“Opening Skinners Box” a book by Lauren Slater written about the ground breaking experiments in the psychological world. Posing ways to not only get the answers to all of the big questions but to understand why we chose to accept those answers. In the early years phycology was an unknown, scary and intimidating area that many people wanted answers to. In all of the compelling research and ground breaking experiments, for each answer that came up, two more questions came with it. The mind is a tricky thing to grasp, but thanks to a few well known scientists we are a little closer to understanding it.
Speaker Credibility: Personally, I’ve pulled an all-nighter before to ensure I studied everything for my exam, and I am interested in learning more about the effects of sleep deprivation.
This quarter we did read about sleep. I learned how much does the average adult needs per night to function properly. An interesting fact I have learned is “when sleepy frontal lobes confront an unexpected situation, slow responses spell disaster” (Myers & Dewall, pg.57, 2014). Which was one of the things they spoke of in the video no sleep can make you literally stupid. Additionally, learning about sleep debt which must be repaid and maybe for some won’t affect them for a couple of weeks. I learned while staying awake all night to do homework might it get the work done, it doesn’t mean I would remember the work I did.
Technology is changing the way we think, the effects of technology is complicated. “Thompson’s point is that ‘artificial intelligence’ — defined as machines that can cerebrate on their own just like or better than humans — is not yet (and may never be) as puissant as ‘intelligence amplification,’ the symbiotic smarts that occur when human cognition is augmented by a close interaction with computers.” (Walter, 2013) Technology impacts our brain, it impacts our ability to learn and think it pushes us towards new forms of technology and pulling us away from the old ways of technology. Technology gives us a better way to feel connected with what our brains are trying to understand, Thompson mentions that the key word ‘mindfulness’ is important, and how you should focus on how you could let the information sunk in. As technology still develops it opens up more ways on how it could be useful to people keeping them, and their brains connected to the idea of technology and the importance of it, but relying so heavily on the new technology has created a generation that revolves around
