World War I was also known as the Great War, or the War to End All Wars. This war took place from 1914 to 1918. World War I was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28th, 1914, although a war was inevitable due to the tensions between European countries. The three main causes of World War I were nationalism, militarism, and alliances. Nationalism initiated war because citizens felt that it was their duty to defend their country’s honor.

Imperialism was one of the four contributing factors to the cause of World War One, along with secret alliances, militarism, and nationalism.  It is the most important cause of WW1, because it created a build-up of tension in Europe and outside of Europe, and through imperialism, the three other causes were able to affect the beginnings of the war. Imperialism is defined as the governing of one people by another country, which was a recurring dilemma prior to WW1 due to the industrialist movement. Although not all events that fall into the imperialistic category were about controlling another country, they contributed to the war, and imperialistic events were the foundation of the cause of WW1.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary. The assassination was planned by a Serbian terrorist group, called, “The Black Hand”. The man who shot Franz Ferdinand and his wife was a Bosnian revolutionary named Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo Princip wanted the Austro-Hungarian Empire out of Bosnia. To me, the cause of the war was mainly nationalism and alliances. There is a seemingly endless list of reasons why WWI started but their were 3 main ones that caused the war to escalate into such an international one. The first reason is Alliances this is an important one because most of the countries that became large parts of this war weren’t directly involved in the original conflict. But, were involved through alliance and backing up their “little brother.” The next reason was the Arms Race because Germany especially had began creating new, bigger, and better weapons that could kill more people faster than older guns and other weapons. After that those weapons were created countries began creating all the new weapons in bulk. This made them kinda want to “show off” their new arsenal of fancy, new, better, guns (causing them to be a bit more “antsy” for war). The next and final reason was The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Although the actual assassination of the Archduke wouldn't have been very important to the war at any other time. But, his assassination at this time caused the war to actually begin because all the countries have been at each other's necks just waiting for any reason to start a war.

As it is called world war one was the first war that had the world involved. It all started when a terrorist shot and killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, that then started the long list of wars being declared upon as basically everyone started declaring war on each other. The war was very experimental as tons of new weapons were used. The main three weapons that played a major part of the war were the protection of barbed wire, the extremely deadly machine gun and the terrible toxic gas. Theses weapons were a big part of the war as they not only caused most of the deaths but also changed the complexion of war.

Germany declared war on Russia, France on both Germany and Austria-Hungary. Finally Britain had joined France and Russia, then all of Europe was at war.

The fifth cause of World War One was the event of an assassination. Austria Hungary demanded that Serba take action against those responsible for the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. When Serbia failed to meet these demands, Austria Hungary declared war on them. This was one of the main events that kick started World War One because soon after, Germany got involved alongside them, and Serbia’s allies got involved.
