If an average person was asked to explain how the Internet worked, what would be their response? They would most likely have no idea how to explain it. However, it had to have been invented somehow, and Tim Berners-Lee is one of the inventors. He created a core part of the internet over countless hours of work. Born into a tech-loving family, he is privileged to be known as the inventor of the World Wide Web.

Tim Berners-Lee was interested in technology from the start. He was born in London in 1955. Inspired by his parents, he became hooked on computer science. He attended The Queen’s College at Oxford and received a 1st Class Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. Afterwards, he became an engineer in a telecommunications business. While working there, he created the Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol, or “HTTP”, in order to communicate information between researchers more easily. His job at CERN was a lot harder before he invented HTTP. 9 years later, he figured out how to combine HTTP and the Internet to form the World Wide Web; the first website was in turn created by him. At the time, it wasn’t very revolutionary or open to the public, but today the Internet’s impact on society is huge.

He was greatly honored for his work, receiving many awards. One such award was the Order of Merit, which is held by only 24 living people. He was also voted into becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 2004, he was knighted and became a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
