. J.R.R. Tolkien made sure to depict Bilbo as an innocent, loving, and merciful being. However the reader cannot deny the fact that he possesses some characteristics of a “monster.” Dating back to the 1300s, monsters have been defined as people whom are of abnormal form and structure. It can be argued that every species, besides the humans, are monsters, including Hobbits like Bilbo. Furthermore Bilbo is unlike a typical Hobbit thanks to his Tookish lineage; therefore he is even more abnormal. Their neighbors, in part because of their wealth, have always respected the Bagginses but also because they never bother anyone (pg 3). Bilbo eventually loses all respect of
The story starts from the side of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts as a nervous & annoyed host. He is hobbit, & his folk are reserved, but kind & carefree. Hobbits love to accommodate company when the time arrives, but this night Bilbo was in a ruck. Spontaneously, 13 dwarves & Gandalf tediously trickled through the door in groups & demanded dinner. Bilbo was not expecting these unknown & unplanned visitors, especially the grand total of 14! They ate & sang all night, while little time was devoted to business, which was planned that night. Bilbo was exhausted, unpleased, & unaffiliated with the pressing event they gathered to discuss. He was only aware that Gandalf selected him to be the Burglar of the party, which just so happened to be a vast journey across Middle-Earth. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the start of a haunting tale, which Bilbo would never overlook. The first prominent issue Bilbo had to resolve the trolls. The group utilized this to test Bilbo’s strength, courage, brains, & stealth. Throughout the story, Bilbo continues to earn his spot among the dwarves, while the party is continually slammed with additional problems, however, everyday & every challenge reveals more of the nature of the dwarves & of Bilbo. With his role concluded & the Battle of Five Armies won, the yearning for home was too much to bear. Bilbo decided to travel home & achieve his part in the adventure of a lifetime. Each dwarf had grown quite fond of Bilbo, for the journey wouldn’t have been a success without their Burglar. The travel home was bittersweet & was a wonderful memoir of his quest. Gandalf accompanied him all the way to his Hobbit Hole on the Hill in Bag-End. Can we label Bilbo a hero? If so, what kind of hero is he? Is he a hero in history or in the eyes of the dwarves? Was Bilbo a savior for the descendants to come or the
Bilbo forgot about the dangers, about his old home, about his rewards, he just wanted to help, and the fearless Bilbo was brought out of him. Courage is a hard thing for a person to acquire, but can be obtained by their achievements and failures.
Following his discovery of the ring, Bilbo begins to face danger (Mathews 36). During the trip in the forest of Mirkwood, Bilbo uses Gandalf's absence to confirm his position as leader of the group through the memorable battle against the spiders (Mathews 38). Tolkien illustrates the importance of this combat through his words: "Somehow, the killing this giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt like a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath. I will give you a name', he said to it, and I shall call you Sting.'" The author thus stresses the importance of this incident (Tolkien 154). The naming of swords at that time was a sign of that heroism displayed by great warriors, and shows that Bilbo is gaining self-confidence and bravery (The 1924). The escape from the spiders brought about another challenge, the escape from the elves. Although the elves would most likely have released their prisoners after some time because of their natural righteousness, a delay would have prevented the dwarves from entering the mountain through the secret passage. Bilbo proves that he has the mental toughness of a hero by using brilliant strategy to enable his friends to escape unnoticed by the elves (Tolkien
