Thomas Jefferson decided to send his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead an expedition to explore the West. Lewis chose William Clark to go with him. They were to make careful studies on the geology, botany, and zoology of the region, and gather information on any natives they met. Also, they were to try to find the source of the Missouri River and seek evidence of British soldiers or forts in the area. They left St. Louis on May 14, 1804. They used a fifty-five-foot keelboat and two flat- bottomed dugouts, but when the Missouri River became shallow all the boats were abandoned. The group followed the Missouri, Snake, and Columbia rivers most of the way. At Fort Mandan a French fur trapper named Charbonneau and his wife Sacajawea joined
North of St. Louis, in Mississippi and Missouri rivers, William Clark established “ Camp River Dubois” in 1803 on December. Lewis spent time in St. Louis talking with traders about Missouri upper regions and also started to obtain maps of the area while Clark stat at the camp recruiting and training men.Clark left with the Corps of Discovery on May 14, 1804 and then was joined by Lewis in St. Charles. There was more than forty-five people in the party and they also costed of young, unmarried soldiers, a French-Indian interpreter, unmarried soldiers, and Clark’s Black slave York.
In the winter of 1805 , two men named Lewis and Clark found the survival tool ever, Sacagawea. Sacagawea would teach them how to travel the mountains and the forests, the rivers and the plains. They learned which plants were safe to eat, and which were poisonous. They knew how to hunt for rabbits, foxes, elks and deer, and even how to trap longhorn sheep. But if Lewis and Clark didn't find Sacagawea, they probably wouldn't have survived. In passage one it states,"Lewis and Clark headed deeper and deeper into uncharted land. As the trip continued, one of their men became ill and died. They also had to do their best to find food and stay healthy during the winter months." This evidence shows that before Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea , they were barely surviving.
Two men were chosen to explore the new territory; Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They started the expedition in May, 1804 to September, 1806. Jefferson had sent out the expedition to find a new route to the Pacific Ocean, and establish a colony on the west before Britain, or another country claimed it. Of course, the secondary objectives were scientific studies, and economics. Lewis and Clark were not the only men on the expedition, they were just the leaders. They had 40 other men, French, Americans, and one African-American all on the expedition with them.
Within this group, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were among the leaders. The Corps of Discovery followed the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers where they were able to make it to the Pacific Ocean. In total, the journey lasted two and a half years and resulted in only one fatality. This expedition helped lead the Americans to leave claim on the Oregon Territory and the population of the Northwest Territory
On May 14th, 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark start their three year expedition across the Louisiana Purchase. They started in Camp River Dubois, east of the Mississippi river. They sailed all the way up the Missouri river. When the Great Falls came up, they had to get out of the boat and split up. William Clark and four dozen other men went on the
Within 10 days of arriving on the coast, the Corps of Discovery decided to leave their storm-bound camp on the north shore of the Columbia River, and explore the area to the south. This area was said to have a ready supply of elk and deer and had convenient access to the ocean, which the men used to make salt. Lewis, with a small party, scouted ahead and found a “most eligible” site for winter quarters. On December 10, 1805, the men began to build a fort about two miles up the Netul River (now Lewis and Clark River). It took just over 3 weeks for the Expedition to build the fort, and by Christmas Day they were under shelter. They named the fort in honor of the friendly local Indian tribe, the Clatsop. Fort Clatsop would be the expedition’s home for the following three months.
When the names Lewis and Clark are mentioned, many people will have an automatic picture of raccoon skin hats, Sacagawea, and the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. One half of the famous duo was Captain Merriweather Lewis. Jefferson had played mentor to Lewis allowing him access to the vast library in Jefferson’s estate, Monticello. Lewis had impressed Jefferson with his willingness to educate himself. (LEWIS) On Feb 23, 1801 Jefferson offered Lewis the role as the President’s personal secretary.
The members of the expedition were always on the lookout for Indians and hoping they would come in peace. They were armed in case they weren't. For security, Lewis and Clark made camp on river isla nds whenever possible and kept guards there at night. By the end of July they had traveled more than 600 miles up the river and still hadn't met an Indian.
They stayed at the fort until April 1805. So far, Lew and Clark had discovered 108 new plant species and 68 mineral types. Sacagawea became increasingly important to the expedition as she showed the men things to eat like licorices, white apples, wild artichokes, and many other edible plants and roots. She also saved many important tools and artifacts when the boat tipped in a storm. On June 13, 1805, Lewis reached the great Missouri falls and the crew was forced to carry all their gear, supplies, and canoes up a seventeen-mile trail to the top of the falls. This took them almost an entire month. On August 8, 1805, Sacagawea recognized Beaverhead rock from her childhood and knew they were close to Shoshone lands. On August 17, 1805, the expedition arrives at the Shoshone camp, where Sacagawea recognized the chief as her long-lost brother Cameahwait, and they were given horses to continue their journey. On August 31, 1805, the expedition set out for the Bitterroot Mountains with many horses they had received from the Shoshone. On September 11, 1805, the Corps started the steep climb into the Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains they will travel more than 160 miles. On October 16, 1805, they reached the Colombia River where the rapids were so dangerous that nearby Indian tribes stood by to watch the white men drown. In November when they found the Pacific, the
In 1803, Meriwether Lewis recruited me to the Corps. of Discovery. We were to explore the Louisiana Territory. We also had to trade with Native Americans, find a waterway from the United States to the Pacific Ocean, and claim the Oregon Territory throughout this journey. This journey began on May 14th, 1804 in Missouri. We travelled on the Missouri River towards the West. During this expedition, Sergeant Floyd passed away on August 20, 1804. He was the only person to die during this trip. Soon after, we reached the Great Plains.
Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark put their lives on the line only to return with information regarding the Pacific Northwest of the United States territory. Their reasons behind this journey, being to expand the United States to the West, involved the entire nation but debatably, their accomplishments and the reaction of others became a major part of today’s history.
Meriwether Lewis joined the army at age 20. William Clark also joined the army at age 21 and then left at age 25. Lewis and Clark got offered a job, no man could resist their job was to explore the new land that the United States just bought. Also, he wanted them to write a detailed notes and pictures so he could learn about the new things in the West. Lewis and Clark left to go on their journey May 4,1804. During the expedition Sacagawea was an important native that Lewis and Clark met. Sacagawea told other native tribes that Lewis and Clark and friendly and that they now owned the land, but most natives were okay with them. April 7, 1805, Lewis and Clark left a group of friendly natives called the Mandan tribe and the Hidats tribe to go to the Great Falls. On July 25, 1805, they reached Three Forks. Overall Lewis and Clark found over 170 new plants and 120 new animals. Lewis and Clark journey lasted for 2 years and over 8,000 miles. Lewis and Clark left to get back home March 23,
In May of 1804, two men set out on an important journey that would take them across the country and discover new land, but none of it would have been possible without the aid of one woman. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was planned by Thomas Jefferson, in order to explore the unknown in the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, and also to find a water route across the continent. Along the way the group of men met a quiet native, named Sacagawea, whose impact would later have a large effect on the success of their important journey.
Louis. From there they sailed up to the Wood River where they established Camp Dubois for the winter. Lewis and Clark completed their preparation during the winter by buying supplies, over hauling their boats, drilling their men, and completing their roster. A total of twenty-five soldiers and twenty civilian boatmen, guides, and hunters were selected for the expedition. Lewis estimated this journey would last at least two years. Finally on May 14, 1804 the expedition began.
Macbeth’s presentation of his state of the union address isn’t really like the way modern day politics would present it but he uses similar tactics. Macbeth tries to persuade his people by saying there is a disease is his country and he will fight to root it out. In the play it turns out that the only problem people have is actually Macbeth himself. A lot of modern day politics try to use the same tactics. They spend a lot of money on trying to spread their ideas on fixing the countries problems. They also spend a lot of money trying to beat down the people they are running against accusing them of lying or cheating at some point in their life or career. Modern day politics are a lot like Macbeths tactics but they have some differences. Macbeth
