Atomic Bomb DBQ When it happened, it was August 6, 1945. At Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs. The people that were involved were Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and Truman. The reason it happened was that Truman was getting revenge because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Then, the United States wanted to force a quick surrender from Japan so they wouldn't lose as many soldiers. President Harry S. Truman made the right decision to drop the atomic bombs because they saved many U.S. lives. President Harry S. Truman made the right decision to drop the atomic bombs because they saved many U.S. lives. President Truman did the right thing when he dropped the Atomic Bomb. It was the only logical option in the pacific. The dropping of the bomb saved lives on both sides. We really had to show the Japanese that we would do whatever was required to win the war. They would not give up, no matter what, because the Japanese generals were ruthless human beings.
The sources used are a variety of books and academic articles which explain differing reasons on Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb. As this essay explains alternative factors which influenced Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb, it draws especially on the words of Truman and the words of his Secretary of State, James F. Byrnes. The historian Gar Alperovitz challenges the traditionalist perspective, that the bomb was dropped to end the war without the casualties of a ground invasion, claiming that Truman had political intentions when deciding on using the bomb against Japan. Historians,
Harry S. Truman was the first and only American president to order the use of the atomic bomb. The result was Japanese surrender on September 2nd, 1945, marking the end to the Second World War. The question is ‘Why did Truman decide to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945?’ There were many factors which played a part in his decision. Harry Truman ordered the first ever use of nuclear warfare, the atomic bomb, to be dropped on Japan in August 1945, and most American scholars and citizens believed the official version of the story, that the President had acted to avert an invasion of Japan that could have cost half a million American lives.
In August 1945 President Truman decided to drop two atomic bombs on japan. Just the bomb in Hiroshima killed 146,000 people. Killed all 226,000 people in all. Dropping the bomb was a huge deal. President Truman did not have to drop the bomb to end’ the war. An atomic bomb is a very powerful bomb. This bomb destroyed a whole city and killed lots of people.
President Truman did the right thing about dropping the Atomic Bomb. Truman wanted to end the war because the American soldiers were losing their lives. Before Truman dropped the Atomic bomb, he warns Japan he was going to drop it if they don’t surrender. Japan still doesn’t surrender, after warning Japan, he drops the Atomic bomb and nearly kills about 84,000 people, 14,000 people injured and over 250,000 building destroyed. The Atomic bomb made a “Mushroom clouds” the ashes from the atomic bomb was so high you couldn’t even see the light. When the bomb dropped it was very hot and people kept breathing hot air. Many people were left with burn marks and with mental issues because of what they saw.
As the war came to an end Truman had two main choices on how to finish the war, either drop the atomic bombs on military and civilian target, invade the Japanese mainland or drop the bomb on an uninhabited island as a warning. There were two different less consired options the first being the idea to demonstrate the power of the nuclear bomb by dropping it on an uninhabited island however this option was quickly shut down as advisors stated, “We can propose no technical demonstration likely to end the war; we see no acceptable alternative to direct military use.” The second less considered option was to warn Japan before dropping the bomb on a Japanese city however like like a demonstration this was shut down quickly, “There was no assurance that the bomb would work’... They too feared that a warning, followed by a “dud” might stiffen Japan’s moral. There was no reason policy makers concluded, to take this risk.”
The United States’ use of the atomic bomb in Japan is still a controversial topic to this day. President Truman had to consider many factors that would influence his ultimate decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There were many justifications as to why the use of the atomic bomb was the best option at the time. One of the main reasons was that dropping the bombs would end the war much quicker and hundreds of thousands of U.S. casualties would be spared. Another thing that Truman considered was Japan’s refusal to surrender.

“Truman stated that his decision to drop the bomb was purely military. Truman believed that the bombs saved Japanese lives as well. Prolonging the war was not an option for the President,” (ushistory.org 1). President Truman and the United States government made a fair decision by dropping the atomic bomb on the Japanese citizens in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during 1945. The bomb allowed the United States to appear more powerful and led to them influencing the rest of the world. The dropping of the atomic bomb was also a just response to the previous atrocities committed by Japan to other countries including the United States. In the long run, the bomb saved more lives that would have been lost in the war, since the bombs caused the
If they didn’t use the atomic bomb, the soldiers against the Japanese would most likely die. The atomic bomb saved thousands of American lives. The Japanese were known for never surrendering, so it was important to end the war with as little American casualties as possible. President Truman and his advisors realized the only way to truly defeat Japan and show off the atomic bomb would end the war. If they warned Japan, it could put the bombing crews into danger because Japan could shoot them down (Harry S Truman’s Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb).
President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the direct cause for the end of World War II in the Pacific. The United States felt it was necessary to drop the atomic bombs on these two cities or it would suffer more casualties. Not only could the lives of many soldiers have been taken, but possibly the lives of many innocent Americans. The United States will always try to avoid the loss of American civilians at all costs, even if that means taking lives of another countries innocent civilians.
At the time of the Three Mile incident, there were only three major television stations limiting the ability to communicate critical information to as many people as possible. Development of cable television and more channels for people to watch gives the ability to distribute information at an increased rate. This is a great advantage to communicating crisis information to a mass audience.
Before they knew what happened, thousands of people were dead. Towards the end of World War II, Japan would not surrender so President Truman made a big decision and decided to drop the atomic bomb. This bomb was deadly and killed people instantly. President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb was questioned by many. He made the wrong decision to drop the atomic bomb because other methods could have worked, it killed lots of innocent civilians, and the war could have ended soon without the atomic bomb being dropped.
Our President of 1938, Harry Truman, agreed to use the Atomic Bomb for the use of Warfare. I agree with this act because it saved so many lives and put the U.S. in the lead of World War II. The Japanese wanted to attack the U.S.A. at the island of Midway. The U.S. found this out by getting into their messages and cracking their code. President Truman made a huge decision and decided to drop two bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man. The U.S. decided to attack Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Okinawa became one the of the most deadly battles of World War 2. As a matter of fact, my grandpa, Silvio Giusti was a machine gunner in the battle of Okinawa. The Japanese had Kamikazes, who were suicidal plane bombers. The Kamikaze pilots practiced Bushido. Emperor Hirohito
A famous expression often used by Harry Truman was “the buck stops here”. This means that all people have the tendency to pass along responsibilities and blame. Harry Truman, however, believed that as the President of the United States, he must take responsibility for his actions. One decision he weighed was the decision to use nuclear weapons during the Pacific War in the year 1945. President Harry Truman’s decision to drop the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a suitable decision and saved far more Japanese lives in the long run, while also preserving hundreds of thousands of American lives.
