to society. Beowulf does not fail his people. Even if he felt like giving up because the battle seemed tough, he never did. That signifies a firm and powerful leader. Beowulf knows what he must do to satisfy his society and he never backs down. While fighting in the battles with his arch enemies he knows that he may have a chance of dying. Beowulf would rather die as a hero than to let his society down. Beowulf believes that saving his society is everything and he must do everything to accomplish his goal. Beowulf’s culture deserves a great king like him that gives them great loyalty. The poem supports heavy evidence on the relationship between Beowulf and his society giving them everything by supporting them and defending them in every way
Loyalty and bravery are themes that are often found in literature, and Beowulf is no exception. It is one of the reasons I find this poem so interesting. Beowulf is the hero of the poem who decides to sail to Denmark with hope of protecting the Danish people from a creature known as Grendel, who has attacked and devoured many of King Hrothgar’s warriors while they were asleep. Like all heroes, Beowulf exhibits true bravery, courage, and puts the people before himself, which makes him a very likely candidate for king. Even before he faces the terrifying monster, Grendel, Beowulf renounces the uses of weapons when he says “Soon I shall sink him into death-sleep, not with my sword but solely by strength. He is unschooled in skills to strike against
In Beowulf, Canterbury Tales: The Wife of Bath’s Tale, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the authors portray societal values through the development of plot. In Beowulf, Beowulf journeys to Hrothgar’s kingdom. He comes because a monster, Grendel, has been destroying parts of their village and killing their men. Beowulf also comes to repay a debt that is owed to Hrothgar for saving his father and his father’s army. When Beowulf arrives, he boasts to Hrothgar and Hrothgar says that he is allowed to try and defeat the monster.
All throughout the poem Beowulf has not once hesitated in showing that he is brave and that he does not care about risking his own life to help others. In the beginning of the
Beowulf succeeds at not failing his people, evenly when as an elderly man, he goes ahead without a second thought to fight mythical dragon. He does what he knows he should do. This is similar to Hamlet in the last demonstration of Shakespeare's play, who is at last prepared to vindicate the demise of his dad. Like Hamlet, Beowulf is dedicated for his part of his role designated for him. He stands up to his fate, his destiny, without recoiling. Doing this, he makes himself a ideal for the Geats in a vanished brave society as well for the present day peruser as well.Beowulf succeeds at not failing his people, evenly when as an elderly man, he goes ahead without a second thought to fight mythical dragon. In the epic poem “Beowulf,” section “The Battle of Grendel,” was about the defeat of a sin covered demon known as Grendel. Grendel is described to haunt the Danes of the Herot, and is eventually defeated by the prince of the Geats knows as Beowulf. The idea of Grendel as an evil demon and Beowulf as the savior and protector of the Danes, creates the theme that in order for society and the world to be kept in balance, there must be evil, as well as good. In Chinese philosophy, it was believed that there were two principles in life, also known as yin and yang. Where yin resembled negative and darkness, while yang represented positivity and brightness.
The poem highlights Beowulf’s excellence as the perfect hero. It shows his youthful heroism as a great warrior, predominantly by his feats of strength and courage, his expression of the heroic code, and his transition to a reliable king.
Some literary scholars maintain that Beowulf developed character flaws through the course of the long narrative poem, and that at the time of his death he was a victim of pride, avarice, selfishness and an inordinate craving for glory. The purpose of this essay is to show that he was a tremendous hero from beginning to end.
The author writes about the values of Christian morals through his individuality. Beowulf is depicted as a superhero. Beowulf’s fearlessness and belief can be seen throughout the entire poem. The author presents what the other characters opinion of Beowulf in (Lines 114-119), “None of the wise ones regretting his going, much As he was loved by the Geats: the omens were good, And they urged the adventure on”. Beowulf can be represented as a biblical hero. Beowulf defatted many difficult problems that others would not even plan to take on.
The epic poem portrays justice. Not only did Beowulf himself bring justice to his people but in a way so did Beowulf’s death. “The first time in life that famous prince fought with fate against him, with glory denied him” ( line 63-65 ). This shows that Beowulf risked his own, to save his own. Meaning he risked his own life to save his people. This is similar to the brave people that decide to join the military and fight for their countries. Even more similar to the ones that unfortunately do not make it home to their families.
Beowulf is an epic poem that, above all, gives the reader an idea of a time long past; a time when the most important values were courage and integrity. The only factors that could bestow shower fame upon a person were heroic deeds and family lineage. Beowulf, as the paradigm of pagan heroes, exhibited his desire to amass fame and fortune; the only way to do so was to avenge the death of others. This theme of retribution that is ever present throughout the poem seems to color the identities of its characters.
He became very emotional and disappointed in himself. He knew it was his job to protect the kingdom but lost many lives instead. Because of a tragic event like this, most would give up and be saddened, but Beowulf does the opposite and does not let his weaknesses nor struggles take over his true self. This triggers strength of bravery and determination. Although he failed once, Beowulf was ready to continue and attempt to defeat Grendal. "
This shows how both the greatest warriors and one of the greatest kings in world love and respect each other enough to make Beowulf trust Hrothgar with his closest friends and comrades in arms. After Beowulf defeated Grendel’s mother, Beowulf is preparing to return to his homeland when he promises Hrothgar to “Land with a thousand thanes at my back / To help your cause” (1829-1830) if anyone on Hrothgar’s “borders are threatening battle” (1827). This further shows Beowulf’s affection for Hrothgar that came from the king’s love for the hero and the hero’s reciprocating love for the king. At the end of the poem, after fifty years of peaceful rule under Beowulf, who was an excellent king, Beowulf dies after killing a dragon that was attacking his homeland, his sorrowful subjects learn of his death and are “sad at heart” (2894) about Beowulf, “the people’s pride and love”
The poem and society revolves around a warrior king and his followers of the Geats. Beowulf is brave, true, honest, loyal, and self absorbed a little bit, as he thinks of himself as a God that can do anything. Which is a benefit considering that he looks at himself
The poem Beowulf presents the transformation of Beowulf from a brave warrior to an honorable King. The evolution of Beowulf shows how he fulfills his obligations to the warrior’s heroic code and then transcends into a King who loyally protects his Kingdom. Beowulf’s transformation is shown through a progression of three increasingly more difficult conflicts he must overcome- first with Grendel, then Grendel’s mother and finally against the mighty dragon. These three events are seen "as the three agons in the hero 's life"(Chickering 64). Through these adverse events Beowulf will change from brave young warrior to noble King. This paper will examine the manifestation of heroism in the poem
“No better king had ever lived, no prince so mild, no man so open to his people, so deserving of praise.” This is an ultimate description of the heroic events of Beowulf, an old Anglo-Saxon poem about a warrior who battles and destroys three horrifying monsters. Although written long ago, the emotions expressed within this work, emotions of bravery, valor, and ethics still speak to us centuries later. The anonymous author of the poem convinces us through the masterful use of various literary elements that emphasize its meaning and message. Conflict, imagery and setting are three literary elements that contribute to the effectiveness of the poem.
