Renaissances Occurring Today
There are many significant renaissances occurring today that are changing the world as we know it. Today we are witnessing the major renewals in human technology involving art music and also a rebirth of social movements such as feminism.
Feminism can be traced back to the late 1800’s when the women’s rights association was formed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton with the goal to achieve voting rights for women through a congressional amendment to the constitution. These periods of time are now referred to as waves because a majority of women could be seen protesting and fighting for specific rights over consecutive years. The term feminism can be described as an active movement to establish or support equality and rights for women. Feminism was first introduced during WW1, due to women entering the labor market to help support the men fighting in battle. People then discovered the value of their work and decided to resort on them to help aid the economy from plummeting after the stifling number of men lost in the war. Due to this, women’s fashion began to change drastically through them now working in industries rather than at home. They began to wear non-traditional styles such as “flappers” which displays far more of the women figure than ever before.
Throughout history of the world humans have constantly been advancing and evolving, always searching for the next great idea that will change the world. There is no greater time or place and human history where man has evolved and created more than during the European Renaissance. After the dark ages and the bubonic plague Europe was in need of a rebirth, fueled by returning crusaders and a renewed interest in the Greek-Roman culture the Renaissance was born. This time period from the fifteenth to sixteenth century led to some of the greatest discovers in history; art too was experiencing a complete redesign focusing more on the humanism and being designed for the elite.
The first wave of feminism was tied to industrialization in the 19th century. It was where changes in cultural acceptance started to grow and women were moving into the public sphere. They were fighting for social reform, higher education, etc. They focused on temperance, abolitionism and more importantly Women’s Suffrage. Women’s Suffrage centers on women getting the right to vote.
In the history of the United States, there are three recognized waves of feminism. The first wave began in the late 19th century and lasted into the beginning of the 20th century. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony are the well known women to suggest the right for women to vote on the women’s rights campaign. The most important success of this wave was suffrage, the right for women to vote. However, the women of these times basically wanted the right to engage as a full citizen in society which meant holding property, keeping money earned, having guardianship of children, and of course, the right to vote.
