The poem and movie had many key differences but also had a plethora of subtle changes that people probably didn't notice. One major difference I noticed was that the queen played a bit more of an important role in the movie, If I can recall correctly she spoke maybe a few words and that was it. The King Hrothgar also might have been relatively the same age in the movie than he was in the poem, the characters changed a lot in the movie than they were in the poem such as beowulf being interested in the queen and him submission to grendel's mother, grendel's mother was not a monster that beowulf ended up fighting which was a major surprise to those who were familiar with the poem. The majority of grendel's encounters were during the night which wasn't a difference however they were not quite or while the men were asleep they were during the party. Grendel was very weirdly portrayed in the movie he was larger and almost mossy with ears that were almost drumlike and he would scream randomly which I assume was because of the men singing about god however it was strange and didn't really fit.Grendel felt more like a screaming tree more than a demon, in the poem he was described perfectly a black furred large beast with …show more content…
To me that seems more like a demon that a mossy tree man. Beowulf seemed to be the same, described as a large man portrayed as a large muscular man however again we're brought back to grendel during the battle sequence, they were all partying during the sequence where Unferth questions Beowulf's ability and true intentions and Beowulf shuts him down by speaking about the sea monsters. And then they all leave and Beowulf and his men stay behind during this entire sequence beowulf is completely naked which has no real reason it's completely unnecessary. However they right this off as him using his real weapons

On September 19th 2017, a paper due on what it means to be a hero, defined by heroistics qualities from characters from the books Beowulf, the Knight’s Tale, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Anglo-Saxons refers to settlers from the German regions that migrated to Britain during the fall of the Roman Empire. In the story Beowulf, his actions portray him, indeed be an epic hero. Both Christianity and Paganism are both portrayed throughout the epic Beowulf. Beowulf frequently speaks of God throughout the story, while there are also many Pagan elements that are evident throughout the story as well. In addition, "It 's hard to ignore the Christian and Pagan elements in Beowulf. These types of elements are what define the heroic warrior in the epic Beowulf"(Vengeance the Pagan and Christian Inspiration). Throughout the epic Beowulf, while the Anglo-Saxons followed Christianity, they had a hard time letting go of the Pagan beliefs when things got hard.
Grendel’s Changes Grendel was one of the scariest and most dreadful demon the town had ever laid eyes on. He was different in a way, he could not speak clearly and he had very sensitive ears, especially when it came to the happiness that came from the mead hall. He wanted revenge, and that is exactly what he got. The films Beowulf and Beowulf and Grendel are the films our class had watched to see the differences in Grendel. Also in the cantos there were changes in Grendel’s physical and mental characteristics.
Grendel, the offspring of Cain the outcast, is a demon. He is a scaly creature that lives in a swampy area. He is a reptilian human, with spikes on him. He is a human-like figure, in which the way he stands. He stands on two feet, and has arms. In the book Beowulf removes Grendel’s arm and shoulder, defeating him. This must mean he has a shoulder blade and can walk like a human. He also has razor-sharp talons as it says in the book “Venturing closer, his talon was raised to attack Beowulf where he lay on the bed” (Heaney 51). One night when he is prowling around, he hears the King and his kinsmen singing out to the Lord. He hears the songs of how great God is, and is outraged. As the outcast of God, Grendel despised of God. The songs and happiness, pushes him over the edge. He plans the downfall of the hall, in spite of their songs. He will attack at night, as everyone sleeps, and butcher them dead. He sneaks in at night, watching over the guards, ready to pounce. He rips apart the men eating them alive. “Suddenly then the God-cursed brute was creating havoc: greedy and grim, he grabbed thirty men from their resting place and rushed them to his lair” (Heaney 11). This shows just how When the king awoke the next morning he grieved for his men, but little did he know Grendel would attack every night for 12 winters. Once again Grendel sets of for a night of ravishing, but the king has a plan. He has set out more guards to keep watch over the kingdom, as he sleeps. When Grendel
Both of the pieces of literature, Grendel and Beowulf, contain the same story; it is just told from different viewpoints. Beowulf is an epic oratorical poem depicting the heroic Beowulf defeating the hideous creature that haunts the halls of Herot. Grendel, however, allows the reader to be able to experience the story from Grendel’s point of view. Though the books depict the same creature who possesses the same qualities, within Grendel, he is given more human characteristics and this makes the reader feel as though they are reading about a different being.
The first example of the similarities and differences between the poem and the movie is the representation of religion. For example, both the movie and the poem of Beowulf included Christianity and Paganism. However, in the movie it was more about the Pagan religion, trying to make Christianity look bad. As an example, in one scenes of the movie, Beowulf says the Christianity killed the time of all heros. On the other hand, in the Beowulf poem, Beowulf is compared to the gods of Christianity. For example, in the passage The Battle With Grendel the scop describes “... Now he discovered- once the afflictor of
Both the epic poem Beowulf and the novel Grendel depict the same storyline, but from different point of views. Grendel’s personality tends to be much more evil than he himself depicts in the novel. Since Grendel is the narrator of the novel, the audience only gets to know what the story is like from his point of view, which he stretches the truth on numerous occasions. But, in Beowulf, the poem has a narrator and is in the third person omniscient, this means the audience knows how all the characters and feeling, thinking, or saying. Also, the theme nature vs. nurture appears a lot in Grendel which means his viewpoints on certain things are either
In addition, Beowulf originates from Geatland and is the nephew of Higlac, king of the Geats. Beowulf had the courage and strength no other man hand. He heard of Grendel’s ghastly tales and makes a journey to Denmark. When he arrived, Beowulf explained to Hrothgar that, he alone and his men, would wait for Grendel to return and purge herot of all evil. That night Beowulf’s men slept while he sat awake eager for Grendel’s return.
Since the beginning of time, on every corner of the earth, there have been heroes who possess traits that make them important gifts to the world. The specific qualities that heroes possess influence their own lives and those of the people around them, specifically like the heroes in the epic “Beowulf” and the novel The Once and Future King. Each trait that Arthur and Beowulf possessed impacted major events in their lives, such as defeating Grendel in “Beowulf” or removing Excalibur from the stone in The Once and Future King. In both literary pieces, Arthur and Beowulf embark on quests in order to save their people. For both heroes, the effects of their actions differed, as well as many key happenings throughout their journeys. Both
The details in the book versus the movie vary in several different ways. The storyline of the movie is almost completely different than the book. Beowulf, as depicted in the movie, is much less strong than the Beowulf that is described in the book. The film shows an immortal “She Wolf.” The monster in the book is descended from evil; however, the monsters shown in the film are descended from the Kings themselves.
Grendel is a very inteligent and complex creature with a very vast vocabulary. He is very poetic in how describes the world around him and is curious about the things that are happening within it. But in Beowulf’s side of the story Grendel was this giant intimidating insane Monstrosity. Grendel described Beowulf as him having very dull eyes which made him think he was insane. He was beardless which was mentioned several times in the book, and since in those times a beard was a representative of manhood so if I were Grendel I would think “well this is merely a kid.” but
This question has been asked countless times throughout history by a multitude of people. It has caused a myriad of fights, battles, and even wars. An exemplary example is Beowulf versus Grendel, Beowulf fights Grendel in order to gain glory because that’s what he believes “is worth fighting for” so to speak. As for me, I wouldn't fight for glory or fame like Beowulf and if it could be avoided I wouldn't fight at all. However, if I had to fight it would require either my family or friends to be involved with the situation like if they were in trouble and needed my help. I consider family and friends worth fighting for because regardless of anything that happens they will always have my back and I will always have theirs. It requires an extreme
The film Beowulf had its similarities and differences to the Poem. To begin with, Grendel’s appearance was unexpected in the film. The epic made him out to be a massive monster that could grab multiple men in one hand, but in the film he was much smaller than expected. Grendel looked more of a human than a monster, being able to talk and function just as a human. The poem describes Beowulf ripping of Grendel's arm with his bare hands, although his arm was pulled off with a door and chain in the film.
Given these similarities, there is one big difference. In the movie, one theme that I picked up on was the theme of history repeating itself. This was portrayed in the movie when Beowulf was seduced by Grendel’s mom. Beowulf had followed in the footsteps of Hrothgar who had also committed the same sinful act. At the end of the movie Higlac, the new king, seems Grendel’s mom out in the open ocean and lures him in, this further alludes to the theme history repeating itself.
Heroes bring a hope to people whom they protect. Heroes bring people joy and bring a sense of relaxation to the people of their society because they play such an important role in lives everywhere. Heroes are complex rather than unembellished because they can fight dragons to defend their kingdom, or create a non-profit foundation to enhance the quality of life for more than 2,000 underprivileged kids. Heroes in our present day can be very complex because a person’s viewpoint on a hero’s life can be a completely different than the way another person looks at that same hero. Thomas Davis Sr. can be extremely comparable to Beowulf but they also have major differences.
