When the concentration camps throughout Europe were liberated, the world was shocked to find out that around twelve million people had been murdered in total. Because genocide had never been publicly recognized before, there were no formal laws against such mass murder. Instead, the Nuremberg Trials during which Hitler's remaining officials were declared guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Nuremberg trials were a milestone toward the establishment of a permanent international court, and an important precedent for dealing with later instances of genocide and other crimes against humanity. Another result of World War II was the formation of the United Nations. After the World War I, the Allies created the League of Nations, whose purpose was to keep peace and stability in Europe. One way that World War II could have been prevented was by changes to the Treaty of Versailles. Because the the treaty was extremely harsh towards Germany, it brought them high debt and high rates of unemployment. Germany’s state of depression caused by the treaty made Hitler’s transition to gain power go more smoothly, because the citizens wanted a more radical leader that promised them change. Once Hitler was in power, his quest for European domination and revenge for the treaty was inevitable. If the Treaty of Versailles was less harsh towards Germany, the war could have potentially been avoided. The failure of the League of Nations was another way that World War II could have been prevented. The main problem in the League of Nations was that it had no real military might and no standing army. This meant that they could not enforce any decisions they make.
