When Allied Forces defeated Japanese forces during the World War II, Japan was immediately called for sanctions due to their barbaric actions during the war. Having its military forces suspended and eventually stripped off, the Japanese was no longer able to continue its military forces. In 1947, the Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution was formed under the guidance of the American forces. It stated that Japan is prohibited from maintaining its military force and only can use force for self defense purposes. Ever since then, Japan is under strict monitoring with the use of its military power. After the constitution was passed, Japan focused on the economic side of itself. After World War II, cities in Japan were destroyed …show more content…
Starting with the 1954 Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement, both have been supportive of each other. In 1996, Japan’s military power became prominent again when Japan agreed to give non-military support to American forces near Japan. Since 2004, 50,000 troops are stationed in Japan with over 70 military bases nationwide. The U.S. has helped Japan rebuild its military capabilities slowly but ever since the territorial disputes in Asia began, the U.S. has been pressuring Japan to take more military actions. The U.S. believes that remilitarizing Japan can ignite regional stability. Japan is also collaborating with the U.S. Air Force to develop a Theatre Missile Defense System that sees the expansion of long-range missiles. Japan and the U.S. seemed to have a mutual agreement on putting a stop to the Soviet Union, North Korea and even …show more content…
China is the main driving force for Japan’s stepping up of its military power because of China’s desire for maritime territories. During former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s time, the existence of Article 9 has been a subject of question and debate if Koizumi had violated the constitution. In 1998, North Korea launched a missile over the Japanese territory that was believed to be a missile for espionage use. In late 2001, Japan attacked and sank North Korean spy boats in Chinese seas. Also, Japanese troops were sent in American-led coalitions in Iraq and Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks and this was the first real use of Japanese troops since the Second World War. Japan had argued that the SDF participated solely in peacekeeping missions. Japan’s rising military power and its use of armed forces have raised eyebrows all over the world. It is clear that the U.S. wanted Japan to be the military power in Asia and Japan’s strive for nationalism and end of pacifism is obvious. It is also seen as a form of
As early as 1932, the United States began warning Japan about its aggression toward China (Doc. A). The U.S. claimed they would not recognize new territories because it violated the Kellogg Briand Pact that made war illegal. They also chose to not recognize new treaties as the open door policy with China was violated. FDR would later deliver his famous “Quarantine Speech” regarding the Japanese invasion of China in which he encouraged the peace-loving nations to take action against military expansionism (Doc. 1).
Have you ever felt threatened by the one you once called a friend? American’s know this feeling all too well. In 1919, the major world powers met to deal with the wreckage that had occurred in World War 1, among those present were Japan and the United States. Japan was unhappy about how Great Britain and The United States punished Germany, the Japanese saw it as they were trying to stick to the status quo and to not cause a commotion within the League of Nations.
This made Japan uneasy as the U.S. could become a threat in later years. Japan expressed it’s worries appointed towards the United States by stating “‘When I think about the strengthening of American defenses in the Southwest Pacific...I see no end to
The first couple decades of the twentieth century Japan and the United States had increasing tension and conducted negotiations to reduce threats of conflict. Asia was the center point for both countries, and each wanted a piece of it. Competition for economic and commercial opportunities were ongoing growing with tension. Starting
The history of Article 9 shows that Japan was forced to accept Article 9, and has stretched its interpretative limits over the past 70 years. Imperial Japan committed various horrendous acts that violated human rights during World War II. It was inevitable for the Japanese to lose respect from the Allied nations, and as a result lost their trust. (cite?) The West was uncomfortable with the idea that Japan would have a military force post-World War II.
The United States (US) is constantly looking for ways to improve relations with other countries and to follow their National Security Strategy (NSS). To aid the US in analyzing different countries, the PMESII-PT is used as a formula to keep everyone on the same page. The PMESII-PT contains eight different variables which help the United States analyze how different countries can affect their National Security Strategy. These variables include: political, military, economic, social, information, infrastructure, physical terrain, and time. These variables can be used to help better understand the situation and most important aspects of any country. Japan is a major country that can have a large impact on US relations and build on the current NSS. Throughout this paper, the PMESII-PT variables are examined to help educate and show how Japan can affect the United States’ NSS. After reading this paper, one can gain knowledge on how Japan can have a large influence on US interests in the Pacific/ Asian Command (PACOM) region.
Despite much domestic and international hysteria that Japan could now be drawn into foreign conflicts, and potentially even launch a war, closer scrutiny reveals it still has a long way to go to cast off its pacific post-War legacy. “The United States supports recent changes in Japanese defense policy, including the adoption of collective self-defense and new bilateral guidelines for U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation,” (Crook,
- America’s military played a huge role in the changes of Japan’s enemy to ally relationship. Throughout history, America’s influence also created changes in Japan’s view on politics. Women could now vote. The constitution also contained a clause renouncing the 'threat or use of force as a means of settling international disputes'. Japan adopted a democratic government for the first time in 1947. In 1951 America and Japan signed a peace treaty in San Francisco and the American occupation ended in 1952. However, the Treaty of Mutual Co-operation and Security gave the USA the right to keep bases in Japan. Furthermore, the island of Okinawa was occupied until 1972. (A Brief, n.d.) In 1955 the Liberal Democratic Party took power and it ruled Japan for most of the period from 1955 to 2009. (A Brief, n.d.) The nation is now governed by the two houses of parliament, known as the Diet, with a prime minister elected by the majority party. This is the second largest identifier of America occupying Japan.

World War II brought great tension between two of the strongest countries during the 1940s: the United States and Japan. Conflict started with Japan’s push past Chinese borders into Manchuria in search of the natural resources that Japan needed. The United States avoided military action with Japan and instead decided to stop economic trade. One of these measures was the Neutrality Act, which prohibited the sale of weapons to nations at war (Nash 513). The United States tried several maneuvers on Japan; they placed oil embargos to force Japan to shut down military operations in China. The US was focused on economically destroying Japan while Japan was planning a surprise attack on the US. Japan. Completely unaware of what the Japanese were
Although the United States did well in eliminating any future threats from Japan, it was realized later on that Japan was left in the midst of a violent wave of communism with no means of defense but for the United States which did not wish for a direct war on the Soviets, who backed all communist countries.
World War II changed Japan: the country was once a massive military power, with its influence dominating politics in Southeast Asia and Oceania, but after the war had its military taken dissolved, its conquered territories stripped, and a foreign general displace their king. This general, MacArthur, sought to turn Japan into a democracy, and went about dismantling the former political and

The loud and annoying sounds of an alarm clock go off alerting a student that its 4:37AM. In one fatal swing of the arm the alarm clock goes crashing to the floor in hopes that the sound will stop. After a few minutes of collecting oneself the student gets up and prepares him or herself to go to 6AM practice. After hours of drills, being yelled at, and sweating it is time to sit through numerous classes. Once class is finished it is time to go back to practice, team meeting, lifting, or film session. Don’t forget the homework that is due for class tomorrow. At the day’s end once practice, class, team dinners, and homework are finished it is finally time to go to sleep. This being an almost daily breakdown of a student-athlete has raised much concern for if student-athletes should be paid or not.
