World War II caused greater destruction than any other war in history. The war took the lives about 17 million soldiers and an even greater number civilians, who died as a result of bombings, starvations, and deliberate campaigns of mass murder. More than 50 nations took part in this war, which changed the world forever. In Asia and the Pacific, the Japanese armies invaded countries and islands. On December 7,1941, the Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Within hours the U.S. Congress declared war against Japan, plunging the U.S. headfirst into World War II.
