During the American Revolutionary War, conflicts arose from tensions between the colonists that came from Great Britain to the New world and Great Britain. The fighting started at Lexington and Concord in 1775. For the colonists, it was now a war for their independence. France entered the war siding with the colonists in 1778, this turned a civil war into an international conflict. With the help of French, the colonists defeated the British. The British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781. The colonists were no longer colonists because they won their independence from Britain. However, fighting would not officially end until 1783. The Revolution impacted change in American society through fostering of national identity, the growth of the government, and the unity of economies. The growth of “National Identity” was spurred soon after Declaration of Independence. This happened because patriots who were loyal to America though. Some others were not as loyal to America. New ideas and liberties followed into the states including freedom religion where one could believe what one wanted to. John Locke came up with enlightenment ideas such as the “natural rights.” Natural rights are the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that each American has their own rights to. Thomas Jefferson added to the General assembly of Virginia in 1786, that every man should have the right to pursue any religious practice that one would please. This brought on the Bill of Rights in 1791. The bill of rights is in the American Constitution; it is still there today. In it has things such as freedom of speech, press, religion, right to bear arms, no quartering soldiers, everyman has the right to a fair and speedy trial, and many
