“Courage is the commitment to begin without any guarantee of success.”(Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe)In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee states that bravery and courage are favorable traits that build character and make one stronger. She suggests this through Atticus deciding to defend Tom Robinson and Mrs. Dubose defeating her morphine addiction. There are many examples of this, but these two stood out the most. Atticus portrayed bravery and courage by defending a black man against a white jury, even though the odds were stacked against him. “simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try” (Lee 101.) When Atticus said this, he showed his character and let the reader know what he
“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Atticus Finch. This quote is proved to be true in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee as it demonstrates the true definition of courage. The book takes you along the journey of young girl, Scout Finch, during a time where colored people are thought less of. She experiences this first hand as her father, Atticus Finch, has been assigned to defend a colored man who has been accused of raping a white female. Scout along with her elder brother Jem, learn the definition of courage through some of the characters and how they act to the events that occur before and after the trial. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters are great examples of trusting yourself when all odds are stacked against you. Throughout the novel the characters that display courage are Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley.
Finally, Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird is another character that displays courage throughout the book. The first way that Atticus shows courage is by shooting Tim Johnson, the mad dog. Tim Johnson had rabies and was coming towards their neighborhood. Atticus, who hadn’t shot a gun in years, had been known for his shooting skills and was told that he had to shoot the dog, if he had missed he could have harmed someone, startled the dog, or put them in danger which is why this incident was so courageous of him. Secondly, Atticus took on Tom Robinson’s case which took lots of courage because he knew how the town of Maycomb would react and the tormenting him and his family would go through. Not only this but Atticus was determined to
Courage is not facing a problem without any fear. Courage is facing an obstacle despite their fear. Standing up for what they believe in, even though there will be negative consequences. That is true courage. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee does a great job of showing this.
Atticus tackles a situation that many would avoid. Defending an African American man during the time of segregation. Although he is very much aware of this fact, Atticus still takes on the challenge. “Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand some things yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man.” (86). Atticus states this fact to scout so that he may understand that Atticus is practically defending Tom against the whole town. Although he’s outnumbered by townspeople, Atticus courageously still decides to defend Tom Robertson; even in the face of uncertain failure.
Atticus represents courage throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. A time when Atticus shows this is when Atticus shoots Tim Robinson the mad dog. On page 127 in To Kill a Mockingbird it says “The rifle cracked. Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk in a brown-and-white heap. He didn’t know what hit him.” Another example of when
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus describes courage as being "licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do" (112). This is a very important theme in the book because it highlights fighting losing battles and staying determined through difficult times. There are many references to fighting a losing battle such as Atticus' defense of Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell's fight to rise above her father and her social status, Mrs. Dubose's struggle with addiction, and Dolphus Raymond's battle against racism. Tom Robinson was a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman.
Jim Crow racism was the belief that whites are superior to non-whites. This idea generated rules of Jim Crow racism that mainly caused segregation between whites and non-whites. The segregation of restaurants, schools, and churches were because of the idea of Jim Crow racism. It was the social norm to wear black face and yell racial slurs at non-whites. Black face was worn by a white man with the man usually mocking people of color about their race and behavior, by yelling racial slurs. Black face was usually seen on television or theater. The oppression of non-whites was horrid because they faced various consequences when they broke a Jim Crow law, such as lynching or hanging. The use of Jim Crow racism has reduced over the past eighty
Bryce Adams Mrs. Daines English 8 03/07/24 Courage shows us that if we put our mind to something, we can achieve it. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee wants us to understand that real courage is standing up for the right thing, even though you know that you're going to lose. The author of the book is trying to show us that courage is standing up for what you believe and not what other people think. Atticus defends Tom Robinson even though he knows he is going to lose the case, while Tom Robinson shows courage by standing up for himself in court. Atticus is told about Tom Robinson’s case and is willing to accept the case because if he doesn't, then he destroys someone’s innocence.
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” (Mark Twain) In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are not many characters that show moral courage. One particular character that shows moral courage is Atticus Finch. This character always does what he believes is right. Atticus shows courage not by being aggressive or killing, but by standing up for what he believed in a sophisticated and determined way. Atticus whose moral courage is
Atticus is courageous for defending a black man accused of rape,Tom Robinson, against a white women ,Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell’s daughter, in a predjest community and be ridiculed by people in his community, friends and family included. Atticus has the courage to stand up for what he believes in and takes ridicule from people in his community to defend Tom Robinson even when he knows he will lose the case. Atticus says to uncle Jack ”’It couldn’t be worst, Jack. The only we’ve got is a black mans words against the Ewells’. The evidence boils down the you did it-I didnt. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson's word against the Ewells…’’’. This shows Atticus is courageous because he knows people are angry and saying he is wrong and he still stands up for what he believes in and defends Tom Robinson when he knows he's losing the case in the end. Atticus is courageous for standing up for what he believes is
The following quote said by Atticus, shows who he really is and what he wants to do. Jem looks up to his father like children look up to police officers. I like the way Atticus teaches his son what real courage is. Like the common saying "actions speak louder than words", Atticus shows his character usually through his action rather than speech. By telling this to gem, he gets rid of the idea in Jem's head that having a gun in your hand isn't courage.
Courage is being able to do what people believe is right without caring what others think. This is shown through the character Atticus in the novel To Kill Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. To begin with, Atticus stands up for what he thinks is right when he sits in front of the jail protecting Tom Robinson from all the men that try to hurt him. During the confrontation at the jailhouse, Atticus and Mr. Cunningham say this to each other, “‘Get aside from the door Mr. Finch’ ‘You can turn around and go home again Walter’” (Lee 151). The men are trying to get through the door to Tom. Atticus knew the men were coming to get Tom, and he knew he had to stop them. When Atticus’s courage was questioned by Mr. Cunningham, he did not back down. Atticus showed his courage through
“Instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” is the true meaning of courage stated by Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird(Lee 149,chap 11). To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by author Harper Lee. The novel is about a childhood adventure that takes place in the southern town of Maycomb, were siblings Jem and Scout learn what it means to grow up and mature into adulthood. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays that courage is not just a man with a gun in his hand, courage can be portrayed or shown in different types of forms. The types of courage that were shown in To Kill a Mockingbird is physical courage, moral courage, and emotional courage.
Courage is the strength in the face of pain. For instance, when Jem mutilates all of Mrs. Dubose’s flowers after her offensive remark about Atticus’ defense of Tom, Atticus says unhappily, “I have no doubt that you’ve been annoyed by your contemporaries…, but to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable,” (103-104). As Jem does his daily reading time with Mrs. Dubose as retribution, he starts to understand why Mrs. Dubose was so cranky. Atticus wants Jem to understand what she is actually like and how brave she is for trying to fight her addiction. With this, I learned that courage is not the absence of fear but rather the will to persevere despite it.
"I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun." What kinds of heroism and courage are shown in To Kill a Mockingbird? Discuss.
